Went out for my birthday last nite & crowd at Cheddars was out the door —so we decided to try Saltgrass next door. BOY am I glad we did! Homemade bread to die for… or is it the fantastic soft butter? I had prime rib, salad with homemade ranch & fresh cheddar cheese! & baked potato(good size, not marble like Logans Roadhouse serves these days). My husband had chicken tenders(smallish) & shrimp but LOTS of them! He said the batter has fantastic flavor(even Cheddars didnt have that). Needless to say we brought leftovers home. Its more pricey than Cheddars but if Im out celebrating… next time it will be here. Oh great service too! Love the décor & no LOUD music… THANKS for that!

Great service and some wonderful food. Love the bread. We had the seafood fondue and it was amazing as well. I for one have to say coworkers and I love coming here.

I have been to Saltgrass in Houston before and it was great but I was disappointed with quality and portions of food served. My salad was very skimpy and not fresh. My friends steak was over cooked she wanted it medium. The sides were good but everything else was not. Our bill $ 82 for two people not worth it. Don’t mind paying but expect good food for that price.

Didn’t even stay. Entire place smelled of sewage. Not appealing to eat in a place that smells that way

Celebrated our 33 anniversary today with lunch at Saltgrass/McAllen with a steak. The steak was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. Steve came to our table to congratulate us and our waiter brought us cheesecake which was also excellent. Great service from our waiter to the top. Thank you for the great experience

Excelente cortes americanos, en especial el sirloin y el t-bone. Carne muy jugosa, cocida a la perfección.

The one thing they can’t even get right are the steaks. Family ordered medium steaks and what we got were well-done steaks that were burnt on one side. We requested new steaks which made the wait time longer, and even then the new steaks were okay. Won’t be coming again.

From the moment we were greeted when we walked in, the experience only got better. Our server, David, recommended the Don Juan Margarita, and it was incredibly smooth and perfect prelude for the appetizer, salad, and dinner. Our steaks were perfectly cooked, and melted like butter upon taste. Not having been to any other locations for Saltgrass, I highly recommend this location. It’s ideal for business travelers, and people wanting delicious food at a fair price. That said, if you have children, I recommend finding a sitter so you can fully enjoy your experience.

Not worth the money. Our food did not taste«fresh». Customer service was an issue also.

Food was OK. We made it in for lunch during their opening time frame so that may have accounted for the over cooked steak and slow service. Will update review when we revisit

Visited this establishment with coworkers on business. This place does a good job at bring a modern steak house. The decorations on the wall like bison head, elk, deer, mongoose add to the southern atmosphere. My server was pleasant, happy and attentive. I ordered the ribeye with BBQ stuffed Shrimp! The rib eye was good to perfection and tasty but a Lil to fatty for my liking. The bbq stuffed shrink wad off the hook! Fried shrimp put in a jalapeño popper wrapped in bacon and smothered in bbq sauce. Lawd have mercy! If your feeling bad get the brownie cookie sundae with icecream! ! It was heaven

Got the Grilled Chicken. It was good chicken, but small portioned plate. It only came with one side and a lame salad. It came out to $ 15 At Cheddars I can get the same thing for 8 bucks with rice and two sides. And add a salad for a couple bucks more. Just go somewhere else. So I gave it two stars because the food was good, but just overpriced.

Not impressed. Very pricey for what we’ve got. The Chicken Laredo was pretty good, but not in line with price, and the baby back ribs, we’ve had lots better, everything was just ok. Would rather go somewhere else. The noise level was terrible, we found ourselves just sitting quietly, since we could even hear our own thoughts. Will not go back.

Not the greatest steak. Very dry. The sweet potato fries are the best though. They are topped with honey!

It started out great with a very enthusiastic hostess greeting. The waiter(s) were very gracious and the food was amazing, except for the steak. I ordered a New York strip medium-well and it came out rare. They took it back and it came back medium to medium-rare. I didn’t send it back again afraid of what would happen. The carrot cake is phenomenal, a must have! The staff gets 5 stars except for the«chef» and the rest of the food gets 5 stars except for the steak(which was seasoned really well). If they can figure out the proper way to cook a steak, it’ll be 5 stars easily.

Wife and I went with 2 other couples. Steaks and chicken were all terrific! My homemade mac-n-cheese may be better. But, this actually was made with real cheese and not the box milky stuff like most restaurants. This was good! Prices were right on line with other steakhouses like Longhorn which we also like. I think the steaks here were better. And the staff here worked well as a team making it pleasant. We’ll be back.

Although this restaurant is a chain, and I have had good experiences in the past, this location should be avoided. Three quarters of the way through our very mediocre meal(avocado that was more brown than green, over-cooked yet stone-cold chicken, etc.), I looked up and there was a MASSIVE cockroach on the headrest of our booth. The waiter was obviously embarrassed about it but, after removing the offending insect, made no effort whatsoever to make things right. The manager of the establishment, who had awkwardly interrupted our meal twice before, was suddenly and mysteriously unavailable. If you’re looking for steak, head across the highway to Rodizio Grill and avoid this roach motel.

