I live around the corner and never think of going here because I thought it was expensive, but it is not. I see why they get good reviews. Friends took me here for my birthday and it was really nice. The ambience is really nice, drinks were good, and the food was not bad. I preferred the appetizers than the food. I will def go back and maybe then I can give it a higher rating, but I would recommend to anyone

Came here for a quick drink Thursday afternoon. It morphed into a whiskey tasting event. A rep from the whiskey company asked if we wanted to join the event upstairs. Not really a whiskey drinker, but why not?!? haha Also, had a sample of the pizzas – so good! The outside patio is really nice and relaxing compared to the inside which was slightly noisy. Will definitely come back and try more of the menu.

Went here on a Friday afternoon, waitresses/bartenders standing around laughing loud and just yapping away. This place isn’t sure if it wants to be fancy or if it wants to be cool. But it felt like an awkward mix of both. I ordered the calamari as an appetizer and the short ribs. The calamari was decent but nothing special, very bland but nicely cooked. I cannot say the rib roast was fresh, I nearly vomited two bites into it and gave it back. It definitely was not cooked that day. Very dry, over cooked as if it was heated up multiple times. Tomato sauce was thick and congealed, again like it was sitting out. The drinks are overpriced, and the waiters are borderline bimbos. I would not recommend.

Came tonight for mom’s birthday dinner, both my parents had been with cousins a couple of times, and this was my first time coming to this place. Usually I do not like bars, I find them entirely too loud and crowded, but this place is quite open and spacious, and there is an outdoor dining area. Getting seated once we walked in was confusing as it’s not clear where the main entrance is or where you’re supposed to go in. There’s a parking lot round the back(behind Walnut Street) with an entrance, and that’s where the host/hostess’s tall desk is rather than at the Walnut Street front entrance. So, not knowing who was supposed to be guiding us to a table, we awkwardly kind of walked through the place with the help of a few clueless waitstaff to the hostess in the back of the restaurant from where we entered who sat us outside when we asked. Apart from the seating bumps in the road, the food was absolutely delicious, and service was good. Friendly waiter. I had red snapper for the first time, with some fragrant tasty South Asian rice. My mom’s falafel was too spicy, she couldn’t eat it. We also kind of filled up on delicious appetisers and just sat outside leisurely as it got dark out. An evening well-spent.

Food was excellent and the beer selection is above average. Waiter was missing a chromosome or two but we walked him through the night taking baby steps. Atmosphere is nice, dimly lit and lots of dark wood looked like rich mahagoney. The only issue was that finding parking was nearly impossible but that’s just the nature of the area. I’d go back again if the opportunity arose.

First of all, a place in Montclair with a parking lot is a treasure. This place also has great décor, I love the fact that it almost looks like a house. The cocktails are great & the food does NOT disappoint. As an appetizer, I had the falafel platter & it was delish. On our way out, the place looked like it was filling up near the bar so it seems like it would make a good place for drinks. I’ll definitely be going back again!

New chef? New bartenders? New hostess… New owners? Perhaps an off day but this is our go to favorite place. Tonight was a disappointment. I’ll give it a generous 4(they don’t have 3.5). It’s always been a 5++++!!! We’ll give it another shot hopefully it will be back to its extraordinary self. (No hostess was there to greet up on a moderately busy Monday evening though the waiter was attentive and friendly, my favorite muscle dish(my favorite dish and I’ve had almost everything on the menu over the last two years) was more bland then usual and the whisky smash(which was my new favorite drink a couple months ago when I discovered it here) was eh. Having faith and returning.

Came in Saturday afternoon for lunch. The décor is somewhat rustic with copper antique lights hanging from the ceiling. I decided to sit at the bar. There are several TVs for viewing in the area. Ordered the Mexican fish tacos. I was under the impression I was going to get the same fish tacos served in the adjoining restaurant Halcyon(same owners). These tacos had less fish, spicier and were served on soft shells. These tacos were fair. The tacos in Halycon have lots of fresh cod and are served in hard shells. Ordered the Sticky Toffee Pudding with caramel sauce for dessert. Now that’s a dessert to write home about!!! The male bartender was particularly nice. Sorry, I didn’t catch your name. The restaurant is good for people of all ages. Just to mention, outdoor seating is available. Egan and Sons share a back parking lot with Halcyon. Street parking is available too. Rating 3.5 Stars.

I have been going to this place on and off for several years — used to be an awesome experience. I have moved back to the area, after 6 years living in Austin, TX — was excited to revisit the places I once deemed great. After a street festival on Walnut St in Montclair I decided to round up the group of friends visiting from NYC and other parts of NJ at Egan & Sons, partly because it was convenient, and because I remember this place being pretty good. Sadly, with the craft beer movement in full swing in NJ, I’m disappointed to see a weak variety of craft beer offerings at Egans. In addition the hostess, was pretty much nowhere to be found, so we had to seat ourselves. The bartenders were even worse… It took 15 minutes to hunt them down and get our next drink… One of them was complaining about being hungover, and not wanting to be there. After seating ourselves, we had caught the hostess attention and requested menus… She plopped the menus onto our table and disappeared. Our waitress was the worst offender… She seemed like she was over it and simply hated life — a very«meh» attitude and just gave off the most depressing energy. Overall this was the worst experience I’ve ever had at Egan & Sons… I had to constantly apologize to my friends making up excuses for this place… They were all made to feel uncomfortable. It’s quite simple, if you hate your job, or your life, then don’t work in an industry that has to deal with people. Also it’s time to catch up with the times Egan & Sons; improve your selection of beer offerings, and come up with better cocktails… And it’s time to get rid of those stale Frites…

Love the décor. The clientele was mostly young professional. The cocktail menu was extensive. Sevice was great bartenders where friendly an even though they had alot of people to service they where still very attentive. Heard food was great but didn’t order so I’ll update next visit.

