Going to a travel clinic I expected a doctor to be at least present on site if questions/issues arise. We were serviced by a nurse, which I guess in itself is ok, but there was no doctor available. Our dedicated nurse did not have basic information about the diseases, their treatment, prevalence, rates of infections etc. She pulled out a print out with recommended vaccines for the country we were going to and read the description on the paper. She had a very basic understanding of how vaccines work and did not fully comprehend the difference between a inactive vaccine and one with a live virus. I’ve spent my appointment reading CDC’s website and pamphlets provided by vaccine manufacturers to make sure it’s appropriate, effective and with low enough side effects. What a waste of time the consultation was! We did get our vaccine and prescription for malaria. The registration system worked, nurse was nice and really tried to be helpful — just did not have the knowledge. We ultimately got what we needed to get.
