Kumon Math and Reading Center of Newark

Silly Asian parents pay way too much for extra math homework for their kids. It’s NOT «tutoring»!! The philosophy is that the kids learn from their mistakes and learn on their own. The only time you are in contact with the teacher or high school tutors is when you are really stuck otherwise you are encouraged to do it yourself. The Reading homework was a joke, I rarely saw any parents pay for the Reading portions.
All Kumon centers are cheaply-​rented and definitely do not spend any money on their students — broken chairs, scratched up tables, NO A/​C in the summer times… the smell was awesome.
I would never ever send my kids to this place and just the thought of Kumon makes me cringe. I’m pretty psychologically scarred from it.

I worked here for 2.5 years.
I still don’t know math.

I used to go here, actually I was forced to as a high school student as my asian parents were education demanders!
It’s basically repetition and you sit alone and work on printed sheets. The tutors, I guess local high school or college students, grade your papers and give you next weeks. Every few weeks you get an exam to see your progress. I think it just builds speed and memory.
My nephews go here now. One of them likes it and one of them despises it! I think it’s quite pricey, and it must have gone up since I was in high school. Which wasn’t too long ago, but long enough to warrant a price increase :)

I don’t know how they are now, but I remember going here as a little girl and they sucked. Why? This is because you’d expect them to not make a mistake with checking your math, but I caught that messed up twice and it was BASIC math. I mean as a little girl it would indicate that your smarter than them and I’m going to be real that did feel good, but I like people who got their shit straight. you know?

Math was never my friend and as my parents ruled out mild retardation as to the reason for my lack of comprehending numbers being put together, Kumon was the next step.
How hard was math for me you say? Well, I often had a problem speaking what I saw and this only came with numbers. Try it. Ask me to say 145,211 out loud. Well, I cheated since I tried picking something that wasn’t that hard, but if you get me out of the blue I’ll stutter a bit. I also don’t know if you count this as math, but I hate reading clocks. Obviously not the digital ones… those only take me a couple seconds.
As this was a long time ago, I don’t remember the exact feeling of hatred for my parents caring so much. The part I enjoyed about attending Kumon was that I got to see my cousins AND go out to eat at MaMon Luk after. SCORE! Suck at math and get fat!
I remember that I was being tested and they found out that I over analyze the problems while I was right the whole time. I’d get all the long division questions, but struggle on the easier ones. Hmm… I’d like to do some math problems now… Brain Age isn’t that hard.
Long story short, I made it through high school WITHOUT taking Geometry/​Trigonometry and practically whizzed through college with flying colors raging in the 3.7 gpa range if you must know. BUT I did also learn how I hate math, thus causing me to take the route of a Psychology major, of which I only have to deal with statistics.
If anything, send your child here if they have a problem! My Brain Age is 23! Haha! Take that… numbers!
Oh, and I’m really good at Sudoku. I’ll toot my own horn for that. If Sudoku is even math.
