This restaurant is tucked away in a neighborhood by the lake. We were greeted right away and had polite and prompt service. We started off with thin, crunchy and well seasoned onion rings which were consumed all too quickly. We ordered only sandwiches because the entrees were very pricey, and we didn’t feel like spending so much money. Well we had by far the best Mufaletta in town! The shrimp Po-boy and Chicken Parm were also delicious! We will definitely go back and splurge on their specials next time. I would try it if you are up for the New Orleans/Italian fare, want a nice neighborhood joint and want a family friendly place.

Worst server ever. Took forever to get our drinks. She made it seem like it was a hassle for her to give us refills, and the food took a bit longer than it should have. She had such an attitude withe everyone at the table. She was busy, but that is no excuse for being so rude. I admit the food is great, but had such a bad experience with the server, I won’t be going back.

Stuffed bell peppers and mashed potatoes!!! My mom claimed that the bell peppers here tasted very close the my Maw Maw’s who passed away in ’97. She was right! They were delicious. Stuffed with crab and crawfish, it took all my strength to not eat the second bellpepper.(I ate it 2⁄3 hours later). It helped that I inhaled ALL the mashed potatoes. if o had eaten that second bell pepper, I wouldn’t have been able to get up out of the chair. The other side was the creamed spinach. I’m sure it was ok — both my mom and brother liked it. However, I couldn’t get past the visual of a huge chunk of sour cream. Employees were ok. It didn’t matter. The food is just that good. It was clean; ambience ordinary.

I like this place a lot. It’s a really warm neighborhood restaurant with a little bit of something for everyone on the menu. I’ve eaten here a handful of times and have never been disappointed with my meal. This past Monday I showed up for their red beans and rice. Last time I added a fried pork chop(awesome) but this time I was good and got it grilled. Fried is always better. It comes with a salad(usual diner type) and I got the Italian dressing. Nothing special but it was fine. Their red beans are very good, big pieces of andouille. Yum. I’ve ordered fried fish here and it was great. I see lots of plates of fried chicken coming out and the onion rings look amazing. Maybe next time! There are better places for this food and much worse too but there’s no other place like this one. I would miss it if it disappeared for sure.

The exterior is clean, but plain, however the interior is very attractive and decorated with many local pictures. The bar area is also well presented. We thought our waitress, Hilda, did a very fine job. I ordered the Half Shrimp and Half Catfish Dinner Plate, which came with an enjoyable side salad. My partners shared the Deluxe Seafood Platter, which also came with the salad. Their Seafood Platter included shrimp, catfish, oysters, and a large stuffed crab item. Both meals had fries, of course. We were impressed that the fried seafood was not greasy at all, but had lots of flavor. They must have taken care with the batter. We found everything to be very good to excellent. We recommend it and would return. RJT

The service was excellent hence the 3 stars but the chicken which was a part of the competition did not have any flavor. It was perfectly fried and crispy and it appeared to have black pepper seasoning on it but it tasty very bland. I would try this place again for other dishes but not for the fried chicken. I see now why dookie chase won the prize for best fried chicken.

This is a Metairie institution that my great aunt and uncle used to love. I stopped in here with my dad for lunch at around noon on a Tuesday. Considering the time, the place wasn’t super packed and we were seated quickly. Looking over the menu, it’s all local New Orleans kind of food. For a starter, I decided on a cup of turtle soup. It came with some sherry to mix into it, and while I have had better turtle soup elsewhere, it was good and it definitely hit the spot. For my entrée I got the fried oyster platter that came with fries and a side salad. The platter was perfect. It was huge and packed with large oysters that were juicy and lightly fried. I liked that the platter came with both tartar sauce and cocktail sauce for dipping. There was so much food that I was more than happy to be able to take some of it home for later. My dad got the lump crabmeat au gratin. It looked amazing and it was covered with cheese, which made me definitely want to try it the next time I am here. My experience here was great. Heather was our waitress and she was super nice and attentive and made sure that we had everything that we needed. I will definitely return to Mr. Ed’s.

What can I say about this place! It’s awesome! Food is simple fresh and good olé New Orleans style food. My family of six all had to go boxes because of the large portions served. It’s a comfort food place for sure!

I’ve been wanting to check out Mr. Ed’s but, due to its tucked away location, it’s never really top of mind when I’m thinking of new places to go. Recently, I had to opportunity to finally try it out and ended up having a very enjoyable meal. I was with a larger group(there were around 10 of us.) We got there somewhat early and were one of only a handful of tables at the restaurant when we started. However, by the time we left, the placed was packed to the gills plus had a line of folks waiting. The other reviewers are definitely correct about the, um, shall we say«advanced» age of the majority of the clientele. I think it’s probably because(1) their prices are crazy reasonable and(2) they do serve a number of entrees that appeal to that age range, such as chicken livers(my mother, who is pushing 70, claims good ones are almost impossible to find these days.) Usually when you have a larger group, service can be slow. Not the case at all at Mr. Ed’s. Our server took excellent care of us and didn’t even blink at the high-maintenance folks in group(you know the folks I’m talking about.) She had other servers helping bring out food and watching for empty glasses. I was impressed by the service. Then came the food. Our group pretty much hit all of the areas on the menu. Speaking of the menu, what you see on their web site is just a tiny glimpse of what they offer… they literally had dozens of specials that were not on the printed menu. There were two sheets of specials in the menu, multiple menu boards on the walls with specials. I’m pretty sure there were more«specials» than usual menu items. And the food was really good. And, kind of shocking considering how low the prices are, but the portions are huge. Really, really huge. I almost never take leftovers, even if I have food left, because I always just end up throwing them out. But I took a heavy box full of leftovers and actually ate them later. I did manage to force down a piece of lemon meringue pie at the end of the meal, too. It was a damn, fine pie. I usually end up scraping off at least part of the meringue because it’s either too much or just not very good. This meringue was perfect and I ate every bite. I’d definitely go back and try something else. I’d also like another piece of that pie while I’m at it.

