Customer service could be a little better, but I only come here for the jerk chicken. I find that they make it better than some of the other spots in Mt. Vernon that have«jerk» in their business name, go figure. They season it perfectly, with the right amount of char from cooking on their metal drum outside. They give you a great mix of pieces, including wings, legs, breast, and thigh. I think their sauce tastes too much like bbq sauce though, perhaps too much vinegar. And their mac and cheese could be passed over, as I can get better mac and cheese from a box or make it from scratch that tastes a lot better than what they offer.

The best jerk chicken!!! We usually pick up and take home, I wouldn’t stay here to eat as there’s not much seating. Dont even bother with sides, just get more chicken. Seriously, you’ll thank me later. Would put that sauce on everything!

First I’m giving it 3 stars simply for the jerk chicken and the packaged cheese cake. I have bought both several times. There is a rude old Jamaican man who always works there who once chopped my chicken into 1 million pieces and that’s never good. He always gives shotty looks as if taking orders bothers him. He refused to give me another order while mumbling something I couldn’t understand. The food in the warmers always looks dry and old. But that jerk from the grill is always on point but only served after 4pm. Hard dough bread comes with the chicken so make sure you ask. The rice n peas wasn’t good at all. I have been getting white rice from the Chinese store next door which is cheaper than their over priced rice and tastes better. The juice fridge needs the inside wiped clean, and better lighting around food area as well. The owner always looks sweaty and frustrated. But cashier is always courteous.

I got a Grilled Chicken Panini w/lettuce, tomato and Jack Cheese and it was delicious and cheap. I went there to get their Red Snapper that I’ve had in the past(and was great) but they were not serving it this day. One thing that would be helpful is for them to print out some menus with accurate pricing. They did not have a menu when I went and even when I got an old menu from a year ago they told me the pricing is not accurate. There is no necessity to print expensive color menus, paper is fine, but accurate menus should be available for customers to take out. In the future, call and ask if they are serving the hot food of your choice before making a trip.

Don’t know why this place is listed as an italian deli when it’s clearly not… lol. This spot has some excellent oxtail curry and jerk chicken. They have a real grill inside where they probably cook all the stuff up on. Of the two times that I’ve been here, they have multiple jerk chicken halves ready to go. When you order one, they’ll cut it up and throw it into a container. Their cabbage side is quite good and you’ll be in and out of here quickly. Free and easy parking is an added bonus. They accept credit cards if you meet the minimum purchase.

I’m not sure how Italian got in the name… I wouldn’t classify it as Italian. Other than standard deli fare and griddle food like hot dogs and hamburgers, they serve Jamaican food. Up to last year, they had a couple of drums in the parking lot cooking jerk meats, but not this year. I’m not sure if they got in trouble for it, but they seem to have a grill/smoker inside the establishment. We went there for the first time a few weeks ago in search of some jerk. We got the jerk chicken, jerk pork, oxtail with rice and peas. Food was decent… I would go back if I had a craving for jerk. It’s not Vernon’s, but Vernon’s is no more.

Ok, so like I needed some rice to go with my dinner. Why not go to Poppy’s Deli to get a side order of rice n peas??? NOTTTT Mr. Brown wanted to charge me $ 7 for a small tin of peas n rice are you out of your mind!!! So I asked how much is jerk chicken n peas n rice he tells me $ 10.50. So for 3.50 more I can have a ½ jerk chicken meal. Never the less I left that peas n rice right there n the jerk chicken… $ 7 for a small tin or rice seriously… oh n plus tax!!!

The jerk chicken is decent, the Mac and cheese is ok but has a weird after taste, green and rice beans are okay. Nothing really special going on here. It used to better a few years ago. Not sure what happened. Averagely price.

Well, the jerk chicken has been taken over by non-jamaicans and so the quality of the chicken has gone down… Won’t be going back.

I walked in as a total outsider making my way back to school from the city, hungry from all the traffic. As I walked in, I could tell this was a neighborhood favorite. The menu has absolutely everything, but since this was a weekend, I was laughed at, given a lil’ bit of friendly attitude and told they only serve chicken and other specialties from the ‘buffet’. Turns out that was not a problem at all, because I had one of the best southern-style meals north of the mason-dixon line of my life. It included perfectly seasoned jerk chicken wings, collard greens, string beans, fluffy and buttery buscuits, and gooey mac n’ cheese. The food and the people working there had so much flavor! I had so much fun eating away at my heaping servings of food that I wish I could go back on a daily basis. While I didn’t get to try the rest of the menu, I have to say it looked delicious and based on my experience, it has to be. They serve many styles of food and I’m confident they do them all well using the freshest and highest quality meats, veggies, breads, and everything else that goes in to making Poppy’s Deli a memorable experience.
