BUTIT’S GERMAN! Complaining about fat in German food is like complaining about fat in bacon. What’s the point? As we wandered through the Farmer’s Market, I noticed the German pancakes being deep-fried at a rather low temperature, so I’m thinking«Boy, those things are going to be so greasy». My husband already knows the deal but he wants to try these potato pancakes anyway. We walk up and down the venue at least three times before she finally takes them out of the oil and prepares them with a side of beet syrup,(the traditional way to serve them). You can taste every bit of the fat in these pancakes but they actually had a very nice flavor. They were simply prepared according to traditional German custom so I definitely respect this tradition. The syrup was thick and rich but not overly sweet, I could actually imagine pairing it with regular pancakes. We were actually surprised that it had such a nice flavor without being overly sweet. This little lady,(straight from Germany, accent and all), was such a delight. We enjoyed the small talk as she prepared the dish. While we would stop by for the small talk, I think that we would pass on the pancakes in favor of their other offerings. They also offered spatzle, apple strudel, red cabbage, bratwurst and potato salad. If you like traditional German foods, you now have a new option.
