I used to eat here weekly before the old owners left. I have been there twice since and it is sad, the food is just not made with love anymore. There is one girl there that also seems to just not want to be bothered to help you or even look you in the eye. There is also a lot less meat on the sandwiches now. I do love that they did not change the menu though.

Homemade corned beef was amazing (please keep it in stock after St. Patrick’s Day!). They also have homemade roast beef, turkey, and ham — so nice to see a deli that still makes their own stuff and not just sells the standard Boar’s Head and Thumann’s).
They also have gluten free bread!

The best deli in Montclair. Hasn’t changed much in the some 30 years I’ve been in Montclair, except for the addition of some great sandwiches. Today I got the Gary #2 and it was awesome, also try the Mitch.

I give it four stars because I walked in and waiting 10 minutes as the people behind the counter socialized to get my called in order. Not too happy. Otherwise, it was my first time getting sandwiches here and I got the angry dwarf and the sand which. Both super yummy for turkey sandwiches. Definitely going to try the others!

Meager portions from these new owners. I’d skip it. This is the 2nd time I’ve eaten here in 2 weeks. Both times a meager amount of meat on the sandwiches. Not going back.

Went here based on other Unilocal reviews. Just finished up the «Angry Dwarf» and it was simply amazing. The place is very clean and it is in a nice area.
I will be returning to try the other signature sandwiches.

Have heard this wonderful deli is changing owners. We adore their sandwiches, especially Angry Dwarf, Russian Dwarf, The Sandwich, and the Sloppy Joes. Often order for my tennis friends too! Please keep making these delightful sandwiches!

Great deli with a unique selection of tasty sandwiches. From the Angry Dwarf (turkey, muenster, tomatoes, onion) to the G-​4 (buffalo chicken, Swiss, honey mustard) I’ve never had a bad sandwich here! It’s clean & although busy, always enough friendly staff to accommodate. A Montclair favorite!

Hands down the best deli I’ve ever been to. It is incredibly clean and organized, and the owners behind the counter run a really efficient operation. It can get really busy at lunch time, so it helps that they move so quickly.
The Angry Dwarf is the way to go. The bread is perfectly toasted, the salsalito turkey adds just the right amount of spice, and the muenster cheese tops everything off. LOVE this place.

My stomach is growling just thinking about a sloppy joe… Yummy! Great location, wide variety of specialty sandwiches & food, copious amounts of sides, and an incredibly friendly staff. From the Angry Dwarf to the 3 Different Gary specials, all are money in the bank…
Personal favorite is the Meatloaf hero with Hot Knish and Ketchup…
Lets not forget their soups… JACKPOT!

Deeelicious sloppy joes! The bread is not the classic thin rye I love, but overall these were excellent.
They also make them with gluten-​free bread, but I prefer extra gluten when I’m eating.
Potato and cucumber salads were also very good.

I would have been more generous with my stars if they would only bring back white tuna. Arguably the best Deli in Montclair but I have to say, over the years it has «dumbed down» a bit. Still fine but the tuna sub– «A must to avoid». don’t attempt to come in during lunch hour during ths school year– You might be online for ½ hour!

Unbalanced sandwiches. I ordered the roast beef and there was a couple of slices. I just dont get it. Unfriendly staff. Below average deli and if pride was measured by the way a sandwich is supposed to be made. Well there is very little then. Pack the sandwich correctly.

If you know what a real deli looks and feels like, you will surely appreciate Watchung Delicatessen. With an abundance of lunch options (my choice is Otto’s Club), expeditious service and perfectly crafted sandwiches you will be transported immediately to local independent deli heaven.
In a world of quantity over quality, Watchung Deli stands out by flipping it and not rushing to get your sandwich into your hands. You end up with a sandwich that was put together the right way, in the right order and with care so that when you eat it, it doesn’t fall all over itself.
If you want to act like a local, look for the line right when you get in and wait to be acknowledged. They will let you know when it is your turn, even if you have no clue you are up. Order a special sandwich, you won’t be disappointed.
