The food is decent. We used to come here for dinner and the food is about a 3 *. But the prices are too high for both the quantity, and esp. the quality. Also, they’ve had some challenges with the health department(SCCdineout), their scores are lower than other places around. We’ve stopped coming.

I love this place. I live nearby and I think I go about once a week. They have the best butter chicken in the world, I swear it has crack in it. My BF is Indian and his parents were born in India, and he used to think his mom made the best butter chicken in the world until he came here! Did I mention the butter chicken? Just go here, and get the butter chicken.

I’ve only been here at lunch for the buffet. The food tries too hard to be «fusion» and just misses the mark in flavor.

Sometimes I go to certain restaurants especially on Fridays or Saturdays more for their ambience than for their food. So comparatively this place has a nicer décor and isn’t like a hole in the wall. The food doesn’t meet my expectations of the punjabi/north Indian delicacies at all. If you order Peshawari naan it comes like a stuffed paratha and is way too sweet. Chicken currys are mediocre. Chaat dishes and chicken tikka in starters are OK. Not worth the price.

Ordered takeout. 1. Order taking was a disaster. The person who picked up the phone did not know the menu at all. After repeating everything 3 times I asked to speak to someone else. He apologized and took my order. 2. Now the food. I ordered Kadai paneer and a bell pepper dish.(Simla Mirch). Both these dishes were horrible. The Simla Mirch was over cooked. The stuffing was just a mushy mess. The bell pepper and the onion in the Kadai paneer was also way overlooked. No crispness to be found. I also ordered aloo kulcha which was pretty decent. All in all bad experience.

recommend the buffet here. It has a large variety esp for the vegeterians The food tasted good but nothing outstanding. Service was good and the hotel is big to accommodate large parties. Located in the middle of the busy street. The food price was decent.

«Friendly service and delicious food(Sea Bass — yum!) made for a wonderful evening. It’s a tad pricey for the food and atmosphere but we were prepared for that.

We went here on an evening around Thanksgiving. We ordered the garlic nan(the highlight of the meal), a biriani, and a chicken curry. All of it was fine, but this is the south bay. For a big price tag(and these dishes were expensive by local standards), the meat should have been more moist and the curries should have been more favourable. All and all, we paid more for food that was average. My partner got a Taj(always good) and I got a mango lassi – both predictably good. The ambiance was a bit more upscale than what you would find at some local Indian places – perhaps this is what you are paying for.

A bunch of us came here for lunch during a weekday. After we got seated, we were served water immediately. And then we noticed the loooooong lines to the lunch buffet, almost took half hour to wait in line for the buffet and get the food. I think they had a good spread of veggie and non-vegetarian dishes. From appetizers to different types of curries, veggie biriyani and sides, I must say that I was truly impressed. The food turned out to be good too, I think I went for 3 rounds that day and was so full that I skipped dinner that day. Their desserts were also neat. The waiters do a good job replenishing water and naan baskets. I’d certainly be more than happy to come back for another buffet at Shiva’s.

In the battle between the Indian restaurants on Castro St., Shivas makes a solid run at the crown. The ambiance is very inviting and solidly unique(at least from non-Indian restaurants). They have a solid lunch buffet during the week, and while the spread might not be as large as Park Balluchi, I think the quality is the same if not slightly higher. Service us always been responsive and on-top of things, at least for me. Prices are reasonable for non-buffet meals.

You can write this restaurant off your list if you are not much into indian food or greasy food.

Not worth the pricetag at all. I liked the atmosphere, but didn’t like much else. I think they were trying to look high class, but the food did not compliment that. The BF and I went here based on his co-worker’s recommendation. We thought because he was Indian, he would know the best Indian restaurant in the bay area. I respectfully disagree with his co-worker. The food was not interesting. The menu items are the same you can get elsewhere, but the flavors were not good. My Malai Kofta was almost unbearable. The couple seated next to us had to send a couple of their entrees back, because they couldn’t handle the spicy flavors. I’ll admit they were just too sensitive, because nothing I ordered was too spicy. One thing that really bothered me was that the menu posted in their window lists different prices than what is on their menu they provide in the restaurant. The menu outside is actually cheaper than the one inside, which in my opinion not cool and pretty deceptive. Overall, I do not need to come back to this Indian restaurant. Save your money and find a more hole in the wall place, rather than Shivas.

I have not had the experience of attending many Indian Restaurants, but maybe that will change after my recent visit here. The food was very good: some crazy version of Indian crab cakes, chicken curry, and flat bread. Very tasty, filling and comforting. As I said before, I do not have much experience to compare the quality of food against, but the ambiance of the restaurant and the service was excellent. Our server was quick to answer all questions we had, was very accommodating of my friend’s allergies, and had great menu suggestions. I guess, in the words of our former governor, I will be back.

