This is the only place around(right now) that makes me confused about barbecue. As if I am unable to «DTR» with BBQ food on the whole. And I most certainly have the hips to prove I have defined my relationship with BBQ… in fact, BBQ and I? Yeah, we’re going steady. Here’s why I get confused: I go here, mouth watering for Carolina BBQ and I get, well… the look… when I order. Like I cant possibly like this food. Like I cant possibly want what I ordered. Like I have to be punk-ing the owner on my way to get a double latte and a scone. But I DO love BBQ, all styles. Most especially Carolina style. Maybe it’s just the look I get. YOU go and let a girl know.

I found out about this place from a review in the Hartford Advocate a few years ago so I decided to try it and have been going here several times a month ever since. The pork ribs are good but can sometimes be dry and they are more like a spare rib not baby back ribs like one might expect, the half chicken, chopped chicken and turkey, pulled pork, beef ribs are all good. The brisket I didn’t really care for. All of the meats have a vinegar based sauce that you can get on them or on the side. The sides that come with the meals are not bad, the green beans look like canned ones but they do taste good, and the baked beans and mac an cheese are good has well. I been going here for several years and can’t say I have ever had a bad meal.

Passed by here on my way back into town and the wife had a craving for some pork, so we pulled in just to get a sample. Waited in line for about 10 minutes as the customer in front of me had a mighty big order. Once it was my turn I asked for ¼lb of Pulled Pork & ¼ lb of Brisket, and the man behind the counter was dumbfounded and asked«do you know how much ¼lb is?». I replied, «Yes, it’s a taste, that’s what I want»… he begrudgingly filled my order. I took paid $ 7 and took my container back to my car where my wife and I sampled. The meat had good flavor, and the smoke ring was present, however even with the vinegar sauce applied, it was overly DRY. The brisket wasn’t fall apart tender, it was overcooked and more like jerky, I had to rip it with my teeth. Overall, not a strong showing… I have a strong premonition that most of the food here is pre-cooked and reheated.

First time ordering food from this place and I love it! Real southern food, slow cooked smoked meat! The barbecue sauce is a vinegar base which I’m sure a lot of people aren’t familiar with but it is good. I had collard greens which were sweet and«vinegary» this place deserves an A+! Amazing

I have eaten here only once and will not return. I ordered pulled pork and ribs. The pulled pork and ribs were both dry. The pulled pork had a terrible flavor, it almost tasted like heated plastic/rubber. It was a bitter and had no pleasant taste whatsoever. The ribs were dry and tasted a bit better than the pulled pork, but were still quite lackluster. I always wanted to try this place, but left severely disappointed. Additionally, it can be quite pricey considering the quality and amount of the product you receive.

As the saying goes: «If you got nothing good to say…» I will stray from this in hopes that I save someone some time and money. Having passed by this barbecue truck a few times, I was hesitant to have their food. Imagine someone with a converted trailer in their driveway cooking food and serving it to you. What could go wrong? I decided to read reviews on this place and those reviews were good so I gave it a shot. I am not convinced that whomever wrote those reviews were likely affiliated with the owners or perhaps high on some mega drug. My wife and I go out to eat at least every 10 – 15 days without fail. I am usually conservative and will stick with what I know. I dislike having to waste money on food and despise feelike like I have taken money, crumpled it up and thrown it in a trash can. Which is just what I felt I did after eating the«substances» here. We order a Rib Platter and a Pulled Pork Platter. Because of the reviews I had read, I decided to try something different so I gave this place a whirl. I should have listened to my intuition as I had many times before. If there are no customers online, and I have never seen a customer during the numerous times I have passed this place, there is a good reason. The owner slash cook slash whomever you are had a really horrible attitude. Its as if we were bothering him and taking precious time away from his schedule just by ordering. Now, you would think that this person would be the best darn chef in the world with his smug disposition. At least if the food were good, I would pass it off as arrogance. The food was horrible. Ribs — Unsure what to describe of the taste other than picturing meat tenderizing in a combination of moth balls and rubber tires. Macaroni and Cheese — Perhaps we caught them at a bad time and they served us last month’s portion. Was hard, disgusting. Looked old. Collard Greens — The most neutral of the food. Tasted like I was eating grass after mowing my lawn. Cole Slaw — Tasted as if it had been sitting in a refrigerator for months on end uncovered Potato Salad — An oddly yellow colored funny tasting *thing* Pulled Pork — Tasted as if it been marinated in vinegar and nail polish remover As disappointed as the food was, it was not cheap. I spent $ 26.00 on the food alone and another $ 15 or so on McDonalds just to fill my stomach. I personally feel this state should have some serious inspectors who actually taste what food comes out of what establishment. I am sure prison food tastes better than this. Now to be fair about the situation, we gave one of our dogs a piece of a rib to which she licked twice and chose not to eat. She is certainly smarter than we were to buy here. After reading some of the other reviews here, I am seriously convinced that perhaps they are relatives or friends of the owner(s) of this establishment. No one who is sober, and or not abusing some super potent drug can seriously call this food let alone barbecue. I have had better food at the worst buffets I have been to. NOTETOOWNEROFTHISPLACE: i) Please try something different. Unsure what. Maybe rubs, maybe changing your wood. Your meats taste god awful horrible. So much so a dog passed it by. ii) Change your attitude. At least have an attitude while cooking some good food. iii) Cover your food or cook it fresh. There is no way on the planet Mac and Cheese should be as hard as a seashell. iv) Take some advice when it comes your way: «You are doing it completely wrong, change it up, period» If South Carolina foods taste like this, I will make it a point to skip that state if passing through. Jesus Christ it was just horrible. I gave this place 1 start because 0 stars aren’t an option

