Terrible!!! The place is on its last legs! On a Monday night and they were out of more things than not. Including saki! In the whole restaurant they had 3 small bottles. Um. Saki doesn’t go bad. And it’s where a restaurant makes most of its profits. Hard to imagine why they had practically none, unless they don’t have the $$ to order it. Our server did tell us its been so slow that why there wasn’t any ordered. Anywho! We were a group of 9. There were soooooo many things that were wrong I don’t have the energy to explain. From how the food tasted(bland and OVERPRICED) to be over charged for the saki we did order. I was part of the party that decided we didn’t want to risk eating more that miso and shishito peppers from a dodgey sushi joint. We went to an awesome little spot named otentic… It was AMAZING and sooooooo affordable. RUNFROMTHISPLACE!

This place was empty and seems like its on its way out but our sushi was fresh and very tasty. Good service, good wine, highly recommend the lobster roll and the crispy hamachi noodle appetizer! Yum

Ok, so this is my first Unilocal review! Woohoo. I just had to review this place, it was that good. I used my group on coupon that I have been trying to use forever. The location of this place is at the south end of South Beach, away from all the traffic. Could be a good thing for some as parking was a breeze. We went on a Tuesday night right before closing so the waitress was attentive and friendly. We ordered the crab cake for appetizer. It was absolutely the best crab cake I ever had, no lie. Real lump crab meat, no flour filling, crunch, well presented. Ordered two main dishes, 1– Black miso cod– also very good. The texture of the fish is similar to sea bass. Grilled with a light miso and eel sauce, topped with fried parsnip strips. Now to the sushi, I ordered the sashimi, sushi, ceviche and roll combo. Lots of food and worth its regular price of $ 33. The fish was melt in your mouth smooth and extremely fresh. I’ve been to some of the best sushi restaurants in Miami, but this place edges out slightly due to the freshness. There was 4 pieces sashimi and 3 sushi pieces. The 2 ceviches was quite good as well; salmon and hamachi both marinated in citrus but not overpowering. The roll was my least favorite as there was a strong sesame oil seasoning in the tuna. Definitely worth going there again, even without the group on deal.

Shoji recently re-opened under new management. Out of 10 or so white wines on the list, they only had 2 in stock; the menus are now contained in dirty plastic sleeves, and the manager offers nothing but excuses. Simply stay away. There are at least 5 far superior options in South Beach.

We went to eat here before heading to the movies. We used a dinner for 2 from Groupon. We tried to get a reservation 2 weeks ago on a Saturday but they told us they were fully booked until Aug 30th. I called back 2 days later and the hostess told me they have spaces starting from Aug 20. Booking reservations was little confusing :( On to food. We started w/jumbo lump crab cake w/kimchee sauce: crunchy breaded shell stuffed w/jumbo, melt in your mouth crab cake… mighty good! Highly recommended to try for app. Main course, we had 4 kinds of rolls: 1) Shoji special: tempura Maine lobster, avocado, shishito, cilantro, masago, kimchee 2) Spicy tuna tempura: avocado, sprouts, spicy mayo, eel sauce 3) Spider: tempura soft shell crab, masago, avocado, sprouts 4) Caribbean: tempura conch, avocado, mango, asparagus, house made hot sauce All were delicious. My favorites… Spicy Tuna Tempura and Shoji Special. The only disappointing part is the portion of each roll. I go to several Sushi places every month and unlike Sushi Sake(as an example), the portions we got served at Shoji were quite smaller. An order of a «roll» from other reputable Sushi restaurants I have eaten were longer and sliced to 8 thick pieces. So I somewhat agree with reviewers about the higher pricing of their menu. Overall, we loved the ambiance of the restaurant. The service of both Manager & server. A+ Despite the portions, we will definitely be back for more cause the food was absolutely delicious!

