I’m going to dream about the fried cheese curds. The ham and cheese spatzle is incredible. We ate at the bar and the bartender was awesome! He was super friendly and let us try every beer on tap(or atleast would have). You have to come here and pig out. Totally worth it. Bonus points for karaōke night on Fridays.

We’ve been to Alpenhaus a few different times. Each time the food and service have been fantastic. On our most recent trip we were there for our anniversary. Once again the food was absolutely phenomenal. The tap list is always refreshingly good. I had the potato pancakes, pork schnitzel with extra spaetzle and the crepes with vanilla ice cream for dessert. My husband had the cheese curds, the Wurst Sampler and the chocolate cake. Kate was our waitress. She was friendly and funny while clearly working her tail off. I can’t say enough good things about this place. Easily the best German restaurant in CT. I’m already looking forward to our next trip!

Definitely not authentic German food. Average food, nothing stood out. Ordered the Black Forest cake for dessert — dry and didnt taste good. Will not eat there again. #disappointed

By far the best! Delicious food, from appetizers to desert! Delish!!! We are lucky to live local, so this will be our regular spot for dinning. The staff are exceptional and care so much about ensuring your experience is a good one! We just love it!

Nice atmosphere and decorations. This was the first time I had been to a German restaurant and eaten German food. I don’t know where to start. I ordered the Beef Rouladen. It was salty and I’m not a fan of gravy. It came with pickled red cabbage and speitzle. If you like German food give it a try. Everyone seemed to like the food. My family and I generally eat Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern food. I’m afraid German food is not a good choice for us. The service is good. I think I’ll try it again.

Wow wow wee wah! Absolutely delicious German food and beer. I went here about two weeks ago on a Friday night with my fiancé and our friend. We were seated on the lower level of Alpenhaus, what a good decision. It was pretty warm upstairs so sitting downstairs was a really good decision since it wasn’t hot downstairs, I’m assuming all the lighting upstairs was causing it to be a little warm. Upon being seated, our waitress was super friendly and polite, very attentive. I’m a beer snob so I was really excited about trying their selection of German beer. My fiancé ordered a really delicious amber German beer, he of course let me have a taste, it was very good, so good that I ordered the same type of beer. The beer that we ordered had a nice light amber taste to it, it was absolutely delicious. When it came time to order food, I had two different types of bratwurst with a side of sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Everything was to die for, the mashed potatoes melted in my mouth. When our waitress came over to see how everything as going, she told us about karaōke so we definitely had to sing badly in front of strangers because it’s karaōke. It was a fun night filled with delicious drinks and food and good company, if you haven’t gone to Alpenhaus, what are you waiting for?

Yes indeed, a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience from start to finish. Thanks to Unilocal,I found this restaurant while out driving in the western part of CT. The Alpenhaus is located upstairs and is a little more formal than the down stairs Steinboch Tavern; it took me a bit to figure that out but once I did did I headed downstairs. The restaurant has been open for a year and half and I was told by Jeff, the Barman,(please note — not bartender) that they had just launched their new menu. I started with a glass of H D Reisling from the Mosel Wine Region in Germany which was absolutely perfect. This was followed by a house salad with caraway seed dressing that was simply Richter scale spectacular. The main entrée was Schweinshaxe(pork hock), Kartofelnpuree(mashed potatoes) and saurekraut. The pork was tender juicy and delicious accompanied by a pan sauce that was out of bounds upside down amazing! The mashed potatoes and saurekraut were delicious and as authentically German as Marcus the chef owner of The Alpenhaus/Steinboch Tavern. For dessert, I had the Apfestrudel with vanilla ice-cream this entry was no less spectacular than the rest of my meal. To close out my repast, I had a glass of Asbach Uralt(German Brandy) with several drops of Wigel Pomander Orange bitters, the perfect way to end a perfect meal. For those of you who like German Beer they have bottled and tap beers from Southern and Northern Germany as well as local craft beers and the standard selection of American beers. Jeff, the Barman, is a designer cocktail maker who is very knowledgeable about his craft: if you are interested he will give you a science lesson in mixology and recommend which drinks benefit most from the addition of cold smoke, oh yeah this is a chemistry lab masquerading as a tavern. Jeff’s knowledge, personality and craft orientated showmanship is delightfully entertaining and informative. If you wish to experience authentically prepared German dishes and a hearty slice of German Gemütlichkeit this restaurant should be at the very top of your list.

Absolutely fantastic experience! The food was great and the service was amazing. The owner came over and spoke with us for a while and even gave my brother a treat for his birthday. We will absolutely be back! I will tell everyone about this place.

