My husband and I just moved to Minneapolis from Colorado and people have consistently been telling us about this burger invention of patties stuffed with cheese. We have Midwestern roots so figured we couldn’t go wrong in trying it. We waited until 8pm to arrive to reduce our waiting time– it was packed but we only had to wait about 20 minutes for a seat. We started with some drinks– nice beer and wine selection. Our server was friendly and helped us make our selections. My husband had the monthly burger special– Lumberjack. I chose the Longfellow with goat cheese(I love goat cheese). We shared tots and fries so we could experience both. Overall the food was fun and creative. we thought the tots were great, fries were above average. The burgers though were just not what they were worked up to be. They were too well done for our taste– dry and flavorless with no «juice.» At the end of our consumption we both shrugged and stated we didn’t love it. We will definitely be back to try the wings and if we ever try the burgers again I think I’ll insist on leaving some pink to the meat.

Went here last night and ordered the Bake N Loaded burger. It’s got potato chips, sour cream, green onion and cheese on it and supposed to resemble a baked potato. It was really tasty, burger was cooked well and the flavor combinations worked all around. I definitely wasn’t wowed by my burger but it was delicious nonetheless. I also tried the Jiffy burger which is topped with crunchy peanut butter. Really really tasty burger, I would definitely recommend it. I was pleased with the visit. Also if you’re torn between which Blue Door location to visit, I would recommend going to the Minneapolis location. Its much bigger, more seating and standing area and has the same burger pub feel.

My friends and I LOVE this place!!! The atmosphere is great, and there’s almost always some kind of wait-which is no biggie, just have a beer and chat with your date or your friends until a table opens up. Some items I would recommend are the cheese curds and the Spam bites, yum! I haven’t been overly adventurous with the burgers, but I know that I love love love the Longfellow Blucy! By recommendation of our server, I added mushrooms to it(take that Matt’s Bar!) and it was the perfect harmonious blend of sweet blackberry sauce and goat cheese. YUM! Worth a try if you aren’t scared off by the goat cheese! Definitely in my Top 5 burgers ever!

The pastramilicous was awesome! Great recommendation by the bar tender, but I am going to have to get back here to try the jiffy.

Always too long a wait to get in, but always worth the wait. Delicious burgers, fries, and onion rings — they have ‘a gift’ when it comes to burgers… great selection of beers as well, and portions are large and fun to share with your group. Always excellent helpful staff when we’ve been here.

You’ll most likely have to wait, but it’s worth it. The burgers are delicious and it’s a great laid-back atmosphere. Get the Cajun tots on the side of your burger and you’re set.

I live two blocks away from the blue door and maybe go twice a year now. Each time I go I regret going. It’s a very interesting crowd not full of locals but mostly a college kid crowd though I’m not sure from which college. I wish I could say the burgers are great but I definitely had a Bangkok burger there once and was sick throwing up the entire next day. From previous times, the black bean burger is not good and super crumbly. There’s not as many add-ons to make the burgers interesting or customized unless you get one of their specialty burgers which after the Bangkok incident, I don’t recommend. The acoustics in there are horrible, and it is so extremely loud in there. The only time I would recommend going it is when they first open and it’s quiet on a weekday. They do try to sell local beer, which I appreciate, but in the middle of winter there was only one winter beer variety. Given in the quality of food at other establishments closer by, it’s just not worth the trip, the noise, the potential rush job on the burgers, and the non-neighborhood vibe.

Had lunch here today with my daughter who is a student at St. Thomas. Our dinner salad was fresh and delicious. When our burgers arrived mine was not what I had ordered. Three different people apologized as they made a new one, then comped my meal! Delightful service and delicious food… we will be back!

This has to be one of my favorite burgers I have had since moving to the Twin Cities last year, and I have eaten a lot of burgers! The cheese curds are phenomenal, the local brews are fun, and the burgers and tots are… wowza! I have to tell myself to slow down when I am eating so that I can savor it! Every time I have gone, I have gotten something different. My favorite so far was the cajun redux but I like to give an honorable mention to the jiffy burger, the baked and loaded, and the classic blucy done cowboy style! My favorite appetizer… the cheese curds, of course, but nacho tochos are close to my heart(and maybe clogging my heart a bit too). The one reason I hesitate to go five stars is that the service has been truly hit or miss. Sometimes it is awesome, other days it is super slow. The slow days are increasingly frustrating when you are waiting a while for the table since they don’t take reservations. If we are on any sort of time restriction when we go, we always have to make sure there is a back-up plan since the wait can be horrendous and there is very little space to actually wait(the wait is a bit easier to stomach in the summer or if you are close to the bar). Anyways, definitely a delicious burger and I highly recommend it!

It’s been over a year since my first Blue Door experience and I can definitively say it’s my favorite restaurant for casual, gluttonous indulging! My bf and I have returned about once a month and have loved trying the rotating wing flavors and Blucy of the Month. We have had a few incidents where service was not great or apps and burgers came out together(I think mostly due to the constant crowds and abyss kitchen) and complained once or twice and things immediately improved. In the end, the food is so consistently awesome that we always leave satisfied– and with multiple to go containers from ordering too much!

