I work at the medical school and was excited when Gilbert’s opened on campus, having enjoyed cakes and other goodies from Gilbert’s while growing up in Miami. I am Cuban and Spanish; I AM your target population. My first few experiences were not positive. In a nutshell… very high prices– tiny portions– and very disorganized service(i.e., 3 people trying to help you at once as other reviewers mentioned). I figured the business was new and was working out the kinks, and stayed away for a while hoping things would improve. Unfortunately, they have not. I ordered a ‘small’ cortado and an «olla de garbanzos y chorizo» from the tapas menu for lunch, for a total of $ 7.21. I was asked whether I wanted sugar in my cortado and I said«muy poquita»(very little). I was given one of the sweetest cortados I have ever tried(not the first time this happens here). The garbanzos were a huge disappointment. First, the serving was very small(yes, even for something referred to as ‘tapas’). The garbanzos were scarce, they were swimming in large amounts of oil, and they were extremely salty. I honestly feel sick to my stomach after having eaten this. I really really wanted to like this Gilbert’s and to be able to support this local business I’ve known for so many years, but both quality and value are lacking, so there isn’t much of an incentive for me to come back given the wealth of options around our Jackson/UM community now. Additionally, I witnessed a non-Spanish speaking co-worker having a very hard time having her order understood by a non-English speaking employee. To make it worse, the employee actually gave the customer a negative attitude for not speaking Spanish! It was so disheartening to see this. Not a good experience.

I was happy to know Gilberts bakery was coming to the Jackson location BUTTTT!!! omg it has to do something with their fridge because wow that fridge taste is powerful. One of our Doctors always brings us something from there like pastelitos but one bit is enough to taste that fridge and it stays in your mouth if you don’t find something to wash your mouth with. Also their Cuban sandwich has that taste and their little red velvet cakes i guess just anything that is stored in their cooling box or fridge. You must be thinking then why keep eating it well because i’m trying to give them the benefit of the doubt but whatever it is they have to do something about it i don’t understand why people keep buying from them. YUCK!!!

This place is beyond terrible. The food is terrible, and the prices are out of hand. The only reason I am giving 1 star is because the only good thing is their coffee, but be prepared to get ripped off. The food is premade and gross. The customer service is terrible, and they are consistent with getting things wrong. You can easily step right next door for a bigger cup of coffee and a fresh breakfast made to order. I have given this place several chances since it was opened, but it has disappointed me and my co-workers every time.

The food always bad. I bought a cachito and it barely had cheese. Then I’ve been buying pasteles and at times, the filling was cold. Other times, I’ve bought papa rellena and it was pretty nasty as well. I like the area and the spot, it is nicely decorated and pretty central within the health district. However, if you can avoid it and go somewhere else, then do.

My coworker and I wanted to try something new for lunch, so we ventured out and found GIlbert’s. When you walk in, there are pre-made sandwiches and salads in the cooler. My first thought was that those were specifically for people who wanted a grab-n-go type of deal. I assumed I could ask for a sandwich to be custom made for me. Sadly, I assumed wrong. All you can order is in that cooler. There are WAY too many servers for them to just grab the premade stuff to hand to the cashier. Too many trying to answer the same person’s question all at once. Disappointingly, I settled on the tuna sandwich, which was not even good. It was dry because I couldn’t even ask for mayo or cheese or anything else. I requested it to be warmed up, but I guess they warmed it with the paper, so the bottom of my sandwich stuck to the paper. Blech. The desserts looked so cute and tempting that I ordered a tiramisu mini parfait. Another strike there, since it tasted like it was made with alcohol and not coffee. Nowhere was that stated. To top it all off, prices are expensive! Normally, I’m okay paying a high price if the quality is there to back it up. That is DEFINITELYNOT the case here. For sure, I will not be returning.

Every single time they get my order wrong, 3 people helping you at the same time, its not logical. They are so expensive and their food is not even good. The only thing they have going are the pastries, just make sure you check the order before you leave or you will be disappointed. Again the food and coffee are so expensive for meh quality. This place will not stay open for long. Just went to again and again disappointed. The pastries were not flaky and they were really bad. The only thing they had going was the pastries… never again.

I’ve gone a few times since they opened and enjoyed it all but once. The convenient location at the base of dominion towers just next to the medical campus brought me in, while the well-done atmosphere and nice staff brought me back. The café con leche, cortaditos, tortilla española, and pastelitos, are all well done and fairly priced, but the croquetas are mushy and $ 1 each! I would recommend staying away from the tuna sandwiches in the deli case, as the last one I had was dried out and clearly over a day old.

This location just recently opened and It’s located by Jackson Memorial Hospital. It’s another great choice for lunch if you want to switch it up with what’s next door. My co-workers wanted to pick up lunch here, and I came along since I have never tried their other locations. The place has sit-in and you can even eat out front. The staff is nice and accommodating and the food looks good. They have sandwiches, quiches etc. I had a Chicken César wrap and it was creamy and delicious. The portion was good and had big chunks of chicken in it. It made me happy. :) I had already ordered it and as they boxed it, I noticed this amazing looking tuna sandwich that they have. I will definitely be back to try it.

New bakery/coffee shop in the Civic Center area great for the local hospital workers to relax for a break before they go back to saving lives. But seriously its got great pastries and sandwiches as well as different coffee options. It’s a bit pricey but all the food is made fresh daily and the service is pretty quick.
