This isn’t your fathers summer camp. This is a CYA/CDF Fire Camp. That’s California Youth Authority/California Dept of FOrestry. Juvenile first-time offenders with non-violent records & short sentences are given the opportunity to train to become a wildland firefighter. This camp has a dormitory that houses 75 – 100 young men. Other facilities include: rec room, free weights, swimming pool, movie theater, football/baseball field and a bakery. Youths take 6 weeks of training in the classroom and Field to become safety certified as a wildland firefighter. Most kids spend 1000’s of hours per year working on the firelines in California to repay society for their wrongdoings. Plus they work a job at the camp or go to school everyday to learn a skill or finish school. CYA makes up to 75−80% or more of the fire fighting workforce in California. Did you know… Fighting fires in California has been compared to the experience of war. This experience definitely changed my life forever.
