Well, it looks as if the olé Gruene Onion has closed for business. Sad. :/

I remember this place a few years years ago and it was AMAZING!!! New owners and managers sent it crashing to the ground. I had recently got a promotion at the same time as my father and when we talked about our pat-on-the-back dinner, we both agreed on this place. We had been there plenty of times and it was always fantastic. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! I would have rather gone to Taco Cabana and had better food and better service. The manager/bartender was a waste. She was an older blond lady who thought her aged and worn body could fit in the jeans and tank top she was wearing. I’m in the restaurant business and have a Culinary Arts degree… 3 in fact. And the way that the guests are treated and the food they are served are nothing more than what you would get at middle school cafeteria. Thats why I always brought my lunch in school… should have done the same here. If I had 8 hands, they would would all have a thumbs down. THISPLACESUCK!!!

What to expect… 1. A very pleasant atmosphere 2. No flavor 3. not so great service 4. The menu stapes were okay & for the price okay doesn’t cut it 5. Maybe invest in culinary flavor 6. wobbly table 7. Seems like more of a wine château I’d rather have a thunder cloud sub, even if thunder cloud was closed, I’d wait.. . seriously

Service was rushed, food was ok. While eating salad, entrée arrived shortly after. I felt my meal was a little greasy; price was reasonable, no dessert menu at the time but the waiter said they were working on a new menu… would I return? Only if I had a coupon. Beer was cheap.

Had a mixed experience. Could easily have been great if not for some mishaps. Altogether, I would recommend this place. main issues were that 2 of the 4 at our table had chicken dishes that, while delicious, were actually raw in the center. i’m not talking about bone-in either… i mean thin chicken breast… that by itself wasn’t a show stopper, except that when I told the server, he said sorry, took the plate away, then nothing happened until the check came and nothing was done about it. I hate to be a prude and was not looking for a free lunch, but it wasn’t handled with the degree of care that one would expect, especially if you are subjecting your clients to eating raw chicken. Also the food was drenched in butter. still, the flavors were excellent and service was not bad overall.

Gruene Onion is by far my favorite restaurant in New Braunfels for several reasons: 1) Richard(the owner) is as passionate as they come for food, and Gruene Onion’s variety and unique offerings reflect this. He is also present most of the time 2) Reasonable Prices 3) The duck… seriously, get the duck — any variety 4) Low turnover in qualified wait staff — this doesn’t seem like a big deal but it is in New Braunfels where service is almost expected to be sub par in most restaurants 5) Some of the best food around at any price range 6) Small but tasteful wine selection Some favorites that may not be on permanent menu but are must try if you see them: maple balsamic duck, Thai Shrimp, risotto stuffed poblano, peanut butter pie(my wife literally cried when they took it off the menu), meatloaf, mocha crème brulet, pork loin. Really, you can order anything on the menu and you won’t be disappointed.

We recently visited Canyon Lake for the weekend. Some friends took us here for dinner and what a treat! Everything is homemade, from the dinner rolls(which are FANTASTIC) to the salad dressing(avacado cilantro is to die). I had a special order where I combined 2 dishes to make what I wanted, which was grilled chicken with the creamy jalapeño sauce and it was top notch. I got mashed potatoes for a side. We ended up closing the place down, chatting with the owner that we didn’t even get a chance to get dessert. Next time we’re in town, we will be eating here AND ordering dessert! A must try!

We’ve been to the Gruene Onion Grill many times, and always come away impressed. Their food is tasty and creative. The menu is obviously put together by people who care about providing something delicious and which you might not have tried before. The service is excellent — attentive without teetering over into being obnoxious. The atmosphere is quite nice, but not overbearing. One would generally feel equally at home in shorts or in a suit. The prices run a bit high in the evening, but if you’re there at midday, there are a number of good lunch specials that won’t cost you more than an equivalent meal at a chain restaurant would. Their salsa and other southwestern fare taste more like New Mexico cuisine than Tex-Mex, which is a pleasant change of pace if you enjoy those flavors. This is one of those places we bring people when they’re in from out of town. Terrific food, nice atmosphere, and quiet enough to actually talk — what more could we ask for?

I am a huge fan of the Onion. I’ve had better burgers and they were EXPENSIVE! I’m not into paying a dollar for everything you want to add to it on top of the I’m guessing 7.99 you already pay for it. I think, sorry I can’t remember, that the fries might be extra. Yeah, they were. 80% sure. C’mon, it’s really good but NOT the best of the best. The food is really great though. The atmosphere is great for a date. They have a bar that is attached to the building but separate. I dig the little bar because it has a nice little feel to it. I really like it all for the most part.

I was really impressed with their duck and their wine list, my friend love the tuna and the pricing seem so low for the quality that we received the whole menu seemed to be 10 to 20 dollars. I was especially impressed with the huge wine list at incredible prices, my friend loved the Mexican martini. We will go back on all of our future trips to New Braunfels to this restaurant just outside of Gruene the only negative I can say is the outside of this restaurant that is located in a strip center does not give a proper introduction to the incredible food and artsy atmosphere inside.

Nice place, cozy atmosphere and some of the dishes experimental yet good. The place is also known for it’s martinis and a friend of mine really love them there. The service is very attentive.
