Writing this ASWEARESTILLSITTINGHEREEATING! Hands down the best sushi we have had in this area, and possibly even better than the sushi where we used to live, which is a very Asian area. Delicious! Fresh! Can’t wait to come back.

Amazing sushi and great prices! The sushi combos are a great deal at around 14 dollars for 3 rolls soup and salad. The black rice combo tastes amazing. The texture is great which is usually an issue when places try to add in healthier options to sushi rice. My fav sushi place in Montclair.

Good neighborhood sushi spot. I am a complete sushi snob, haven’t eaten in Tokyo and most of the NYC top places. It’s perfectly good most nights. And the folks who run it are really lovely. Good but think solid neighborhood place.

I took an older friend here who is sushi resistant. He thoroughly enjoyed the two rolls we ordered, the Star roll and a Spider roll. The black rice used was visually pleasing and had more taste and texture than the usual white. Yakitori prepared right and edamame fresh, hot and salted just right. Waitress was personable, when my friend asked for a fork, she brought one, but also took the opportunity to present my friend with a pair of training chopsticks to practice with during the salad course, next time no fork for him. I had a very good BiBimBop serve in a hot stone bowl and my friend enjoyed his Boolgogi. Nice to have a few Korean options to enjoy after a few goods sushi rolls. Price point was reasonable. Definitely will be back to this well run friendly establishment.

Very good sushi place with friendly staff and good sushi. Need to try again to get a sense of consistency among different rolls but the Summer Roll we had was very good. Also tried Yaki Tori appetizer and it was well cooked and had nice sauce. Rice is ‘black’(cooks purple) which I had not had before and is enjoyable.

My favorite sushi place! Consistently great and the service is the best. The lunch roll is delicious. For dinner I love the roll for two. Great variety of rolls, Japanese and Korean food.

Just left this place with my husband. The service was EXCELLENT! Delicious food and a very relaxing ambiance. They make their sushi with black rice which I just found out is pretty good for you. I’m assuming it was quiet inside because of the holiday so the normal crowd is somewhere bbq’ing. But we’ll be back for sure and hope to get the same delicious food and great service!

Sushi Koshi is my go-to place for sashimi in Montclair. The sashimi is typically fresh — not the best I’ve ever had, but good for its price. Koshi also offers mixed rice in addition to white rice — a plus given the mixed rice’s higher nutritional value and better taste. Their sushi rice(plain white rice) isn’t so great as it’s not properly seasoned and lacks that subtle, vinegar-y kick. I don’t eat the rolls at Koshi — if I want rolls I go over to Kim’s Sushi in W Orange. However, if I want straight up miso soup, fish and a bowl of rice, Koshi is my choice given its location and less waiting time. The staff is very friendly and pleasant.

We came here for a spontaneous sushi dinner. The place is nicely decorated(even the servers wear traditional Japanese outfit). I had the bibimbap and it was amazing. We’ll surely come back.

My favorite sushi spot! Service is always great — very friendly and attentive. Food is fresh and tastes amazing. We go at least once a month.

I would call Sushi Koshi the General Tso of sushi. Many of their special rolls are covered in some sort of sweet sauce and a tempura’d item is added within. The essence of simple raw fish is lost. That being said, it can be tasty and the fish is fresh, however it becomes overwhelming if I eat too much. Next time I would stick to the more traditional rolls/sashimi and order only one sweetened roll. What sets them apart is the mixed rice option. Instead of plain ol’ white rice you can order your roll with white/brown/black rice. The texture is a tiny bit al dente and the taste is grainier which I actually liked. The menu also offers Korean food i.e. Bibimbap, bulgogi fried rice. The woman who runs the restaurant is very sweet and provides good customer service. The last time we were there the waiter forgot to denote mixed rice for two of our rolls. We brought this to his attention and the manager came over to tell us they were going to correct the mistake and we can keep what we had too, nice! As far as price, it is moderate. Overall a good local spot for sushi especially for those who like their sushi on the sweet and crunchy side.