New Update: I’m so happy this place hasn’t changed it’s variety of Indian dishes as well as their price for their super buffet. It’s still at around $ 13 with tons to choose from. Everything is fresh of course and the service is great. The waiters are quick with refills, orders, and re-stocking the dishes. They also do a great job busting tables and setting up new ones. For this cheap price, there’s no other way beating it. I’m glad everything is still the same! This is why I have to come back again!

I went here on a recommendation from a friend. I may have to rethink that friendship. Before walking in, I looked at the menu posted in the window and was surprised at how reasonably priced it was. I’m not used to fair pricing on Castro St. However, once seated, I noticed that prices were more of what I expected. The prices in the menus we were handed were $ 4 – 5 more than the menu posted in the window! I called it to the waiter’s attention and he just casually mentioned that the window menu must be out of date. No duh. Tacky. We got the samosas as an appetizer and they were pretty good. I got the chana masala for an entrée, and the lady got malai kofta. I thought my dish was decent but not amazing, and the lady’s dish was mediocre. At these prices I expect better(if they had matched the *posted* prices maybe I’d be less annoyed). When we ordered, they never asked us about spice levels. The spice level of our food was good for us, but the couple next to us were very upset about how spicy their food. I will say that the manager and waiter bent over backwards to keep that couple happy, so I thought that spoke well to their service. However, dishonest advertising and medium food make me sad. So I can’t recommend Shiva’s.

Went there for the lunch buffet and found the food to be average to mediocre. Everything was too salty but found the tandoori chicken to be the best choice along with the tiramisu crème. Service was prompt and good. Secondly my napkin smelled like mildew which was pretty damn gross. Third, please get the chairs professionally steam cleaned. Not trying to be offensive but the body odor of whomever was sitting there before had transferred to my $ 700 Arc’Teryx jacket which was hanging from the chair. Even after 5 consecutive washes, yes 5(hand washed once), it still smells putrid and horrendous. Trust me, it wasn’t the smell from the food lol.

I love Indian food, I love many Indian dishes, and I love the lunch buffet here. For about $ 15 total per person, your taste buds get to enjoy an array of delicious Indian food without breaking your wallet. The buffet has several meat & vegetarian options. Various items include: paneers, butter chicken, rice, naan, and desserts. I’m docking 1 star for service. Although the staff was friendly, I kept having to ask for more drinking water. I wasn’t sure if it was because of the California drought, however, the majority of restaurants that do not come around frequently refilling water have the courtesy to post it in the restaurant.

The Good. The food was relatively good. The butter chicken was mildly spiced and their tikka, and other chicken was tender. They brought warm naan to the table. They were also quick to refill water. The Bad. They are just a little too aggressive taking away plates. We were their for a Sunday lunch buffet, the place was half full. They guy took my plate literally 2 seconds after I forked my last piece of chicken. Can you please let me put my utensil down before clearing? Also, $ 15.95 is a tad high methinks. The UGLY. We just sat down, then got back up to get our lunch. When we returned one of our chairs was stolen for the table next to us. Way rude in our opinion. We had napkins off and were clearly ready to eat.

As what it’s name goes Shiva a great deity from Hinduism, this restaurant by far live to it’s name! It was Good Friday when I went there and as per tradition no meat on this day. So I started my gastronomic adventure with Shahi Samosa which is vegatables and nuts wrapped in thin dough and deep fried. It comes with Tamarind and Mint chutney. I mixed the two and my palate likes it. And a chardonnay from Acacia Winery. For my main dish I got a Sea Bass Tikka served in a bed of shredded cabbage and it’s in sizzling plate. The smell of the masala and other spices enhanced my appetite plus the sizzle sound. Also got a plain Nana. I’m not really a Raita fan. And to wash down the taste of this fine exotic food I got the saffron infused milk which reduced to the consistency of a curd and served it frozen . Service is very excellent. My server gave her honest and commercially opinion about the food too. I’ll return for lunch buffet, where there are at least 20 selections and the price is way cheaper than what I paid this dinner. Average tab per person without a drink is 35 dollars.

I came in for the lunch buffet on a Wednesday. About 2⁄3 of the restaurant’s main seating area was full, but not terribly difficult to get a table. We got seated quickly, the waiter filled our water glasses, took our order and then we got started with the buffet. The buffet has the typical indian offerings that you would expect at a buffet and a few additional items that go beyond the average american’s understanding of butter chicken. I enjoyed the fact that there were also some fish dishes, but would have wanted to see a few more veggie offerings. Overall there was good variety, food was hot and crispy(for fried items), and nothing seemed to be sitting in the chaffing dishes for too long. While reasonably priced, the food wasn’t anything to write home about, but good standard if you’re out with some co-workers and need to get out of the office for a quick lunch.