Was visiting from Illinois and had just gone fishing with a friend. These guys were able to prepare the Tuna for us as scrumptious Ceviche, Sashimi, and Tartare(and a few more) dishes in an amazingly fast time. Both on the phone and in the restaurant the hostess and the owner took amazing care with us, even sitting down to grab a bite with us(we had too much to finish) and giving us a free drink. The ambiance is perfect for a date or a casual night out with friends and all the staff, from the waiters /waitresses to the chefs in back are friendly and warm. Prices are very fair and I would recommend with confidence. Waiting for them to come to Chicago.

Overpriced and mediocre although service was good. We ordered 2 rolls and 2 cheap glasses of wine per person, as well as one dessert and ended up with a $ 98 bill, gratuity not included. That’s what I’d expect to pay at Zuma. The rolls we had were not bad but also not memorable. I’ve had the same rolls for $ 6 at other places, rather than $ 10– $ 18. I did like that they had two vegetarian rolls on the menu. Also loved the fried cheesecake but again, at $ 11.00 totally overpriced when I can get it at Maiko for $ 4.50. My guess is they will be closed within a year unless they change the menu prices.

Shoji Sushi is one of those places where you gladly pay a little more(really, not much) for a top notch dining experience. The dining room is decorated simply, contemporary elegant, and the low lighting is perfect for a relaxing meal. They have my favorite style of seating: combination of booth AND chairs. If you like the booth, sit on that side. If you prefer chairs, sit on the other. Or if your party is split, that works too! I know it sounds petty, but it’s the small pleasures that make the dining experience. The service was excellent. Unbelievable, even! I’ll get to that in a second. First, let’s talk about the food. We shared the hamachi ceviche, and three rolls: erika’s roll, hamachi jalapeño, and spicy tuna. Everything was delicious and so fresh you could almost hear the ocean waves as you chewed. I love that erika’s roll and hamachi jalapeño both contained cilantro. I’ve never seen it used in sushi before but man, do the flavors work. The rolls were huge and very filling. We couldn’t finish all of them, which is out of character for me. As the evening progressed, I noticed there was a small bug on our table. FAIL, I know, but the door had been open most of the night and it was understandable that a bug could have sneaked in past the hostess. We promptly squash it(sorry, bug), but decided not to say anything to management because nobody was at fault here. Just one of those random, unavoidable things. Before we even had a chance to ask for the bill, one of the managers came over to ask about the bug incident. I was shocked! How did he know? Apparently, the bartender noticed what had happened and advised management. The gentleman apologized and told us our meal would be comped. He didn’t ask questions, he didn’t OFFER to comp it, he just did. Boom. I was floored by the attention to detail and the generous gesture. Never had I experienced such treatment. We didn’t even have to say a word! Shoji Sushi, even though I can’t pronounce your name to save my life, you guys are doing things right. Delivering top notch, exciting food at a reasonable price, maintaining the highest possible level of customer service. Arigato!

I’m usually very picky when it comes to my sushi. My friend had told me about this place and after the comedy club we were craving sushi like mad men. It was late Saturday night and we were expecting it to be very busy. Luckily the place wasn’t. The atmosphere was very nice and the service was excellent. On to food. We ordered drinks, my friend had a lycheetini(which was phenomenal) and I had a Kirin beer(not to shabby). For appetizer we had the fried calamari, which to my taste had to be the best I’ve had so far. For sushi we got at least 4 rolls(forgot their names), but I have to say these were the best i’ve had. For dessert we had tempura cheese cake with ice cream. It was AWESOME! This place is awesome and I will be coming back here next time i’m around the area. Try this place out. You won’t regret it.