This place has great service and delicious food! My boyfriend and I randomly decided to try this place out last saturday and we didn’t regret it. It seems like it’s family owned.? But everyone was just so nice there. They made sure everything was great and the place even smells nice too. doesn’t have that fishy smell to it like some sushi restaurants. We saw lots of families eating there and I could see why. It’s somewhere my bf and I would like to come back a month, 1 year and 10 years from now and even bring our family too. We had the lovers boat for 2? I forget the name but it was a very generous amount of sushi, sashimi, and rolls on a boat. They might be byob, not sure but seemed like it was. Thank you for such a great dinner out experience sushi koshi!

By far the best Sushi we’ve had so far in Montclair. It’s a unique and traditional setting. Very clean, quiet and the the music in the background sets the mood for mind sitting and great food tasting. The 3 roll variety sushi is your best bet, size is generous and the Tea and soups are to die for as well. We know we will be back soon.

Excellent service and great sushi! Small place in a strip of other food joints, but easily this one of the leader of the pack. Decently sized menu of sushi and other specials, and usually comes with free soup before your sushi gets there. Reasonably priced and the workers are always walking around with a smile on their face which you don’t usually find at other sushi joints.

I must say the service is extremely nice and I liked the atmosphere… but I wasn’t impressed with the sushi. They serve black rice, not brown. The rolls were tiny and came with more rice than actual fish for the same price as other places charge. I ordered a side of Yellow Tail and Eel — tasted fresh.

I met with two of my friends last night for dinner and one of them suggested this place based on the Unilocal reviews. Let me just say, THEREVIEWSARERIGHT! This little hole-in-the-wall is a GEM to say the least. The staff couldn’t be any friendlier. They make you feel like you’re part of the family as soon as you walk through the door. We started with the shrimp dumplings as well as an order of the vegetable gyoza and the avocado salad. Both dumplings were outstanding and the avocado in the salad was extremely fresh and delicious. After that I ordered the House Roll and the Lobster Tail Roll. I’ve had sushi in many of the top restaurants around the country and this ranked right at the top. Next time I will try their mixed rice instead of the traditional white rice to compare the difference. All in all, I couldn’t have been happier with my experience here and I highly recommend that you try it for yourself.

I am not a huge fan of sushi, but for some reason my friend and I had a craving. Honestly, after having sushi at Sushi Koshi I had an addiction. It was so good, and reasonably priced. Of course, now when I get sushi anywhere else I am not happy :(. Anyway. Sushi Koshi blew my mind.

Having read the glowing reviews about this hole in the wall sushi joint, I had high hopes. We booked a reservation for my inlaws who came in from South Carolina and looked forward to a great casual meal. One caveat, there are few cuisines I consider myself to be a purveyor or connoisseur of, but sushi is really one type of food I have a very discerning palette for(we have eaten Japanese and sushi all over the world, and are unafraid of trying everything including blowfish and other delicacies) While the atmosphere is virtually nonexistent, the restaurant appears to be either family owned and operated or run by a nice group of people who do try hard. We arrived and were seated in the back room close to the bathrooms.(not the greatest spot but the place is just lacking in design and layout) Our wine was opened quickly and they offered to refrigerate it in the back-so far so good. The specials didn’t really appeal to us so we shared a seaweed salad, a green veggie roll, a few more elaborate sushi rolls, a tuna handroll and a few pieces of sashimi-I ordered uni sushi and a few pieces of hamachi and tuna. No toro that night… disappointing. We asked for extra ginger and low sodium soy. I specified ponzu in lieu of and they accommodated me. During the course of dinner, several gnats or fruit fly-esque bugs kept circling around us. Very unpleasant. As for the sushi, the combination black, brown and purple rice is visually appealing and quite tasty but the rest was down hill. We are not big eaters but the pieces of sashimi, while texturally good and yummy tasting, were quite thin and small. I have also never received such a tiny amount of ginger and an even tinier(pea size) amount of wasabi. We asked for more and they obliged. The rolls were small(which is not necessarily a bad thing) but there was almost no filling amidst all of that rice. The handroll was almost all rice with so little tuna and the maki rolls were so disproportionally filled with the«black» rice. The fish was fresh and tasted fine but overall this was one of the most disappointing sushi places I have been to in a while. Perhaps I should have gone to Aozura or Dai Kichi which are both reliably decent/good. The redeeming thing about this place is the service since they seem to care and aim to please. It is a shame the food just didn’t cut it.
