If you read the reviews on the rest of the Internet, they are all very good and that is exactly how I feel. I grew up in Minneapolis, but lived in the suburbs as an adult. My first move back to the City has been at Hiawatha Flats. As a City employee who hears the horror stories of tenants in various rental properties, I am happy we chose Hiawatha Flats. I’m a Minneapolis kid so St. Paul is just not for me. I love my city. Rent isn’t cheap, but it is the city. What do you expect? The location is perfect. Close to the lakes, falls, dog park, and many indoor activities. You get city living without the headaches of the city. Underground garage is extra, but worth it so you don’t have to deal with snow emergencies or cleaning off your car in the early morning before going to work. The staff is great. Inez, John, and Colleen are all very friendly and have great customer service. Apartments are spacious for city living and the amenities are great. Aren’t indoor pools always cold? Maybe I’m just sensitive. I don’t mind it though. The heat is what the hot tub is for. Lol.

This is not a luxury apartment complex. It pretends to be, but fails miserably. We rented a 1 bedroom + den that overlooked the railroad tracks(nothing so picturesque as a view of downtown that you have to hang over the balcony railing to see). The indoor pool is ice cold year round. We assumed, when we moved in during the summer, that it would be kept at a reasonable temp through the winter. We were wrong. When we commented on it the office manager Coleen stated it was kept cold due to city ordinances; which turned into some lame story about the recommendations of the ‘pool company’ when we showed her the actual city ordinances about indoor pool temps. They offer a bevy of neat common spaces that tenants can reserve free of charge. We thought this was great, until we realized that we regularly had to clean the rooms ourselves before we could utilize them, and then there were the days when we got to the theatre room only to find that Coleen had sent her kids down there to hang out, regardless of the fact that we’d reserved it. And, frankly, don’t get me started on the condition of the property. Bleach stains down hallways, veneers peeling off, and a garage that smelled like a slow cooker full of garbage in the spring & summer. Oh, and don’t forget the proffered easy dry cleaners who over charge and permanently screwed up dress shirt collars, and broke buttons. To put a big bright bow on it, at the end of our year lease we received a letter thanking us for being tenants, and explaining they were raising our rent. That’s right, the rent amount that we discussed at move-in was suddenly an intro-rate. We ended up moving from our little apartment to a beautiful 2000 sq ft 4 bedroom 2 bath house in St Paul for $ 150LESSPERMONTH than what Hiawatha Flats intended to charge us. I really don’t recommend this place to anyone. If you want to spend too much money on an apartment, there are far better places you could go. On the plus side, John & Robert were always very funny, personable, and nice to work with. They always did a great job watching our cat & plants when we were away and brought our packages and dry cleaning(mangled though it was) right to our apt.
