Immediately south of I-40 on Jackson Ave., Tacos el Paisa is a food trailer that seems permanently located outside of a store called La Azteca. Just look for the tall Citgo sign: it sits almost directly beneath it. Did you notice that neighborhood where MPD held the press conference after seizing 2,100 lbs. of weed last month? Go there and you’re getting hot. El Paisa distinguishes itself upon passing with its ambitious trailer artwork. In a panoramic paint job, you’ll see depictions of iconic taco lovers like Jesus, river rafters, and a woman pressing tortillas by hand. And of course, food gets its space too. The art appears to be inspired. Or maybe it just inspired me. But the inspiration doesn’t end there. El Paisa serves tacos, and… more tacos. I’m pretty sure that’s it. I tried them as follows: asada, al pastor, and al carbon. The tacos were dressed with cilantro and onions. The al carbon also had tomatoes and jalapenos. The trio came with a side of tomatillo sauce. All were good, but the pastor was inferior to others I’ve had. I could’ve used some lime in my box too. If you’ve read even two of my reviews of Mexican joints, you know that I love some condiments. El Paisa doesn’t disappoint. You’ll find four different(I believe — don’t hold me to it!) homemade sauces(two red, two green) in squirt bottles, along with a big pickle jar of carrots, etc., in a cold water bath outside the window. I didn’t venture into the jar, but I did hit up the sauces. I’ll warn you, one of the red sauces brings the burn. Approach with caution and eyebrow protection. I only got to try two of the four sauces, and the green sauce I had was different than the tomatillo sauce that came with my tacos. Bring your own drinks, or buy them in the store if they’re open. If they sell drinks from the trailer, they didn’t push them on me. I didn’t see any napkins available either, but it was rainy when I ate. I’ll be returning to el Paisa. This place definitely has review upside. I didn’t quite enjoy this as much as the trailer at the Winchester Farmer’s Market recently, but it was solid. And my three tacos set me back… $ 6 even. Taco Bell-esque pricing. Sweet!
