Walnut Ridge Campground

If you are looking for a quiet campground within walking distance to a lake for boating and near a dam for good fishing and within 2 hours from Chicago, I would highly recommend Walnut Ridge. Seasonal lots are spacious without being sandwiched between other campers. Located in Monticello Indiana, it’s 15 minutes from Indiana Beach Amusement Park. There is a playground for the relatively few regular children campers. The owner is not overly intrusive in your business and is a welcoming presence on the weekends. The bath house and showers are well maintained. While there are few planned activities, there is an annual fall pig roast where families gather pot luck style. For those who wish to maintain accessibility to familiar dining, Lafayette is just 30 minutes away with every restaurant imaginable, including Dog n Suds, including car hops! We’ve been camping here for 7 years, although we left for one year to try another campground with more activities and a pool. The owners there hovered over the campers with their rules and even chased down our guest on a golf cart for not stopping at the entrance and registering (yes; cop-​like!) While this may sound like an advertisement for Walnut Ridge, it is not. I genuinely recommend you consider making Walnut Ridge your family’s new weekend destination.