Do I love this place? Hell Unilocal!I got the classic burger with buffalo tots, as well as the cheese curds… So good! My fiancé got the horsekick burger and regular tots. She said it was a perfect combination of the au jus, blue cheese and horse radish. Staff was awesome, atmosphere was great, sweet tunes. Highly recommended!

I think we all know what a good burger should be in Minneapolis. Blue Door should be one of the good ones. It’s their business right? Had a burger at St. Paul, years ago. When it moved to Minneapolis, tried it 3 times. I think we are done. I feel like a juicy Lucy(bluecy) by design should never ever be dry. But all three times. They were. It’s such a bummer. Dry. Over cooked. But not hot?! So strange. Just don’t understand. There are too many other places to go to for a mouthwatering, juicy burger.

I’ve started to actually say ‘no’ when friends suggest meeting here. Three things permanently discontinued the Blue Door for me: 1. It is so balls-out loud in here. I’m done having dinner somewhere I have to shout at the people next to me for an hour. 2. They discontinued one of the best things about Blue Door: the amazing quantity and variety of add-ons. They used to have an entire side menu of things you could add to your burger– totally strange, interesting, varied combos that created a unique and delicious meal, all for $ 6 or so. Now that’s gone, and in its place is a teeny set of choices, dull by comparison. 3. Guys… the veggie burger is just bad. It has the consistency and flavoring of lumpy mashed potatoes spread on a bun. So when you take out the ability to amp it up with add-ons, all you’ve got left is a mess that goes to pieces when you lift it up. I don’t want to have to chomp at pieces of my sandwich as they slip between my fingers like some kind of amphibian, man. I’m done! White flag!

I’ve had the Nook, Blue Door St. Paul, and many a burger around the twin cities, but no one else can evoke the kind of emotion(borderline tears of joy!) when my friends ask«Wanna go to Blue Door?» Its the kind of place where you come with three friends and order four burgers because«ohmygodddd does that one aound amazing! But I NEED to try this one. My personal fave: Cease and Desist. I think it’s a play on the Big Mac. Pastramilicious is delicious and the Longfellow burger might be able to create world peace. Did I mention you can add tater tots to your burger for just little bit extra too? Ahhhmazing. They always have good beer and play good music, too which is helpful when there’s a wait(and it’s worth waiting for, folks!). Go here, you’ll be glad you did!(And this is coming from a gung ho St. Paul girl)

I couldn’t imagine living in this neighborhood and not weighing 500 lbs. The smell wafting from the Blue Door Pub is my sort of heaven. It’s a burger joint. They offer a few other sandwiches and apps but if you’re not coming here for a burger, you’re in the wrong place. They offer quite a few juicy lucy variations and many are interesting in that you might not have though of those combos yourself. Last time I was here I tried the Jiffy Burger(PB, pepper jack, bacon). I didn’t like the combo of toppings but it was a great burger. Next time, I’d just go with something else. The fries are awesome and so are the pickles. It’s nice they offer fries as an add on. I think one side is enough for two people. All they have is beer and wine at the bar. It’s a shame they don’t have a full bar. I need some strong booze to cut through that much delicious fat. It’s a popular place so be prepared for a wait!

I waited a long time to finally get to Blue Door — we had tried twice to get into the St. Paul location but never had time for the long wait. It was just ok. We started with the Spam Bites which were mostly just cream cheese — not very much Spam at all. Pretty disappointing. The pickles were good though. I had the Blucy. I was pretty disappointed because the burger was pretty dry. The blue cheese was pretty overpowering(as it tends to be), and without the meat juice to cut it it was just too much. Husband had the Cease and Desist which he said was ok but not great. We’ve had better burgers else where(The Nook and 5 – 8 Club in Champlain! come to mind). The best part of my meal? Some of(what I’m guessing was) the Blackberry sauce was spilled on my burger* and it was pretty tasty. *Though, this is an issue in and of itself — why was I served a burger with someone else’s sauce spilled on it?! We live far away so doubtful we’ll be back again, especially for such a lackluster burger.

