We have two small kids(4 and 6) that take classes here, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. We’ve been to other karate classes in town and this is night and day better than anything we’ve tried. Sensei Paul and his instructors know EVERY kids name. For the younger kids classes they teach grappling, self-defense, and striking, and it’s not just punching the air(like other classes we’ve been to). They have a lot of instructors and use pads to ensure the striking is correct. He is excellent with the kids and demands their attention(and gets it). If that wasn’t enough, the thing that puts this class over the top is that he teaches respect, focus, energy, and many other martial arts principles. At the end of class he always takes the time to «teach a lesson» to the kids. Recently, it was about«effort» and how they should always try their hardest. He and the rest of the families in the dojo also make community service a priority, and gets involved directly with several impressive efforts. Fantastic instruction for our kids! I couldn’t recommend this place any higher.

I am surprised that more people haven’t reviewed this place! We live in Wayland and it is a team sports-centric town. It feels like EVERYONE does an organized sport. We spent a few years on that bandwagon and my kids hated it. My kids are not slugs, layabouts, lazy or unmotivated… they just did NOT connect with the sports scene. They finally asked us at one point, why do you keep forcing this on us when we clearly are not enjoying it or getting anything from it? We had to agree. And to be honest, as busy parents, we just were not in the mood for the demands on the weekends for games, travel time, etc. Plus, if a kid doesn’t start the sport from the beginning, it is next to impossible for them to step into it as an older child, very discouraging. My husband and I really wanted our kids I to SOME physical type of activity. Our 9 yr old son has a lot of energy and needed an outlet. A neighbor of my mother in law in newton suggested this place, saying her son, who had been there for years, really got SO much out the experience. So we gave it a try for our boy. I will be honest at first he wasn’t gung-ho. Here was Sensei Paul demanding his full attention, making sure he was working hard the entire class, and putting the kids through the paces. It is a different hour than just playing outside with your friends. After 3 sessions, though, my son started asking when the next class would be, could he go more. Wow! So then we dragged our 12 yr old girl to it. After 1 class she was hooked. After only a few weeks she was able to use a technique Sensei Paul had taught in class to defuse a boy bugging her at school without ever using any physical force. She was so proud of herself and so were we! I liked how when you first inquire about the program, the staff… that would be Dawna… gets right back to you. She is great about follow up, tracking you and your child’s satisfaction with the classes, etc. I like how there are goals to work toward. My son beamed when he earned his first stripe on his belt and couldn’t wait to tell his friends. I like the advice Sensei Paul gives the kids without being preachy. They seem to hang on and take in his words more than they would their parent, because that is how kids are. Plus he does cool tae kwan do moves that make them go «THATWASSOCOOL!» The kids get to scream a lot as well, which kids love to do. Respect is expected as well as given. He has helpers of various ages and stages in their training assist with the classes that are also fun for the kids to work with. There are 4 classes a week per skill level so you can work around your schedule to fit in what works for you any given week. That is very helpful for a busy parent. So if nothing else, give it a try. I believe that they let kids have a two week trial period to see if it is a good«fit». Uniforms are included, nice touch. There is a place for parents to sit and watch. Saturdays get busy.
