Great coffee and friendly folks here at Smallbucks Coffee. I love supporting Indy coffeehouses! I will be dropping Smallbucks on to my list of great coffeehouses coast to coast. You should be aware that Smallbucks is being sued by Starbucks. Apparently they object to the name and the logo. I understand they will be suing theaters that show Little Orphan Annie as well because of the character Daddy Warbucks. Wait, was Battlestar Galactica out before there was a Starbucks coffee chain? Isn’t one of the main characters named Starbuck? Did they steal the name from there? I think the show came out in like 1978. Did Starbucks start before that? Or did they steal the name from the television show? I have no idea. What about Roebucks? Did they sue Starbucks? Did they sue for Megabucks? Lots of sawbucks? If Starbucks doesn’t want to be viewed as an evil empire maybe they should back off the little guy… they were an indy coffeehouse once too…

One of my biggest complaints about working downtown is that there is only one good coffee shop, and it’s a hike from my office. So, much to my delight, when Small Bucks opened up in the Arcade I skipped my mornin coffee at home and gave it a whirl. They feature fair trade coffee, so you can drink it guilt free. I got a medium sized cup, which was big, and the coffee was delicious. Sadly, I forgot the name of the kind I tried. The guy working there was friendly and polite, and happened to have some great music playing that I wrote the name down I liked so much. Win for downtown!

I once said that a coffee place some time ago had lots of potential, and this is the exact same way. I enjoyed the coffee, and the proprietor seemed nice enough, but there’s just nothing else going on. As much as I believe that downtown needs more coffee shops, I was admire the pluck to put a coffee shop so close to a Dunn Brother’s and a Starbucks. The place is attractive but kind of sparse. Their entire menu is coffee: no tea that I saw, no breakfast, no bottled drinks. I appreciate the focus, but if I’m hungry as well as craving cups of concentrated caffeine, this might not be my first choice. Their name is very apt: the place is small, the prices are small, the menu is small. I like what they have, so far. But it’s not enough yet. I can’t wait to see where this place goes in the future.

Well, I just can’t get it down the road with bad coffee in the tank. I was a regular at Caffeine,(when it was on Demonbreun), because of the COFFEE, not because of the venue– although the vibe was always great, go figure. So, today I had my first cup at the new Smallbucks in The Arcade.(a dbl capp to be exact). They simply knocked it out. A darn near perfect flavor and blend, with no bs; just a great,(and reasonable I might add), cup with plenty of seating both inside and out. Cool artz on the walls too. Smallbucks has, in one singular brush with greatness, become my very favourite, new spot downtown! These kids are in it to win it my friends, lookout! Additionally. The sincere customer service, eagerness and the positive attitude was contagious! I can honestly say, it brought me joy to see such enthusiasm– heck it forced me to sit down and tell you about it here, 9 hours later. Now THAT, is a great coffee shop. PLUS, PLUS… they have a rad screen printing shop RIGHT upstairs. «A great espresso and a custom t-shirt while you sip?» Sign me up! Cheers~
