5Rhythms

The 5Rhythms is a holistic improvisational dance practice created by Gabrielle Roth. Her ‘Waves’ classes are run by different teachers and held at studios across the city. The High Vibration Waves event was a deejayed ass-​shakin’ free for all in a gorgeous open studio with a hundred sober, sweaty, hot-​bodied dancers. I though some seemed to be having religious (or maybe LSD-​induced?) experiences, but they were just deep into a pure freedom of movement. There is some gentle instruction and a switch to live percussion after one hour, with a renewed focus on the 5 Rhythms, (flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness). It was amazingly liberating for the body, let me forget about the drama in my day-​to-​day city life, and was obviously a fantastic workout at the same time. I can’t believe I can come back for it every Tuesday night!
