Great fish market. Fish is always fresh. Service is ‘above and beyond.’ These guys helped me pack my styrofoam containers full of fish and ice to drive down to North Carolina to visit family. 24 hours with stops on the way… The fish arrives fresh and delicious. Thanks to the guys at Popular !

Ultra fresh fish make this place always worth a trip to Newark. Thursdays is the day when I go. The fish still are jet lagged from the flight from Portugal. They are always fair priced and very busy. It is worth every minute of the wait to get these European fish. Sardines fresh from the nets ready to grill.

The owner and staff are extremely rude and inconsiderate; not to mention, unprofessional. When a customer pre orders’ lobsters and you confirm a couple of times throughout the week if they will be available, then a business should hold up their end. Instead of being concerned or apologetic, to hear them say, «Oh well, we don’t have them, there’s nothing I can about it» is pathetic.

I go to Popular when I want to buy a lot of fish, or simply need a guarantee that the fish will be fresh. This is an old time fish market and it has that feel of something you used to find in the old South Street Seaport. It is a no nonsense, hustle and bustle fish market that deals primarily in whole fish. The prices reflect the real time market demand as fish move through this place very quickly! Standing at the ready is a crew of about 5 seasoned butchers ready to gut, cut, clean, or fillet your fish. I love this because it means I can customize my cut, or I can save more money by buying the fish whole and do my own prep at home. The high turn over rate is the draw for me here as I know I will get the freshest fish at a fair market price! One warning if you plan on going is that the place can get crowded at times and so you may need to take a number, but it still moves quick and provides you time to savor the experience.

Never been to this place but I am at work and called today at 9 am to find out what time they are closing. The guy that answer the phone started to yell over the phone that he just opened up and I am asking what time he is closing!!! Buddy I don’t give a rats ass what time you open… I need to know if I can make it there after work!!! You sounded very arrogant to a potential new customer. Now I prefer to give my business to another vendor.

I ordered a bushel of crabs and it was half the price of places down the jersey shore. Quality of the crabs were very good although I did notice a couple that pushed the legal limit(imo) and a some females. That’s not their fault though. They just sell’em and can’t check everyone in a crate. It was early morning and it already had a nice crowd and you can see there are people that travel from the ‘burbs for their fish which is a testament to the selection they offer and freshness, I will be back.

Ultra fresh fish make this place worth a trip. I think its Thursdays when they get still flopping fish from Portugal. Half the store is dedicated to bacala, as it should be – this is Ironbound!
