Michael’s Dairy is a conveniently located creamery on the campus of Mitchell College. It’s a great place to bring the kids, meet with friends, and get some relief from the heat. Selection of flavors is excellent, and has rotating flavor choice specials which keeps things fresh. Of the 4 times I’ve been, all the ice cream that I have tried was very good. Their limited time flavor of S’mores changed my life… toasted marshmallow ice cream, generous chocolate chunks, and a salty, buttery graham cracker swirl. This ice cream is the perfect balance of that often badly attempted salty/sweet combo, but this hits dead on. Parking is easy as long as they aren’t packed, otherwise you’re sort off stuck behind the creamery and have to exit campus and return back through the other side on campus. Big negatives though, when I called the first time the person answering the phone was rude and flippant and didn’t answer the questions I had for her. Another time I was there, I was early waiting for a friend and the manager was talking with a staff member as they were opening the store. They were talking about other staff members and how they were not dependable and drinking sodas from inventory without paying for it and such. I thought this was very unprofessional since I was just sitting there, and they didn’t think they should move such a conversation elsewhere. Otherwise, Michael’s is a New London staple for ice cream in the area closest to ocean beach without having to drive to downtown. If they could just increase the quality of the conversational professionalism on phone and in person, they would have a really truly great thing going.

To the owners: Arrived at your shop tonight with 10 people at 8:59. Doors were locked and your teenage employees refused to acknowledge that we were at the door. Their wanting to hurry up and get to wherever it is kids go at 9 pm lost you a lot of money tonight. Shame.

Cute little ice cream spot on the Mitchell College campus. A great spot to hit after a day at the beach. I had my favorite, a butter pecan waffle cone and it did not disappoint.

The ambiance is a little plain, but the ice cream is delicious! Very creamy and obviously homemade. We went at the end of the season so they had Pumpkin flavor and a wonderful concoction called Witch’s Brew. The clerk was very friendly and her servings were more than generous. Reasonably priced.

Sometimes when I develop(food) itineraries for New England road trips, I add spots that I really haven’t researched before placing on my to-go list. Michael’s, as I found out when I spotted the sign 25 feet out, is on the campus of Mitchell College(a great US and specifically prominent in CT tradition for secondary institutions) and run by students during seasonally appropriate hours. We dropped a little over $ 9 for a chocolate shake and a massive ‘large’ with three scoops: frozen pudding, brownie batter, & peppermint patty — admittedly all poor decisions but the potential shone through.

We went for the sock hop and had a great evening of music and games. This was our second trip after reading about it in CT magazine. The staff were fantastic and let us try a variety of flavors while we made up our minds. A scoop of peanut butter cup ice cream and peanut butter fudge ice cream with hot fudge, YUMMMMMMMMMMYYY! I love that it appears to be student run and has events such as the sock hop for the community.

Four words. Strawberry cheesecake ice cream. I go here multiple times in the summer with my whole family. The ice cream is aweome, the place is quaint – used to be right on a dairy farm with cows… I remember the cows from when I was about yay tall. Now it’s just the scoop shop run by Mitchell college, but it’s still great. I’m from VT, heralding the world-famous Ben & Jerry’s ice creams… and whild, Michael’s ice cream may not be as whacky and ultra-flavorful as B&J’s, I would pick Michael’s for a little evening dessert any day!!!

Been going here since I was old enough to eat ice cream. I’m a huge fan of the peppermint stick or any flavor milkshake. It’s a simple old school ice cream shop and I love it just for that.

For the first two weeks I was in CT for work, I was told to go to Michael’s, go to Michael’s, go to Michael’s. It seemed like I would never get the chance, and then finally I got to go. I wish I hadn’t. The best thing about this place was the anticipation. I got the oreo cookie and the moose tracks. The bf got the frozen pudding and the triple chocolate. This is how bad three of those four flavors were: 1) the bf hated the frozen pudding so much, he peeled the scoop away and threw it in the trash and 2) I hated both of mine so much that I picked out the Oreos and chocolate covered nuts. The triple chocolate was fine but not at all good. Really cheap chocolate. The ice cream itself is what does them in. It’s grainy, with an absolutely horrible mouthfeel. Plus, probably to hide the fact that it is such poor quality, they just put more and more and more sugar in it than is necessary or edible. I don’t know how this passes for good ice cream. I’d rather have a pre-packed pint of Haagen-Dazs, and I’m not really one for pre-packed pints.

For all of the hype that I’ve heard about this place in the past month I would say that they live up to it. We went here after watching the cruise ship leave port(who knew that was an event up here) and decided that our bellies needed some ice cream. He got plain old chocolate and proceeded to wear it nicely =). I got the monster mash — vanilla ice cream, caramel swirl, malted milk balls, oreo cookies, and some other M&M type candy. I was kind of wondering if it came with a shot of insulin afterwards. It was soo yummy, but sweet, glad I only got 1 scoop. I can’t wait to come back more this summer.

I don’t even like ice cream, and I’d scale mountain ranges to go to Michael’s Dairy. You can’t beat the super thick milkshakes, and even the frozen yogurt tastes like heaven. Plus, no one laughed/banned me for life when I spilled my root beer float all over the counter. In fact, they made me a new one, free of charge. The folks at Michael’s Dairy are friends of the clumsy, and they do it with a smile, even while wearing those soda jerk outfits that are no doubt hot as balls in the summertime.
