I have work in Newark for a number of years and have been a member of the YMCA for about 8 years. The facilities are general well maintained and there is a great deal of equipment, large swimming pool, 2 regulation basketball courts, racketball courts, steam room, and child care, There are many class from martial arts, zumba, spin, and it has parking. Part of your membership dues support the youth activities and create a safe place for the youth to have a safe place to go as well as camp activities during the summer.

Since the Y at school closed down, I wasn’t sure where to work out. I’m not very picky when it comes to gyms but my ideal gym has standard weights, a power rack, and a barbell. My criteria are simple aren’t they? Maybe not. Well I tried a few gyms in the area and I always had something to complain about… some gyms didn’t use standard equipment, while others were simply too far of a drive. The YMCA, however, has everything I need equipment-wise. Furthermore, this branch is parking friendly(friendly enough), located in a somewhat safe area, and very close to my apartment. Overall, the gym equipment has its ups and downs. The dumbbells need some serious love – quick somebody call the maintenance guy. The cleanliness is questionable as well, but I have seen worse… much worse. Lastly, the layout of the equipment needs to be reorganized – sometimes when I workout, I feel like the walls are closing in. Seriously, somebody rearrange this clusterf*** lol. They do offer many different types of isometric machines for those machine-happy people, and they also have plenty of cardio machines, benches(for all u brahhhs), and ab crunchers(get dem 6 packs brahh!). Quite frankly, I don’t use most of the equipment, but for those of you who only do deadlifts, squats, and benching like me, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find all you need at the Newark YMCA :)
