So this is the sister restaurant to the Wild Rose at the district in South Jordan. I describe their restaurants as uppity with average food. The prices for the food they offer is a little of kilter. I went with the special which was a Kobe beef steak. The steak was okay… It was pretty tender but the flavor was just alright. I believe the steak was around $ 50. If I compare that to a steak at Ruth’s Chris for $ 50, there is actually no comparison. My wife got the New York strip and it was surprisingly very chewy… A pretty awful steak to be honest. The sides were okay. Nothing that crazy original and the flavors were again average. If I go to a restaurant and pay for a $ 50 steak. I want something magical. Beef magic. This unfortunately was not that. I don’t think the food justifies the price. Sorry guys.

Just 2 stars? Well, not much atmosphere and top end pricing for at best mid range food. I too am surprised by the number of five star reviews on Unilocal for H&V, and can only conclude that a lot of people here haven’t eaten at a decent steak house. The meat they serve may well be sourced from wonderful farms, etc, but the resulting meals are nothing to write home about, especially disappointing given how enjoyable Tiburon is. Our very friendly waitress(plus one star) warned my wife not to order her Kobe steak cooked any less than medium«to ensure that the marbling was fully cooked to release all the flavor». I ordered their ribeye cooked medium rare, with the Wellington add-on. Well my wife’s Kobe steak came out blood-rare while my ribeye was cooked medium, and the Wellington add-on, well they just forgot about that — Those two blunders plus their premium pricing cost H&V two stars straight away. The next star I deducted was for the fact that steak aside, virtually everything they serve is cooked with cheese. Here my biases are showing(full disclosure, I don’t like cheese), but I’ve never known a good steak house serve side dishes(Mac & Cheese aside) that were all prepared that way. If the chef thinks that’s great cuisine he’s in the wrong business, but more likely is just lazy. This evening’s vegetables, beans and carrots that at my request weren’t cooked in cheese, were dreadfully bland, basically just steamed, served dry with no seasoning. And the three sauces that accompanied the entrees? I’m sorry, they tasted store bought — minus another star. Look, most steakhouses follow pretty much the same formula. What separates the great steakhouses from the not-so-great ones is the quality of the ingredients and the care and attention in the preparation and service. Sounds easy but it really isn’t. I could go on(did I mention the weirdly limited wine list, given the restaurant’s name?), but you get the idea. H&V is offering Outback steaks at downtown prices. If you want a great steak at $$$$ prices, head downtown to Ruth’s Chris or Spencer’s, etc.

My expectation was a on the high side knowing the group behind Tiburon and Epic were linked to this restaurant. They opened up among the shops outside of the Century 13 theatre in Midvale. Parking varies on the movie showing that night. Worst case would be the parking garage, otherwise there should be parking near the front. They have a reservation system through OpenTable, so it was easy to make one without any human contacts. The décor here had a dimmer trendy vibe with strange art pieces all over the place. I got the Top Flap in Wellington style with a side of funeral potato. The wellington style actually meant a bread pouch of mushroom mixes places on top of your steak. The one I got was wet and soggy, while other pictures posted had a dried pastry, so I probably got a bad one that night. The steak was ok, not the best kobe meat I have eaten. I got funeral potato and broccoli for side. Funeral potato was a nice fitting unique side for Utah, and tasted good too. Broccoli was a bit odd, and I did not expect a fine dining place would put a huge uncut stick on the plate. Other on the table got some Australian Lamb Chop and Tenderloin, and both were decent. They have a variety of sorbet for dessert, which was actually quite cool. I got the blueberry flavor and others got the raspberry and lemonade, both looked about the same in terms of color, but the flavors were different. Hoof & Vine was a bit overhyped, and perhaps my initiate expectation was too high? The prices here is definitely on the upscale end, whether I did not think I received the dish at that level comparing with steakhouses that charges similar prices. Service was decent that night. It’s a toss-up on whether I come back again.

They have great steak. I love the beef tenderloin. Their funeral potatoes aren’t the greatest so maybe ask for a different side or go with traditional mashed potatoes. They have a good house salad and yummy Apple peach crisp dessert. They don’t call it that but they will get the point if you ask for it. The restaurant feels very modern with clean lines. It doesn’t have much warmth which I quite like in a steakhouse(cough, cough… carvers). We’ve been here a few times and the steak is what brings us back.

After finding out that this place has a relation to Tiburon we had to try it out. Service was great, menu was pretty pricey for what you get. The goat cheese and tomatoes was superb, perfectly ripened tomatoes with balsamic vinegar dressing. Both salads had great flavor with fresh greens. The weird part was on my beef wellington where instead of cooking the steak in the middle they put the puff pastry on the side and filled it with mushrooms. I think we will come back and stick to what is good and stay away from the oddball items.

We’ve been here several times and ALWAYS walk away happy. It’s conveniently located across from the Century 16 and will often have promotions for 2 for 1 entrees if you’re going to the movies after dinner. We haven’t tried anything we didn’t love but we absolutely CRAVE the tenderloin Wellington style and the salmon. Yum!!! Go and eat here! The only reason I withheld the 5th star is I feel like they could do better with the seating. The tables and chairs have this cheap look/feel to them that always reminds me they’re located in a strip mall. They need to upgrade with more booths.