Southern Que was given the task of pleasing four hungry men on a lunch break. All obsessed with pulled pork and fans of the slaw-topping, our orders did not differ much from each other. Eating this sandwich was reminiscent of eating a hickory campfire — meant in the best way possible. The vinegar-based sauce had plenty of tang and smoke, but I’d have enjoyed another container of sauce on the side for dipping(and drinking, once the sandwich was gone). BBQ becomes soup-like when it comes to my habits, so this South Carolina style was somewhat outside of my comfort zone in that it was a bit more dry. Portions were satisfying but a ordering side would not have hurt; good words were said regarding the corn muffins. Satisfaction overall. The chef inside this cozy little trailer is a good man, as well.

I had thought I already wrote a review for this place but apparently not. Dollar for dollar best food in the Meriden –Wallingford area. The owners are awesome, high quality food and giant portions. It is S Carolina Bar B Q so it might differ from your idea what barbecue might be but it is very good and the owners are really into their art so if you are a foodie ask them about the regional differences between north and sounth Carolina Texas, KC and such. On the down side parking sucks but that is the only negative.

My husband and I are well-traveled BBQ fans ready to try anything. Place was very clean, service not overly friendly, but not mean, either. Sauce was thin, heavily vinegary, but good and had just a little kick to it. We ordered ribs and ½ chicken. Both were a little overdone, but not bad. Sides, especially collards, were great. Everything had just a little spice which made it interesting. Skip the rolls, they were pretty dry and not very interesting. I only gave three stars because we like BBQ and this place didn’t compare well with our experience. That being said, for Meriden, CT it was excellent.

Jeff heard about this place, and my love of pulled pork and beef brisket drew us here one evening after leaving Lowe’s plaza. I love the idea of supporting local businesses and mom and pop shops, but really the two men that were working out of this make shift kitchen didn’t seem too welcoming. We ordered a pulled pork sandwich and a beef brisket dinner. I have honestly had better pulled pork at Lyman Orchards or the Big E. It really wasn’t something to write home about. And the brisket was soooo spicy. I usually don’t like too much spice, but Jeff does, and he thought it was overly spicy as well. The BBQ they use is like an over spiced water, it didn’t even count as a sauce it was sooo thin. My boyfriend says I make better homemade corn bread, theirs was bland. Their mac and cheese wasn’t cheesy. I kinda wanted fresh out of the smoker food, and watching our food be microwaved destroyed my hopes of having this. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Brisket wasn’t as tender as we hoped it would be, and we were a little surprised that they just unwrapped our food and microwaved it before putting them in styrofoam for us to take out, but I have to admit that the ribs were really good, and the sauce had a nice tang to it. I went with two other people, which was a good idea because we were able to try different things, and that was good because some were better than others. The ribs were way better than the brisket. Very tender, almost fall-off-the-bone. Coleslaw didn’t have much flavor, but the collard greens were great — well seasoned, spicy and sweet. The mac ‘n cheese was also really good. I’d like to know when they actually pull the food out of the smoker so I can get there right as it comes out.

After living in Louisiana for five years, the one thing I really miss is excellent bbq. I decided to try SouthernQue after seeing they won best bbq in the record journal. It is exactly as the picture looks, just a trailer in a guys driveway. You would easily miss it if you didn’t know where it was. I ordered a smoked turkey sandwich for me and a pulled pork sandwich for my buddy. I also got the bbq beans. The sandwiches were excellent. Very juicy and perfectly smoked, just as good as back in Louisiana. The bbq sauce is a little spicy, unlike any other bbq sauce I’ve ever had, but it complimented the meats well. The beans were good, but nothing like down south.

I’m hesitant to be the first reviewer of this establishment. It is an absolute Gem. The best collard greens and pulled pork of my life. Reasonably priced. Hidden. Sinful. HUGE smoker. Big friendly owners. Picture grown men sitting around a table for 45 minutes straight MOANING at each other about the intense explosive yet soothing flavors in their mouths. Ok, maybe thats a little uncomfortable, but this place will evoke some of that wonder. True Que.
