Roots Organic Salon

went to Roots yesterday for an appointment with Len. After being kept waiting for nearly a half hour, (Len was only one working) we started to discuss how I wanted to have my hair cut — but Len wouldn’t listen to me but kept insisting that with his cut I wouldn’t need rollers (haven’t used in 5 years since I cut my hair short) and his cut was the only way to go. His cut looks like the early Beetles or the never popular «bowl on the head cut». He was totally unwilling to listen to me but kept insisting I had beauty school haircut «Short 101» and he needed 5 years (!!!) of doing my hair to correct it~ So, I got up and left — so if you go see him be prepared for doing your hair his way…

Original post from June 2015. 3 stars: I’ll aim to update this in about a month or two, to see how the cut is doing. To preface, I told both Lenny and Gen to do whatever they felt would best fit my needs and look. I’m not someone who likes to spend a lot of time on my look. Lenny cut my hair and took off about four inches to get rid of damaged hair and bring it up to essentially one length. It’s a bit shorter and puffier than I’d like, I’m not sure how well it compliments my face shape but I’m confident that as it grows, I’ll be pleased. I’ve also been told that I should only need a haircut twice a year. Love that. Lenny was a bit rough with his touch, but was good. Gen did my color and opted for soft coppery highlights in my brunette hair. They look very natural and give me a little brighter look without harsh chemicals. Overall, I’m not blown away and gushing over my style, but I hope the «wash and go» claim and easy maintenance will make up for the lack of styling to fit my face and that it will grow out nicely. Fingers crossed.
Update: November 2015. 1 Star. One of the worst haircuts I’ve ever had in the end. I had such high hopes for this growing out nicely, but I feel like I have holes in my hair. It is most definitely not «wash and go» as promised. It’s more, wash, blow dry, iron, iron again, product and hope for the best. The color is still good though. Disappointed in the cut, especially for the price, and likely won’t go back here.
Update: December 2015: Still 1 Star but now I’ve been told by the salon owner that I’m a nut job and that both my mother and I should go back to our old place. Had he offered a second cut to make things right, I probably would have accepted and given him another chance and an updated review.

My Update.
It has been almost a year since I received my cut and highlights from Roots. I have to say; I have never had a cut that could go so long without maintenance. Just 2 weeks ago I needed a trim. (I do not live on the Cape) so I was not able to go back to roots. In saying that, my cut was minimal for maintenance and the stylist remarked how well my hair looked for not being cut in over 10 months. I would have to agree. I also have to remark on how well the highlights that Genevieve game me grew out. It was so natural, that I have not done any lightening since I was at ROOTS. As my hair grew, the highlights softened and just faded so naturally, as if it was lightened by the summer sun. My hair is in amazing shape and stylish.
I will say again; this salon is NOT for a person that wants a fast and boring $ 30.00 cut and dry. They take their time and give you a cut to meet your styling needs/​requirements. You will not be disappointed if you convey your needs and restraints. You will get an amazing cut & highlights here.

Lenny has given me the best haircut. I travel from NJ because he has given my thin, fine hair the shape and body it used to have. He is truly a pro. Genevieve knows how to mix beautiful, natural color. They are the best.

Today I got my haircut by Genevieve. She was friendly and very attune to my needs. A great conversationalist as we’ll. I just liked the idea of their salon being purely organic. It means something to me that they value quality, as do I. My hair ended up looking great, and exactly what I had envisioned before going in. Genevieve is a wonderful stylist. I’ll definitely be back.

Went to Lenny hoping to have a cut that would bring out my curls more and a low maintenance no need to dry cut. He did as I hoped and I love it. He didn’t push any products and explained why he was doing what he did. I think he’s a hair artist and you have to be prepared to let go of perhaps your old tired ways of doing things. I’ll be back.
