My mom is in the Polonaise assisted living. Some things are OK, staff is good, some of the residents are friendly and welcoming but many are suffering from dementia. Apartments are nice. The price is competitive.
The activities are from kindergarten and grade school. Lame and boring. There isn’t a pleasant place to roam outside. only a sidewalk around the parking lot. There is a park nearby but you would have to travel out of the area of the facility, down the block, across a huge parking lot in the park and I don’t know how far to get to a walking trail or anything. If there even is one.
They do go on outings (mostly to a store) but the bus has room for only one wheel chair so first come first served.
The handicap access buttons for the entrance door break or don’t work properly more often than they work.
The worst thing is the food. bad taste, no choices, unhealthy. The legs of the table are in the middle so when my mom pulls up in her power-​chair she crashes into them spilling everones soup and drink. Imagine the stress of every time you go to eat crappy food, you are afraid of ruining the meal for everyone.
Hot dog OR macaroni and cheese for dinner. don’t like that? have a ham sandwich. If I didn’t take my mom to the grocery store and get her fruit and pre-​made salad she would starve to death. She has MS so she can’t use the kitchen, not even the microwave.
I spend a lot of time visiting places and finding the best care she could afford. This is a good place for care and safety, but the food, a small pool of possible friends and boredom has not freed me from the large amount of time it took to give her quality of life. The time we spend together should be for us, not running errands for basics. This has not helped my have more time for my friends, family and myself.
Now I’m looking for a place that is safe and has good food. wish me luck,

A very nice retirement community, conveniently located in the city on the South Side. They have a good variety of entertainment and social events scheduled here and the resident community seems friendly and active. The place is clean, the staff cheerful and well trained.
