It’s just not the same as nizi Rutherford :(the fish is much fresher in Rutherford. They gave my friend her meal like 20 minutes before everyone else at the table got theirs. She was the only one not getting sushi and it was coming from the kitchen but they should have that more organized. They have some work to do.

Dinner time. The bar seems decently stocked no complaints there. Ordered spring roils to start, when the cane out they had a very interesting nice texture. Kind of flaky which was a nice twist. However, they were kind of half cold half warm. The inconsistency in the temperature combined with the greasy texture threw me off. The dipping sauce was good though. Next was the spicy tuna roll which was pretty good. Final course was the chicken teriyaki which was decent, nothing special. The wait staff was friendly as well as welcoming. The décor was pleasant as well. Being that this is a sushi place, i would definitely come back. Just without the appetizers.

One of the only three sushi places I eat at and trust in the world because I’m a paranoid vegetarian. The other two being in Princeton and London. Came here all the time when I was an undergrad at Rutgers, and still do when I’m in the area. Sushi is always amazing and they have great vegetarian options. Presentation is beautiful, service is great, and has a classy but fun ambiance. Great place to come at night and hang out — they have a pool table downstairs among other things. Drinks are all amazing — and sometimes the bartenders will make a special drink for you and then name it after you! Karaōke nights here are also very fun.

While the food was amazing the service however, SUCKED. I went here for a b-day lunch with a friend. There was a few mis-steps along the way. 1) My friend ask for a fork because she is not use to chopstick for her meal which was a bento box and she waited for 10 min for a flippin fork 2) one of the waiter was kinda rude when taking our orders 3) they tried to get a extra $ 5 tip when we already tip them. I don’t know maybe its better on the weekend but during a weekday never again will i go.

I come here for lunch a lot and I love this place. I’ve gotta the hot stone pot with beef every time I go here because it’s just so delicious. The fried egg on top is everything. My only complaint is that it is a bit pricey for a lunch spot. Can’t afford to pay ~$ 15 for lunch every day, but it’s a nice treat!

Can’t go wrong with the Peppered Tuna appetizer, this time I ordered miso soup, two peppered tuna appetizers and a Philadelphia roll and it was just enough! Never a bad experience at Nizi & they give sample soups!

Such a great relaxing hideaway from the craziness of downtown Newark. Me and my hubby or just myself come at least once every 2 weeks. The food and service here is so good I appreciate that. I’m so happy I found this place.

Maybe my taste buds have been spoiled from DC’s food scene, but I was so disappointed. I was in town for the weekend for a concert(woot Big Bang!) and my friend and I wanted Thai but it closed at 4:00(wtf???) so we came here. I ordered an eel roll(I could eat 3 rolls, easy), the sweet potato tempura(I love when places JUST have sweet potato, not lumped in with other veggies), and the chicken teriyaki appetizer. First thing to come out was the sweet potato tempura. It’s sprinkled with cinnamon and comes with some opaque, cream-based sauce. Huh. Okay. I was reminded of the sweet potato fries from Ray’s Hell-Burger(re: not even remotely Asian) but I tried them anyway. They’re good, obviously sweet from the cinnamon-sugar, which takes away from the authenticity, but at least it’s legit tempura batter. The chicken teriyaki appetizer was a pretty large serving and the chicken itself was good(not too tough or dry) but man oh man where did we go wrong with the actual teriyaki? Even the stuff from a bottle in the grocery store tastes like teriyaki. This had a weird spice to it and was definitely not traditional teriyaki. The eel roll was the biggest letdown. When it came out, I was honestly confused. It didn’t look like a traditional eel roll. First, there was a ton of rice(which, a lot of places do to skimp in the actual ingredients, and not like this place is high-end) but it didn’t even seem to be sushi rice(my friend said the same about his California roll). Additionally, the usual sauce/drizzle that comes on top was totally missing so the whole thing was a lump of dry, yet overly sticky rice. I ate 2 pieces and called it quits. Everyone else seemed very satisfied with their food(the girls from Rutgers next to us were quite voracious) but I couldn’t deal. I was glad I got a side of rice with the appetizer because that’s what I ended up flling up on. I would give 1 star but the service was good — our server was prompt and really nice, so the place itself is run well. Unfortunately, when the food is this disappointing, nothing makes up for paying money for an empty stomach.

Nizi Sushi is wonderful ! They have some awesome lunch specials during the day, and its always well priced. If you come here on a tuesday or thursday, they have awesome music playing for the special karaōke nights. I always get great service here. The staff are friendly and attentive. You really can’t go wrong during happy hour, and they have a great selection of craft beers. Sushi tastes great– Can’t go wrong with any of the special rolls. Sashimi is always fresh and they have the best tasting ikura(if you like fish eggs). They’ve updated the outside patio and its beautiful to sit out there during when its nicer out. If you go to nizi sushi, you will not regret it !

I went out with my friends for dinner here, and I’m happy to say that it was money well spent. For sushi, I think it was appropriately priced, the service was wonderfully fast, and as expected, the dishes were aesthetically sculpted. I had ordered the calamari tempura for an appetizer and a shrimp tempura roll. The calamari tempura wasn’t anything spectacular; I’ve tasted better(it could’ve used some seasoning, or simply salt and pepper?). My friends enjoyed the spicy marinara sauce that accompanied it though. And I think the shrimp tempura roll tasted fine :) Overall, I would come back to eat here again.

