Art Miami/Context set up shop in Wynward for 2015, and offered an event as equally organized as Art Basel/Design Miami. Art is very subjective, depending on your tastes of course, but I’d say that this year’s Context was one of the highlights of the whole week. Particular focus was given to contemporary Korean artists(see ) to preview the international show in South Korea for early 2016. Art Miami, on the other hand, offered a mixed bag, in terms of quality and daring. However, access to the vibrant street life and music of nearby Wynward offered additional exploration for the day. Big kudos for a well run event.

Miami Art was a great event to kick off Art Basel with! Although not located in Wynwood, Midtown area is perfect for this venue. The venue itself was spacious enough to provide room for art lovers to walk around, take pictures, and gather amongst each other in conversation. Each artist displayed pieces of art in provided sections. There was a café in the middle for VIP, and drink spots purchase alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.

I tend to enjoy this more than a the cattle call at the convention center. Full disclosure: we got free passes, but I am sharing my honest review. There were some great Hans Hofmanns, but some gallerists decided to take mr. Brainwash seriously for some reason? Joke’s on you, I guess. It’s a lot less crowded here too and a little cheaper but not by much.

With all of the good art fairs during Basel Miami Art week, Art Miami in past years either lacked in the wow department or I was overloaded with art viewings to appreciate it. When my friend retrieved a press pass, I only had a mild irritation with the idea of stepping inside. For me, as an artist and a non collector, the art fairs provide me with inspiration despite the essential capitalistic nature of the event. I can network and see what’s selling, who’s selling, see what’s considered edgey in the commercial scene and, in some cases, view art that would otherwise be in national ranked art museums or Billionaire collectors houses. The latter element has always been exclusive to the main fair, Art Basel at the convention center, showing classic pop art Warhols next to impressionistic Chagals, next to whimsically pornographic Paul McCarthy contemporary sculptures. 2015, Art Miami suprised me with its bling. Seeing it the first opening day, perhaps I got to see some of the best stuff before it sold. The day before the public viewing, collectors snatch up many things in the actual first viewing that never make it to public view. Art Miami made me happy with its representation of contemporary street art that is hot in the museums now — Basquait, KAWS, Bansky and Kenny Scharf. There was a decent representation of other museum promoted artists, with a nod to classic modern artists like Chagal, and plenty of younger contemporary artists like Dylan Lynch. There still might be what I consider to be «decorative» art that is similiar to what you find in an arts and craft shop, and can support itself on being gimmicky. At $ 35 it’s a big investment if you don’t have a pass, and if I had to choose Id pick Basel Miami at the convention center, but still Art Miami puts on a decent show. Café Courtyard includes entry into«Context» which features all International galleries.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Basel, that is. The best collection of artwork is in the Art Miami/Context tents, in my opinion. Located in Midtown, there is ample street parking or convenient garages nearby. Given its size, I will usually frequent this exhibit atleast twice during the week and on VIP preview night, granted the Basel Gods grace me with an invitation. Weekday hours are only till 8 pm so I would recommend going during the weekend daytime. Great stuff so far this year, will be returning. :) Happy Baseling!

Great Art Basel tents here for the week. One could spend an entire afternoon just walking these tents and looking at the Art — there’s so much I didn’t even get to see everything in there. The no photos policy — widely ignored and unenforceable — is rigidly arcane but otherwise this is one of my go-to places every year for Basel. Keep this here instead amid a Super Walmart.

Amazing year in and year out. One of the standout events going on during Art Basel. Modern art is showcased here and it is really breathtaking. A definite must during Art Basel.

An annual grab bag of artworks of varying quality and interest to my eye, Art Miami is the show I tend to hit every year during Basel weekend. While certainly large in area and scope, I wasn’t so impressed by the 2014 showing. However, I read an article about the whole Basel weekend that helps put this year’s lackluster art in perspective for me. The overriding purpose of Basel, Art Miami, Scope, Red Dot, etc, is to SELLART. As such, the market doesn’t really care what people like me think of the art on offer. It’s an art bazaar, not a museum — any indication of quality inherent in the artworks for sale is purely tangential. There is no guarantee of quality. The buyers for these pieces are just as likely to be purchasing art for the lobby of some giant corporate headquarters, as they would for the purpose of lovingly curating a personal collection. In short, some years are better than others — go in with an open mind zero and comfortable walking shoes, and you’ll be fine. Plan to spend a fair bit of time walking around the tents — including the Context fair that is affiliated with Art Miami, this whole thing comprised 4 tents in 2014.

Imagine getting on a plane, like the ones from 80’s Saturday morning cartoons that could land and take off anywhere, but set in modern reality. You pass the TSA, I mean private security who check your pass. But once you get on that flight, you can fly all over the world — from New York to Beijing and a stop in Berlin — and check out each city’s best art galleries. Your flight is called Art Miami! One of the Wynwood-based Art Basel satellite fairs, Art Miami showed me some of the more edgier art outside of the local«hole in the wall» galleries. Both tasteful and edgy nudes(girls that emerge from a banana), disembodied Cold War-era dictator heads(even my old buddy Fidel), hypnotic digital art I’ve seen at Art Miami. I’ve also had the opportunity to talk to some of the artists and attend the lectures that are part of the admission. They also have both general admission and VIP food stands, and staffing is pretty quick in both. The prosecco is great while admiring the art. Art Miami is one flight which should never stop!

3 huge tents, so much space, so much art, mind is blown on the volume of truly amazing talent there is. parking a biatch, prepare for a decently packed place, wear comfy shoes and a bottle of h20. enjoy walking around and even stop for a quick free bit of gelato in the courtyard. I heart art basel and the face he universal love for art it makes us unite for one week a year.

Big three-tent exhibit featuring contemporary art from all over the world as part of Art Basel. Great mix of not only photography, paintings and installations, but also a very diverse crowd. It seems Art Basel is able to unite the urban hip hop crowd, tattoed and pierced punk rockers, baby boomers. models, South Beach glitterati and Euro-fashionistas all in one place. I probably missed a few. Parking is sparse and expensive. Also, don’t bother buying VIP passes, the only thing those get you is cheap champagne and beer. All other drinks you have to pay for. Worth a visit.