Everyone talks about the sushi. Blah Blah Blah :) I like to come here for the english cream, black cherry with chocolate fondue dessert. Try to make sure you get a small bite of the cherry with the cream and chocolate all at the same time. Oh and don’t even think about sharing this. Just order one for yourself. Yes, I do like their rolls and sushi options but there’s other reviews for that ;)

I just came back from eating at Shoji Sushi and I must say that it was a pleasant surprise! I was part of a party of six and for appetizers we had the tuna tataki, spicy rock shrimp tempura and jumbo lump crab cake to share. I must say that I simply adored the spicy rock shrimp tempura! It was the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. I highly recommend it. For entrees, my party had the chilean sea bass, sushi(3 orders) and udon noodles. The waiter recommended that the small serving of the udon noodles be ordered instead of the large since the small was quite hefty. Needless to say, the small was the perfect size(maybe even a little too filling). The sushi and sashimi were perfectly fresh and delicious as well. For desert we had the chocolate cake, crème brûlée and cheescake. All were delicious and perfect ways to end the wonderful meal! In addition to the meal, we had ordered a Sofia sparkling wine that was simply divine! Also highly recommended(and decently priced). The overall bill for all of these plates was $ 440. The tip(that was included) made the bill $ 500. A little pricey(it’s South Beach), but Shoji Sushi is definitely one of the better sushi establishments that DO deliver in the South Beach area in terms of food and excellent service(it was raining when we left and they personally used an umbrella to walk us to our car).

Coming pretty late to the game rating Shoji after my meal there. My wife and I ate there after getting engaged during the spring of 2007. I still remember this meal. Probably the best sushi I’ve ever had the pleasure to eat. In fact, I’m writing this Unilocal review after just visiting a high class sushi bar that I wasn’t impressed with… the bar has just been set too high at this point. The fish in the sushi was incredibly fresh and the combinations were incredible. Thinking about planning a trip back to South Beach just to visit… but maybe I’ll wait until the start of the NBA season…

I am NEVER the person to rain on everyone else’s food parade but I just can’t agree. Best sushi in town? Certainly not in my opinion. Maybe it was a bad night but the baked dynamite roll I had was flat out burnt and tasted like a fireplace. A crunchy tuna roll and JB roll were just OK — but for these prices I prefer Doraku, Maiko and even Sushi Rock any day. They did have my favorite wine, Conundrum, so I’ll give them that but can’t say I’d go back. Sorry Shoji Lovers…

When ordering sushi with friends, we always split up the ordering duties, each of us picking out a roll. No repeats. We each have to pick out something different. Per usual, I picked the worst one, but it wasn’t actually half bad; the truth, though, is that I can’t even tell you what we got, save for one roll… the citrus salmon roll. The best sushi roll I have ever consumed. The fish in this roll was immaculate. The fresh salmon — not a local ingredient, I realize — was wonderfully firm. Cut perfectly, with no jagged edges, not a grain of rice dislodged, it had an unbelievably pleasing texture. Sometimes raw fish can be a little too warm and, thus, grainy. This salmon’s texture made me think I’d never cook the fish again. Accompanying the salmon and rice was the most tasty of avocados. The kind that tastes like an amalgam of earth, fruit and butter(just go with me on that). Often, avocado in a sushi roll is just a welcome filler. This time it was a key ingredient. A nice richness begging for acid. There was masago(capelin roe — fish eggs, in other words), kombu, and yuzu chili paste in these rolls, as well, but cutting through it all was the crisp, clean, heavenly citrus — a combination from lemon zest and a shisu leaf, beautifully displayed beneath the translucent rice paper wrapper. It was such a delicious, surprising flavor profile, our eyes bulged when we each took in our first bite. Quickly, politeness went out the window and we went on the offensive, snatching up the rest of the citrus salmon in the blink of an eye. You’d have thought the rest of the rolls were filled with poison the way they were neglected from then, on. As quick as the citrus salmon was gone, another platter arrived, with an obligatory accompaniment whose name I don’t even care to remember. Of the eight additional pieces, my companions each had one. I put my athletic eating abilities on display and took the rest down myself. I was happy. We were all thrilled. We needed dessert, too. And what better way could one possibly follow up the best sushi roll ever but than with the best dessert on earth? Shoji and Nemo are conjoined restaurants and we were fortunate that they also share their donuts! But this time, it was a smaller portion of donuts, accompanied with a wildly fantastic crème brûlée. This is a truly great crème brûlée, served in a shallow, wide dish maximizing surface area, read: maximizing blow torch exposure. So the caramelized sugar shell on the top of the brulee is maxed out. Simply incredible. A luscious ginger sorbet was there to cleanse the palette, as they say. I avoided it so as to keep the tasty of sugary, salty donuts present in my senses of taste and smell for the maximum amount of time. We left Shoji positively intoxicated. Good friends, good conversation, delicious sushi and desserts. My head was spinning with happiness.