I’m gonna have to agree with Cathy here: «I had really, really high hopes for this place from reading the reviews, but I was really, really disappointed. Let’s start with the service. There were 2 servers for the entire restaurant – including inside and outside dining areas. No restaurant should ever abuse its servers like this, especially during lunch rush hour. As a result, the servers were overworked and brusque(which I don’t hold against them), and everything took a very long time to come out. The 2 chefs(once again overworked), weren’t wearing gloves and, again, service was very slow. Additionally, everything had a distinct taste of having once been frozen. The salmon had an overly firm texture, and the tuna was very not fresh. What really knocked it down to a 1-star for me was the following: I specifically asked if they had fresh uni(fresh, not frozen, which I emphasized), and the server confirmed as such, but what was served to me was clearly formerly-frozen, low grade uni. I won’t judge a place for not having fresh uni, but I will judge a place for lying to its customers. « My experience with the tuna and the salmon was the same as Cathy’s. I didn’t expect high-quality fish, but I definitely didn’t expect low quality fish either. The salmon was an odd color, and when I ate it, it definitely didn’t taste good. There were also 2 servers went I went as well(3 – 4 weeks ago). I understand how hard it is to satisify customers, but I hope this experience is not a reflection of their daily sushi quality.

The key to judging a sushi place is on the quality of its sashimi, which is the fish in its purest form, without hiding its flavor and freshness(or lack thereof) beneath tons of sauce or spice. I will definitely NOT be back.

Great find for the area. I love that they were serving Allagash last time I went in. My husband and I shared an Inferno roll. The waiter warned us that is was spicy, like really, really, spicy. We kind of laughed and strugged it off. We love spicy food and usually when someone says something is spicy, it’s never spicy enough. Boy, were we wrong. Delicious roll, but my god, it was actually spicy… Like pits of hell hot. Touché Nizi. We are fans!

An outstanding addition to Newark, Nizi brings a new brand of food with Japanese/Korean food. I personally go at least once a month, if not more. Staff is appropriate, sometimes spotty, sometimes very attentive, but I’ve never had a bad experience here. The sushi chefs at the bar are very good, and friendly. The staff remembers you if you return, which was a nice feeling. Food is very tasty, freshly made, and affordable. Small bowls of soup or other snacks are often comped which is very nice with your meal. Never left hungry, and I would never eat sushi anywhere else in Newark. It’s not as good as it was when they first opened, but it’s still good for the area, and it’s not as good as the Rutherford branch, but even still, it’s an amazing Sushi Restaurant for Newark. A good mix and great variety of food, multiple seating arrangements such as at the bar, inside tables, or out back. I think there’s even seating downstairs.

I first heard about Nizi in Rutherford through a friend, and really liked the food there. The restaurant was very small and there would normally be a long wait during busy hours. So I was super excited when another one opened up in Newark. This location is a lot more spacious comparatively and has a bar. Since it is owned by Koreans, I normally order the spicy chirashi(hwe dup bap) which has a lot of fresh sashimi on there complete with veggies and rice. You would pour this korean hot paste over it, and it is super delicious. My fiancé would normally get the beef kop dol which is also a great korean stable. I also tried their seafood soondubu and was pleasantly surprised at the size and the quality of it. I normally don’t order rolls here but have made the mistake of ordering the inferno roll. Unless you enjoy hot lava in your mouth, stay away! I ordered this for a second time since I forgot, and relived the burning pain again. The kind waitress brought out a huge pitcher of water for me, and kept asking if I was okay ._. The service we’ve experienced is always super friendly =].

Wow what a gem in Newark! I would leave campus once a week or every two weeks to get some sushi from here either dine in or carry out. It’s always fresh, not overwhelming with rice, and never disappoints. I’ve come here and had some friends order tempura and even their teriyaki lunch specials that are also quite nice. Service is quite nice, except during the summer when they start swatting that electric fly swatter around… xD It’s easy to miss but keep your eyes open for this place, especially when hit with a sushi/Japanese food craving in Newark!

This is the place you want to go to have great sushi in the Newark business district. The sushi is fresh. One of my favorite rolls is the New York Yankee roll. It has Eel, Spicy Kani, Apple, Avocado and White sauce. Miso soup is very good. The vegetable and meat dumplings are super delicious. You can get them steamed or fried. The place has a full bar. The customer service is very friendly and efficient, particularly if you go there during your lunch hour.

I came here while en route somewhere. I was surprised to find such a nice little sushi restaurant tucked away along a quiet street in Newark. I sat at the counter since I was by myself. The servers were very nice and accommodating. They replaced my chopsticks immediately when one fell, filled up my water quickly and explained all the menu items go me. In the end, I stuck to my normal veggie sushi selection. I ordered 3 rolls, taking advantage of a lunch deal. My sushi also came with miso soup, which I liked. The sushi came pretty quickly, considering it was prime lunch hour. I thought they were pretty good. The sweet potato tempura pieces were quite large(took me 2 bites), but the tempura was well done. My other sushi was decent too. Overall, pretty good sushi, but nothing spectacular… although I may find my experience better if I tried fancier rolls with fish. The place is small, but I can see it being a good, pretty affordable go-to sushi place for locals. If you’re looking for good sushi while in the area, give this place a try.

Had a delicious vegetarian kop dol. I replaced white rice with brownand asked for kimchi. It was in a scorching hot clay pot and comes with a fried egg. Traditional dish isn’t very flavored but the Korean sauce they gave was onnnnn point. You thought sriracha was crack? Wrong. This is. I was told it’s made from fermented bean. Whatever it is, and Koreans love to ferment(like kimchi which is pickled and spiced cabbage that’s aged) — it was delish! Their lunch portions are huge! Service is great but wait us at least 20 minutes got food during a busy Friday. Will absolutely return! Highly suggest.,
