In Hulk-speak: –gelato good –pizza no good… not sure why, they have special oven and, if I may add, hundreds of years of trial and error in human history to figure out how to make a good marinara and crust, which are the essential components of a good pizza(clearly, the Hulk went to finishing school, good for him!). This is the second incarnation of Al Portico and while I feel like Jerry Seinfeld rooting for Baboo Bot and his Dream Café with the owners of Al Portico(who, no doubt, bring the Italian charm) I am sorry to report that the food is sub par. I will write more later on for sure… stay tuned!

It took me a long time to try this place, but it was well worth it! I had heard the gelato was awesome and it is. I have only tried the pizza and the sweet potato fries and they were terrific. Out of all of Montpelier’s pizzeria’s, Al Portico is the best on quality and affordability. I can’t wait to try some of their other fare!

I swung in here to get take out after driving past it every day for 6 months or more. The place was empty, but it was 3:30 in the afternoon. I think the staff are family, so you get that really sweet, welcoming family energy. I ordered Penne with Meatballs and a black coffee to go. While it was a little expensive for the amount of food I got, the food was delicious. It had gotten a little cold by the time I got to work and settled in to eat it, but even cold the homemade marinara was amazing and the meatball slices were to die for. Also, and this may seem like a small thing, but the coffee was really good. It was a delightful surprise how perfectly balanced it was. I don’t know if they have a cheaper lunch menu, but if their prices came down a little, I could eat there often, and would! They are also a pizza place, deli, and gelateria. So, lots of things to sample in the future!