A Friday night, non-reservation experience for us. We elected to sit at the bar-front since we were in no rush and arrived unannounced. I think we did good. Presentations were amazingly picturesque. We were well-served; our waiter checked in with us regularly and kept our glasses full. We had the opportunity to speak with the Chef and his staff for answers to our questions regarding menu items. Fantastic. Prices were very reasonable — our tab for two was just under $ 100 including tip and drinks. MINUS one star for the family seated nearby who’s toddler was noisier than all the other patron tables! Shame on the parents who were obviously non-attentive.

«Eek! Methinks not» is pretty much the only way to describe this experience. After coughing up $ 20 for valet parking we crossed the street to Shoji. We were greeted by a hostess in chancletas and a leopard print bra that peaked out of her sweatshirt. Our waitress looked like Tonya(Dana’s girlfriend from the Lword’s season one). She was rude and very scary, she answered back and snapped at us I was horrified. «Could we switch to a table under the heater?» «Huh? oh I don’t care» WHAT??? We ordered the passionfruit martini and two mango martinis. We also ordered a disgusting basket of over-salted calamari dripping in grease and tartar sauce. For dinner, we had sunday morning and the Spicy lobster. The passionfruit martini was supposed to be a lavish combination of fruit purée and fantastic ingredients, this would be true– if you live on another planet. My $ 15 martini was actually store-bought passionfruit juice with vodka. When our rolls arrived we weren’t even half-way done with our calamari(not that we wanted to finish it). The moment I placed that lobster roll in my mouth I knew we had gotten ripped off. The lobster was dry and resembled imitation crab more than anything. I quickly sent the lobster roll back and asked for a sunday roll as well. The roll was okay, nothing fantastic but I was already discouraged. The red onions in the sunday morning roll were not evenly cut so I got a giant chunk of onion. The spicy mayo was more of a spicy peanut sauce. Basically, we paid $ 140(my gf and I paid $ 85, our friend paid $ 35, + $ 20 valet) for sushi-maki quality food. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy.

I had ordered the Ceviche/Sushi/Sashime plate, in an effort to sample all that Shoji’s menu offers. The Salmon Ceviche was cool, fresh, and mixed with cilantro, red onions, cucumbers and a light dressing, topped with large fish roe, meshing a fusion of intricate Japanese & Latin American flavors. I was very impressed. The White Fish Ceviche was tossed with Red, Yellow and Green Bell Peppers, ad topped with small fish roe… Also tasty, but I enjoyed the Salmon Ceviche the most. The Tuna Roll and Sashimi were also clean and great quality sushi. I enjoyed the artistic touch of the sashimi, displaying fish of each dish to the side, as to resemble a painter’s palate. Very clever!

Shoji Sushi has very good sushi in a nice, off the beaten path location, along with a lovely outdoor patio that shares space with the Mercury Hotel. The indoor space at Shoji Sushi is spacious but also intimate, and there’s a four-seat bar if you plan to only imbibe or order small plates. The mojito here is fantastic — highly recommended! — as is the desert(especially the chocolate pudding cake, which is more like a chocolate soufflé). The sushi is fresh, well presented, and generously sized. One of my favorite rolls was the hamachi jalapeo roll and the eel(unagi) here is buttery, rich, and fantastic. There are also many varieties of tiradito(basically a type of tartare – very thinly sliced raw fish, usually plated with some type of reduction or very light dressing). Service isn’t the fastest, but this is South Beach, and that’s par for the course. Enjoy your table, your company, and order another drink. Shoji Sushi is one of the better sushi restaurants in SoBe that’s not Nobu(or outrageously priced like Nobu).
