I want to give this place more stars. I really do .If it was on architectural points it’s a five. And the art is great. But then there is the staff. Who can’t say hello. And clearly were age discriminating on who got the hello. Yes only cool 20 somethings buy prints so why say hello to any other potential buyers. Never acknowledge they are inside your gallery when they could be else where. They are looking at your work and then looking again. At the cool wonka print. Or the Bronson print. Or the VanGoh print. And prices that say yes I’ll take all 3 of these tonight. But that never happened. Why? Ask the staff. if you can find them. And for the record I was there long enough and NO they weren’t that busy. Well maybe for the wrong crowd.

What a bright spot for Michigan City. The downtown area once known as Franklin Square was a place full of life but over the years has trickled down to become the atypical boarded up old downtown. Maybe a hobby store, diner, plenty of banks and a costume shop — has now become a lively little stop in MC. Walnut Ink Gallery has set the precedent on how to do it right. The gallery’s owners spared no expense to fix up this little storefront. Beautiful refurbished hardwood floors and an old tin stamped ceiling. The collections at the gallery change out here and there and offer a little bit of something for every taste. When a collection opens or closes they invite the community to come in, take a look around, have a spirit and get to know some of the artists. Also, they have teamed with other galleries, cafes, etc in the area to start the area’s first Fridays — an opportunity to network and get to know other shops without feeling odd walking into a place on your own. I look forward to watching Walnut Ink continue to blossom.

A Gallery With A Passion For Art: Walnut Ink is one of the top galleries in the Midwest. I believe it is the nicest gallery between Chicago and New York. If you haven’t been to there, you owe it to yourself to check out the next show. Walnut Ink opened in the Summer of 2010 and has had two very successful shows. The first contained works of some of the best and most well-known artists from the Chicago art scene, including internationally renowned artist Lora Fosberg. The second show featured works on paper and showcased a broad selection of works from several artists, most notably Ladislav Hanka. Hanka’s works have found homes in museums, institutions, and private collections all over the world. Many other artists were featured in both shows. This gave a unique opportunity to see works that would seldom, if ever, be seen together. Walnut Ink has made a bold statement in the art world. It not only put Michigan City on the map, it is playing an integral part in defining the southern and western Lake Michigan shore art scene for years to come.