Stopped by my last night in Minneapolis for a quick dinner before my early morning flight back to NYC, because«there’s no other place you’ll be able to find a burger with cheese stuffed in it like a MF’er»(concisely quoted from my friend who happens to be a local) And yes, he’s right. I didn’t even know a Blewcy existed.(Am I spelling it right?) It was interesting, it was new, and it was exotic. I had to try it. From what I learned while waiting for a table, Blue Door did NOT invent the Juicy Lucy(that’s Matt’s Bar for ya), but it’s common opinion that Blue Door does an amazing take on the Juicy Lucy, a creation they call the Blucy(clever). I ordered the Longfellow Blucy, which was a burger stuffed with goat cheese and garlic, smothered with a blackberry sauce. That menu description really got to me, and gladly to say, it tastes as good as it sounds. I do not agree that the burger was«stuffed like a MF’er»; the cheese is there, but not so much that it just overwhelms you in a single bite. There were sections of my burger that were cheeseless, so those were sad moments where I chewed my patty and bun sullenly in silence. Who am I kidding, the patty is flavorful and juicy by itself. It was so juicy that I almost forgot there’s no vegetables in my burger(unfortunately for me, I need my lettuce and tomatoes in my burgers. I indeed noticed that Blucy’s are served with no veggies of any sort. If you’re on a diet or trying to eat healthy, Blue Door is not the place for you.) My friends ordered different Blucy’s, none of which I got to try, but they looked just as juicy, greasy, and delicious as mine. The prices for burgers was pretty reasonable($ 8 – 10) and sides are $ 2 – 3 extra depending on what you get. I loved how they offered fried green beans as a side, as I am not one to call a protein and carbohydrate-loaded dish a proper meal. The beans were lightly battered and still crisp while retaining turgor, impressive! The fries were also pretty good. In addition to the food, the atmosphere was welcoming. Luckily for us, this location is the bigger location, meaning faster service and less wait time. We happened to stop by on a Monday night, which also happens to be their very spirited Blingo Night, where you get to play 6 rounds for prizes like free rounds of drinks, totchos, and T-shirts. Everyone looked like they were having fun, meaning I did not have to hide my unsual penchant for playing bingo without being called intrinsically old. All in all, a good vibe with good food and good service. I would recommend that everyone try this place at least once, given that the amount of oil in each Blucy is not an issue. By the way, the location is in a residential looking neighborhood. It could be easy to miss if you weren’t watching out.

Blue door pub in Minne is in the Longfellow neighborhood which is 15 min from downtown. It is in a residential neighborhood and has a blue door. The food is fantastic. The picinic blucy which has cheese and pulled pork was magic– and the buffalo tots? OMG so good. Even the bleu cheese it came with was amazing. I went with a work group. We tried spam bites and latin kisses. The latin kisses are AMAZING! A must. This is a spacious location with art on the walls. They have kids menus and crayons. I understand why people can’t decide on who has the best juicy lucy. The answer is they all do and we all win.

Sigh. Matt’s was closed and Casper’s and Runyon’s Nook is in St. Paul so I settled for the Blue Door. I really wish I hadn’t. My one and only time to try a Juicy Lucy in MN turned into just a regular burger. Mine or my friend’s «juicy» had no melted cheese coming out of it and I was sorely disappointed. We tried the classic and the jiffy(peanut butter, bacon, pickle, jack cheese) — both were decent tasting burgers but with no cheese in sight. Jiffy sounds weird but it’s quite good. Anyways, if you are wanting to try the Juicy Lucy while in town, I would recommend looking elsewhere. You can tell by the pictures of Matt’s and the Nook — there are numerous pictures with cheese oozing out. In the Blue door Unilocal pictures, there are none too be seen. :( Other than the burgers, the tater tots are pretty average and the onion rings are thick cut and very heavily battered. Everything is BIG. Also, don’t even think about seating yourself at the bar. They seat people at the bar in the order you arrived. There should be a sign really, I don’t know how many times i heard them explain to people trying to sit at the bar.

My friends and I went to Blue Door’s Longfellow restaurant for a friend’s birthday dinner and were starving by the time we were seated! We came at 5pm anticipating it would be full and still waited about an hour to be seated. After that everything was roses and sunshine! I tried the Cease & Desist with deep fried green beans and really enjoyed the burger! I’ve had the Jiffy and at least one or two others and I think I will get this Big Mac style burger from now on. The juicy oozing cheese and special ‘Merica sauce, plus chopped pickles are SOGOOD! With the total per person including sides and drinks being around $ 20 I think this dinner was a great value and I loved my delicious burger!

I came here for my first ever Juicy Lucy and Cheese Curds. I ordered the Bacon Blucy($ 9) and cheese curds($ 8). The food was good, but I was hoping there would be more cheese in the Blucy. On the other hands, cheese curds was something new to me. It was like a lightly battered mozzarella cheese, which was good but not something I’d go crazy over. It was a good taste of Minnesota for me though.

The original Blue Door in St. Paul has been one of my favorite purveyors of stuffed burgers in the Cities, so it’s not surprising I think highly of its younger sibling in Longfellow. There are a lot of similarities between the two locations, but this spot isn’t without its unique charms. As expected, Blue Door makes a good Lucy and can deep fry anything with the best of them. Roughly half of their menu overlaps the mothership location’s, while the rest of the menu is unique to the Longfellow outpost(fortunately, the Bangkok Blucy exists at both spots). They have ever-changing burgers of the moment, rotating wing flavors and a new Totcho concoction every Monday(an orgy of tater tots, nacho toppings and whatever the hell they feel like putting on there each week). The beer selection is decidedly local, with about a dozen tap handles to choose from. While the Longfellow location offers a few more seats for asses to fill and a bit more breathing room than the St. Paul digs, it’s still quite popular and a wait can generally be expected. That said, it’s generally worth it, so just grab a pint or two, play one of the arcade games or just be antisocial and pretend to have important stuff to do on your phone so you can eventually shove some fried food in your fat face.
