Joseph Birkenheier Tuckpointing and Masonry

Birkenheier did a terrible job building bluestone steps outside our Evanston front door. Constructed using mortar that clearly is wrong for the job, the mortar crumbled, cracked and popped out througout within a year of completion, the bolts installing the metal hand rail came loose and are pulling out, and the sides of the steps, smoothed over with some sort of light-​colored concrete, is all buckled and crumbling onto the ground below. With all this instability, the bluestones themselves are cracking and breaking. When I called to ask them to come and remedy it, they provided me with a price quote of $ 1,100. This after more than $ 2,500 was already spent with them 1.5 years earlier. We’re going to have to tear the whole mess out and start again, with someone else. Avoid these guys, big time.

Birkenheier Tuckpointing was hired to do work on my multi unit building. Joseph came out for the initial walk through and talk about work that was to be done. He was meticulous in his approach and took pictures of all of the areas I wanted done. He is a 3^rd generation tuckpointer and is very knowledgeable about the process. I have been in the building management business my whole life and let me tell you he has an eye for detail. Joseph pointed things out I didn’t notice before and let me know things I may want to fix down the road. We worked on the immediate concerns I had and now have a to do list of things I may want done in the future. The crew came out and were there when promised and were a nice group of guys getting the job done. They were clean upon completion and did the work they had quoted very professionally. The pricing is fair. I have had work done by «the cheapest guys I could find» but that I have learned is where you will be doing the job over again in a short amount of time spending even more money. I have had several other tuckpointers come out and work on my building in the past and have never invited any of them back for follow up work. I am however having Birkenheier Tuckpointing come out from now on for any and all of my masonry needs. Thank You for the Great Work!
