Great Sushi, wonderful and tranquil atmosphere, and excellent staff. I always looked forward to having a meal at Hokkaido. Yes parking is a bear if you wanna get really close to destination, but it’s really difficult anywhere in downtown New Paltz. I do highly recommend this place and their Miso soup is the best I have had… truly, it’s killer. It’s a great date night atmosphere too and just super chill vibe all around.

My new favorite place to eat. After hearing so much about this place I decided to take a walk with my friend and made him point it out to me. It’s a typical NP treasure. The entrance is in the back or side depends on how you approach it. But the food is delicious. We ordered several apps from the gyoza to the spring rolls everything was fresh and light.

Stopped by Neko for dinner tonight but they were closed so we tried Hokkaido instead. What a pleasant surprise to find they have outdoor seating! Dinner was delicious. We started with a blue crab stuffed avocado, most delicious. Hubby had the sashimi platter and I had salmon sashimi with avocado slices. The fish was generously proportioned. This is the deal breaker with sushi restaurants for us… If the sashimi is stingy we won’t be back. Happy to report that here they serve nice big slices! All in all, our dinner was tasty and it was a treat to eat it outside in the lovely weather. Service was on point. We will definitely be back!

My go to sushi joint when I’m in new Paltz. Love Hokkaido. Great atmosphere. Fresh product. Not on Main Street like the other sushi joints, but stays in business because of the quality.

The sushi there is really good. But all of their other stuff is really good. I recommend the salmon roll and shumi dumplings with sesame sauce. Everyone there is very friendly and the décor and atmosphere are really nice. If you want to go cheap go to P&Gs but this is the best sushi in new paltz bar none.

Definitely the best sushi restaurant in New Paltz! Delicate decoration and high quality fish. It only has few tables, which are all very small. It probabbly is not good for a corporation party, but perfect for a pair of lovers or a small family weekends dine-out. Their price is a little bit higher than the other Japanese restaurants in the town, but it worth! Its king salmon roll is sooo fantastic. My GF and I was very impressed by it.

It’s is my favorite Japanese spot in New Paltz. Fish is fresh. Tea always comes out blazing hot. Be sure not to burn your hand on the cup. Ebi is priced for one piece but they give you 2 pieces per order. Service is good. Nice woody Asian style décor. Small cozy spot good for a date.

The door entrance is actually slightly hidden on our first visit today. It looks like someone’s back yard… Very small dinning room with huge yard, must be great for summer and fall. We sat at the bar today since we didn’t make a reservation ahead and there was a bigger party around the same time. The food is very fresh, our server is very attentive. The atmosphere is very homie and relaxing. The price is reasonable. Though finding parking is the worst, I would still come back for another visit when weather is nice.

Food was good and I loved the ambiance of the restaurant. Very pretty aesthetic and delicious sushi. But we got our check and literally one minute later the manager comes over and goes«We have a table waiting for a reservation so please leave.» I understand if we were lingering or being obnoxious, but we hadn’t even had time to open our bill(which, by the way, was pretty large.) For the amount I’m spending here, I don’t want to be shooed out! Probably won’t come back as this put a really bad taste in my mouth. Shame too because the food was good but definitely not worth the rudeness.

No. To be fair, I ordered various sushi today and tempura only but I think that I have a good sense of their abilities. Their sushi rice was unseasoned, plain rice, still warm when put together into sushi. These are critical sins of amateur sushi chefs. I doubt that there is a legitimately trained sushi chef there. While this was not the worst sushi of my life, hence avoiding 1 star, this was the most bland sushi-attempt. The tempura batter was typical of the pseudo-Japanese, Chinese restaurant type. Just incorrectly done without the respect to do it correctly. And the dipping sauce was bland too. So all in one word: No.

Went here with a friend who recommended it and was happy to have found the place as it was very good. It is a bit small inside as we were seated right next to another couple — our tables were touching — so it was a bit hard to talk without them hearing our conversation. My friend and I shared five rolls and all of them were great. Very fresh and flavorful. And the place was packed — people were constantly coming and going and picking up take-out which was a good sign. I look forward to going back to try some of their other rolls and appetizers.

Best sushi we ever had. We live in NYC but haven’t find anything like this there yet. We stop here every time we go upstate and this place never disappoints! Big portions, very reasonable and delicious!

Best Japanese restaurant in New Paltz, if not the area. Great atmosphere, great service. This is my go-to place whenever I’m thinking of eating out.

Japanese food is definitely my favorite. I’ve eaten at many different places all over the country and always compare them to Hokkaido. Whether it’s the sushi or noodle soups everything has deep savory flavors that keep you coming back and set a standard that other restaurants have to check up to. To me sushi should be soft and buttery and definitely not fishy. Sushi should be tender and smooth and not require lots of soy sauce and wasabe to mask the flavor of what’s on the roll or on the rice. This has never been an issue here, unlike other local sushi restaurants in the area, where the rice is hard and the fish chewy. The soups are fantastic! Nebeyaki and Sukiyaki with sobu noodles is amaze balls. The steak in the Sukiyaki was so tender I cut it with chop sticks. Steak can get very tough when served in a soup but this was awesome. Get the appetizers, the shrimp dim sum is ridiculous, the dumplings are good, I’ve been to quite a few dumpling restaurants, they can’t be touched, but these are a great way to start if you’re new to the cuisine. Miso and clear soup rock. Trust me, try it you’ll be happy.

Friendly staff, intimate room but in need of an update. Both of us got sick after a recent meal. Not food poisoning but severe bloating. Won’t be going back any time soon.

I work in the area and this has been my weekly go to place for a few months now. The food was always great and I have never had an issue until today. The owner was there and when I went to pay for my usual order he told me I couldn’t use a credit card because of their $ 15 credit card minimum. Mind you, I eat here on a weekly basis and my bill is usually around $ 10 – 12 and I’ve never had a problem using my card before. When I brought the fact that I’m a regular to his attention, he very rudely told me I have to either pay with a check or go find a bank. The waitress apologized and accepted my card, but because of the rudeness of the owner I may never go back. Good thing New Paltz has a few other sushi options.

We’ve been here twice… once we felt the food did not live up to the pretty setting. The second time the food was better. First, the restaurant is lovely to sit in although it can be noisy when full. I had a bento box with dumplings for lunch and an eel roll that I ordered with cucumber but came with avocado. Nonetheless, the eel roll was delicious and pretty to look at. The miso soup had just the right amount of tofu and seaweed. I got pan fried vegetable dumplings which were excellent — filled with fresh vegetables in a tender wrapping. The box also came with rice, cucumber salad, a tuna cut roll, ginger & wasabi and you could have many different versions of it. My friend also had a bento box this time and loved what he got but, the previous time we ate here, he had udon — a favorite of his — which he said wasn’t all that it could have been. Their iced green tea was great(no sugar.) We were really happy with the meal and service.

This place is definitely a favorite. I love the intimate atmosphere and how friendly the staff is. Their combo plates are an excellent value and everything I’ve tried there has been delicious. If I’ve ever wrinkled my nose it was because whatever it was just wasn’t my taste, but still good quality. It is slightly higher priced than some of the other places in the atmosphere, but for the food and the atmosphere I find it to be well worth it, and I’m on a student’s budget