Thank you Deb for serving us an amazing lunch. To start with, the Bread Dumplings in mushroom cream sauce for an appetizer — what comfort food — I just LOVE bread dumplings and these were amazing. Its been a while since I’ve been to a place like this, I had to have the Weiner Schnitzel with Spaetzle — also extremely good. My other half had the Bratwurst with Mashed & Sauerkraut — all in all a lovely afternoon meal we will remember for a long time!

Visited last week. Got there pretty late and felt bad about going in, but was absolutely craving some German food. It was an absolutely awesome experience. The server was amazing. He was friendly, funny, and made sure we knew about the specials in the bar area as well as the full menu. Even though we were the last diners, he ensured our food quality was up to par, and even offered dessert. Truly awesome experience. He informed us of their weekly specials, and I have been counting down the days until Mega Schnitzel night on Wednesday. Thank you for an excellent experience! I have been raving about it ever since. And PS… he did go home and eat the rouladen about an hour later! Excellent even reheated!

I visited this place on Labor Day weekend — it was completely empty! We weren’t even sure if the place was open. But I was aware that they have a bar area downstairs or around back that was filled with people at the time. The owner came and greeted us as we were a party of 10 and the only ones there. The waitresses there were all dressed in very pretty traditional German outfits. The décor and the different things hanging on the walls made the place extremely comfortable and homey. I ordered the cordon bleu. It came with mashed potatoes and carrots. Although it a little too salty for my taste, the meat was cooked perfectly! I enjoyed every single bite of it. And the portions are huge — definitely worth the price! We need a good German restaurant in NYC!

After working up an appetite at the Elephant’s trunk flea market, we stopped in here for lunch. Having never been here before, I was pleasantly surprised to a great lunch! Upon looking at what seemed to be a somewhat limited menu, I choose the bratwurst dinner platter and we ordered a potato pancake appetizer. The potato pancakes were almost as good as my Oma’s, they were just a bit too thick for my taste, but still very good. The bratwurst that I ordered came with potatoes and sauerkraut and everything on the plate was amazing! The sauerkraut was probably the best I have ever had and I wanted to drink the mustard that came with the brat(and I don’t even really like mustard!). For dessert, we couldn’t leave without trying the apple strudel and it didn’t disappoint. The crust was flakey and had many layers, exactly like you would expect of this classic German dessert! So glad to have found this gem of a restaurant!

This was an absolute fantastic surprise. First off, the setting. Walking down Bank Street is very picturesque as you overlook the Connecticut hills. Very classic New England Americana. The restaurant is decorated with various Bavarian memorabilia and other nick-knacks, and a Bavarian flag. The place was very new. The service overall was great… but somewhat inexperienced in certain respects. Our waiter was fantastic, knew what he was doing, and clearly knew the menu very well. The problem came when our order came out. Two people I was with ordered two different vegetarian entrees(and they are vegetarians as well) and the kitchen sent one incorrect entrée. We kept the order anyway because it would have been a waste to throw away perfectly good food that they could still eat. The owner came over to personally apologize and offered us some drinks on the house and comped the incorrect order. THAT is customer service. Oh! Before I forget… the food was awesome too! I got the Hungarian goulash and haven’t had goulash that fantastic in years. My only complaint is that they are doing business in CT and not near me.

Alpenhaus is separated into two dining rooms: a fancy upstairs and a more casual basement bar. My friend and I went to the bar, where we were greeted by the exceptionally friendly barkeep, who walked us through the menu of German favorites. My friend had the Hungarian Goulash and I had the ham Spaetzle, which is like a German Mac and Cheese. Both were decent, but didn’t blow us away. Both were served with a side of red cabbage, a tart treat that complimented the food nicely.

We have been here several times. It is not fair to compare them to the Old Heidelberg in the nearby town of Bethel but they are very very good. We have never been disappointed. A great place for bottled German beer. This is the main attraction for someone like me so I am hoping they will expand their collection a bit more. I recommend this place for its German wine. I have yet to try the Alpenfog — i hear they have great cocktails. Service is good and they will give you a quick explanation of food you are ordering. Meat-heavy menu but you knew that when you came to a German eatery. The spätzle is such a basic item that not everybody does well — it is perfect at Alpenhaus.

If you want to have foodgasms this is the place for it! Hands down the best German food in Litchfield/Fairfield county. The potato pancakes were delicious. The house salad is amazing and my main dish, a special of the evening(stuffed cabbage) was so fresh homemade, grandma couldn’t do it better. My BF had the Rindsrouladen — Beef Rouladen, check that off for delicious as well! They will help you pair a fine beer with your meal too, if your not sure what to select from the many offered. Wonderful, welcoming owner & staff along with the comfortable atmosphere made for a place we’ll visit quite often.