Heard about this place for years. My friend saw they were recommended for their fried chicken on . We both got fried chicken & decided we would start testing out fried chicken all over the city on Fridays. I got dark, my friend got white. We also had cheese fries and potato salad. Small green salad came with entrée. Iceberg, one cherry tomato, one cucumber. The fried chicken was not impressive. Sure, the meat was fresh and the batter was decent in crispy thickness. Problem is there was no flavor. No seasoning, quite boring — could have been in the midwest. Silver lining: Nola Blonde on tap.(not on menu) Good news, JP has moved on from basic Abita.

I have a hard time saying this place even deserves 1 star. Absolutely terrible. Stuffed artichoke was rock hard, gumbo was watery, batter on shrimp had black spots and our server was lost in space. Stewed chicken had a bad after taste. Most enjoyable part of the evening will be the yummy tums for dessert.

Dinner here last night, for the first time. It is definitely old school, but the kitchen knows what it’s doing! My eggplant Parmesan was delicious and my husband really liked his stuffed Mirliton dish. We both had the garlic vinaigrette dressing on our salad(it’s their house dressing) and it was wonderful!(This is coming from someone who makes her own salad dressings!). Our friends ordered the soft shell crab dinner and the fried chicken dinner and raved about both dishes. There was a $ 3 charge to switch the candied yams for new potatoes on the stuffed Mirliton dish, and I have no idea why, but, whatever. Our waitress wasn’t very good, or personable, but, whatever also.(This is why 3 stars instead of 4)

This is a great old school neighborhood eatery with classic New Orleans Creole and Italian dishes. They offer classics like turtle soup, gumbo, red beans, fried chicken, pasta and po boys along with more ambitious entrees(and for the Texans that crave it yes they have a chicken fried steak). They have a fantastic roast beef poboy with delicious chunks of garlic and a nice thick gravy. The ambiance is more 70’s style than classic New Orleans architecture and the crowd certainly trends more towards the geriatric but this place is more hip than any hipster could ever dream of. The menu selection is excellent while portions are generous and prices make this place a good value. This is an authentic locals joint with most of the folks working here being locals that give it that extra bit of local soul that many places have lost over the years.

This place is a step back into the 70s. The portions are generous, the menu is right out of my childhood, and it is so inexpensive! I wasn’t wowed by the paneed trout topped with crawfish étouffée, but it was decent enough to get me back to try something different. I wish I’d tried the stuffed mirliton(for you Northerners, this is AKA chayote). If you go to Mr. Ed’s, make sure to take a look at Bernard’s gas station next door. It’s straight from the 50s, complete with sloped windows and stacked flagstone. It could be a movie set. It was built in the Golden Era of Bucktown, for sure. Oh, those happy days!

Tucked into the back of the Lakeview neighborhood, this location of Mr. Ed’s has the old Italian family feel. Unfortunately I went here with my sister and her family on a Friday and did not order the pasta which looked to be the best thing on the menu. I had a shrimp poboy because I really wasn’t that hungry and it was meh, just a shrimp poboy.

This local restraint chain has gone steadily downhill. The food at the location in Kenner is awful and don’t go to to their burger joint without investing in Pepto Bismol. The only saving grace in this chain has been the original location on Oak. Now, unfortunately, this place too has succumbed to the same level of quality as the other locations. Additionally, the service is not as good as it once was. They are living off their success and cutting corners on food quality. I took my parents their yesterday. We had the fried eggplants and gumbo as an appetizer, «fresh» bread, and two seafood entrees(Trout Carrol and the Crabmeat Au Gratin). The fried eggplants were salty and thin cut like fries. The fresh bread was cold and not lightly toasted or warmed. The trout was over-cooked and the vegetables also cold. Half of the gumbo was rice and good luck on finding any seafood. The crabmeat au gratin was soupy liked it came out of a blender. Also, beware if you substitute any side of your entrée. I got my bill and noticed I was charged $ 3 to substitute fries for new potatoes! The waitress said she would see about adjusting the bill. She came back with nothing changed. Typically a manager would come to the table but he didn’t want to bother. When I complained to the waitress that no adjustment was made, her only comment was«I only work here». That pretty much sums it all.

I love Ed’s restaurants! This one and Austin’s are both wonderful. The food is as solid as some of the ladies’ hair that frequents the place for lunch. Truthfully lots of senior citizens have their regular lunch spots and this is on their weekly list. If it is good enough for them to keep coming back count me in too. The older folks who have lived here for over half a century know their food. Food is very good. Huge portions. Two dining rooms with a bar between them. Great vegetarian options on the menu too. The restaurant is hidden in a neighborhood near the lake. Recommend: * Crabmeat Au Gratin * Chicken or eggplant parmesan * Grilled Red Snapper ** Lemon Ice Box Pie(best thing on the menu)