I love Egans in Montclair! The beer and and liquor selection is endless. The food is consistently great every time I visit. The pizza is my favorite but they do offer delicious entrée items. They have a dj on Saturdays and I would say that it is the best time to attend it you’re looking for something to do on the weekends. The atmosphere is a classy irish pub! It’s a beautiful environment with people of all ages. It is a very clicky place so I wouldn’t advise you to go there looking to meet people if you’re out of town. Go with friends or on date.

We came in for a quick bite and decided on sharing two appetizers: curried chicken platter and bbq maple wings with a side of regular cut fries. Everything came out in a timely matter and were all piping hot(nothing worse than lukewarm food!) more importantly everything was so delicious! Curried chicken was very mild and came with garlic yogurt, pita triangles, and small serving of brown rice. The wings were crispy and packed some heat — not unbearable though. Served with a very delicious and creamy blue cheese sauce and come large celery sticks. From the outside the restaurant looks like a whole in the wall but when you enter you quickly realize this place is big. There is a parking lot in the back. We didn’t realize this and ended up paying for street parking. Also surprised to find that the place is family friendly– lots of children. We had a great time and would highly recommend this place.

Burger: Came with cheese, I asked for none. No lettuce. No pickle. No onion. No tomato. Just came with over-cooked fries and a non-toasted bun. Oh, and a dense waiter.

This place is cute. I came here for after work drinks and dinner w friends and coworkers. It’s pub fare with the expected range of drinks(I think they had some specialty beers, I’m not sure — not a huge beer drinker). I stuck to my wine, which both times came out in a dirty glass: side eye: and had the grilled chicken sandwich, which was ok. Chicken was a little dry. Nothing crazy to my experience. Everyone else said their food was good, which ranged from burgers, to the special of the day… This place is advertised to close at 11 — I thought that meant they stopped serving food then. But I think I was wrong, by the time we left(shortly after 11), it was completely empty — to the point that I got the feeling they were waiting in us to close up. Coincidence? Maybe — we were also there on an off night. Parking is hard so leave extra time for that. Overall this place is cute and located in a cute area, I would go back… after checking out other restaurants around there.

LOUD!!! Wanna grab a bunch of friends and go hang out a bar, this is the place to go. Young and vibrant crowd, they stay quite late also. We were there to meet up for dinner with a few good ol pals, and then seated, and all agreed we should have perched our buttons somewhere quieter. Overall, its a nice spot in Montclair. For a place like this to exist in this area is perfect. There a few places to park also which reduces your headache once you get in. Our crew got there a little late, seated by 930pm « – ish and they were generous and patient with us. We ordered some of their best meals, sat for an hour or two, in the midst f great conversation and catching up, we nibbled and masticated on them well cooked streak, calamari, salad’s and some good ol’ ribs. Food was great, our seating for 8 or so was just right, and the waiter was actually good. He worked with passion, we didn’t feel bugged too many times, which is a great asset to any restaurant. Because, sometimes in the mainframe of flipping tables, they might end up loosing customers. We didn’t feel rushed at all. Why are we giving this place a 3 star? Well let’s make it a confident 4STAR! Cheers!!!

Decent pub, but I thought it was expensive for what I had and I did not find the menu interesting. Very popular with yuppies looking for a bar scene.

Came here to eat on a not so crowded Sunday afternoon. There was plenty of parking and seating available. If you go after 5 it becomes very packed here otherwise. Maybe it was because it wasn’t busy, but the food took a while to comeout. And to my surprise the wings that we ordered came out a good 15 minutes after our food did. We are already finished when they brought them out. I was certain that they have been forgotten. The wings were also extremely dry and overcooked. Also the grilled cheese that my son ordered was so salty that he couldn’t even eat it. The beer that I normally order was flat and undrinkable. Our server has changed it for another and that was was good. I was not impressed with food or the pace at this place. Our waitress however was very nice and accomodating, if it wasnt for her I would give this place 2 stars.

Went to Egan & Sons for a chill night out since it’s seriously so close to my apartment and loved it! First off, they are open until 2 am — not sure if they stop serving food earlier. BUT! This place is pretty cool — let me break it down: 1. Crowd was young professionals 20s-30s 2. This place is so much bigger than it looks! You have 5 different areas where you can drink/talk 3. They have an outside patio area where there are couches and tables to sit at 4. Music playing but you can still have a conversation Other: 1. I read a bunch of other reviews that said they have a dance floor in the second floor — that night that area was closed so definitely coming back to check it out. 2. The dress attire is «wear whatever you want» — there were some people that were wearing super casual clothes while others looked like they were going clubbing. Overall: BIG, cool and chill bar to hang out!

This review is based solely on their wings and bar pizza. The wings are AMAZING. The sauce the wings are coated in is so delicious and they have a certain crunch about them that makes them very distinct. I think they are the best wings I’ve ever had, hands down. They were so good that I started eating them immediately and totally forgot to take a picture, woops! Also, they are served with a creamy blue cheese sauce for dipping and this is also amazing. I am usually not a huge fan of blue cheese at all but there is something different about it. Its not at all chunky, which I like. Its lighter but still has the perfect amount of flavor. I’ve also ordered the bar pizza and it was very good. Its a little bit bigger than what a personal pie looks like, thin crust and was cooked well done(which to me is a plus). I will update my review if I ever come back for a more formal dining experience but until then, Egans gets 5 stars from me!