Where do I begin to speak about the experience I had at Saltgrass? First, we were just at the Round Rock Saltlgrass last week and had an excellent dining experience, as we always have at that location. So our hopes were high when we saw the new McAllen location was open. We went at about 1pm or so on a Monday afternoon, were seated immediately, and received our menu from the waitress. We saw a nice selection of beer on the menu, I ordered a tall Blue Moon and my fiancée ordered a tall Miller Lite. The waitress disappeared and came back with some bread, but said the bar had neither Blue Moon nor Miller Lite on draft even though they were on the draft menu. We said ok, we’ll each have tall Micheloeb Ultra. She left and came back to say they had no Ultra either, which was also listed as on draft on the menu. So we asked what DO you have? We finally settled on Fancy Lawnmower(which was NOT on the menu) and Shiner Bock. With that behind us, we looked at the menu and ordered some fried mushrooms for the appetizer. My fiancée had ordered the steak with shrimp embrochette at the Round Rock location, and was disappointed not to see it on the menu here in McAllen. The only steak and shrimp combos were with battered shrimp. She noticed that they did, in fact, have shrimp embrochette with chicken tenders listed as an appetizer. When the waitress returned with our beer, we ordered our lunch and asked if we could substitute the battered shrimp with the embrochette from the appetizer. She didn’t know, but said she would check and let us know. I ordered the lunch 10oz Pat’s ribeye with sautéed mushrooms, a baked potato, and a side of steak fries. The waitress left, and the manager returned to tell us that if we wanted to substitute the shrimp embrochette that he would only allow it if we paid the FULL price of the appetizer, which was $ 8.99! Nine bucks for a substitution? No thank you! My fiancée settled for the battered shrimp with steak and macaroni and cheese. Around this time our mushrooms arrived, and they were delicious, probably the best fried mushrooms I’ve ever had. The ranch dip was rather small so I asked the waitress to bring some«Border Sauce» which she said was really good. We also asked for some more beer, since we had already been sorting out the menu for about 20 minutes, and figured by the time we received our other beers, our entrees would be out. The Border Sauce never came, and another waiter finally delivered our beer. We asked him if he would remind our waitress of the Border Sauce. By the time the waitress brought it out, we only had a few mushrooms left which we saved just so we could try the Border Sauce. But after 10 or so minutes of waiting, they were lukewarm at best, and it turned out the Border Sauce was just thousand island dressing only a little spicy. By this time we had finished our complimentary Shiner Bock bread which was very good, and wasn’t as dry and flaky as it was at the Round Rock location. Another waitress came by to remove the cutting board and knife, and asked us if we would like more. «Sure!» I said, figuring it would probably never arrive anyways(it didn’t.) Our entrees arrived 20 – 25 minutes after ordering. My fiancées plate looked great, but I was presented with a steak covered in sautéed ONIONS. I rarely, if ever, send anything back, as I’m not a very picky eater. But I absolutely abhor onions, so I immediately told the waitress I wanted to send it back. I was implicit that I didn’t just want them scraped off, I wanted a different steak entirely. She took the steak but left the steak fries, which were not really fries but more like country fried potatoes. So now I could either eat the side without the steak or wait for the steak and let the potatoes get cold. I was all but fed up at this point, so I just ate them before I was interrupted by another manager who apologized about the mix up with the onions and assured me the steak would be out right away. About 7 or 8 minutes later, the manager returned with my steak, and again apologized. He waited to make sure it was cooked medium, as I ordered, before apologizing again and leaving. The steak was excellent after it finally arrived. In fact, the only reason I gave the place the two stars was because all of the food was actually outstanding, a stark contrast to the overall experience. For what turned out to be an $ 83.00 lunch ticket, we’ll just stick to Longhorn Steakhouse. The price wouldn’t have been an issue at all for us, had the service matched the meal. But between the confusing beer selection, the snafu on the steak, and the absolutely insulting suggestion that we pay $ 9 to substitute a few shrimp, it just seemed like a slap in the face to have to pay so much after all was said and done. We won’t be back, and if you have high expectations from an experience at a Saltgrass outside of McAllen, you should lower those expectations before heading to the McAllen location.

Wow what an amazing restaurant! Food was excellent! Service was outstanding! You have to try it if you havent already! My husband and I were doing some shopping and noticed the new restaurant. We decided to give it a shot. As soon as we went in we were greeted and they actually opened the doors! Something very unusual in RGV! We had no idea it was their opening day, but did notice they might’ve been a litle over staff. They had about 4 – 5 hostesses and it seem like 5 – 6 management members. They took about 5 minutes to get us seated which wasnt too bad. We were their at about 5ish so it was busy but not too crazy for dinner. They immediately sat us down and right away were greeted! The first person that went to our table was Rudy, he welcomed us to the restaurant and asks us if we wanted somethng to drink. He was very polite, professional and respectful(again something unusual for the RGV) next we had Sofia she was our server for the night who tool our order. She was also very friendly and professional. SHe gave us her recommendations on food options and was very detailed. When the food arrived the servers were amazing again professional, polite and the presentation was just really really good! Im glad the restaurant opened up in MCallen and hope other restaurants learn from this one. Customer service has to be on point not just the food. We also were greeted by one of the management team members. HE checked on us and made sure everything was fine we chit chatted and we complimented his staff and wished them luck and told him that hopefully the staff keeps it up because it makes a BIg difference for customers to return. Like us! I will definitely be going back the food was really good and with exceptional service. I hope they get more Unilocal reviews!
