West Side Story

I’d have to agree with Kelsey T.‘s review (fun fact, I saw the show with her!). The musical was very underwhelming. The story and character development was severely lacking, and yes, there was just too much dancing (read: the dancing in a scene was drawn on for longer than it should have been), too much making out (seemed so fake), the songs were very forgettable, and the story never really delved into any of the characters the way it should have.
It mainly felt so forced when the two main characters meet and then literally 5 minutes later, they say «I love you» to each other. Basing the rest of the story on that fleeting encounter that was not ever developed made the entire rest of the musical lose ground with me. If the foundation is not there, then all the fillers just add to the disappointment, and that was the case with this musical. It had so much potential! Sadly, it just did not achieve what it could have.
That said, yes, Anita definitely stole the show with her strong character, gorgeous looks and graceful dancing.
I would not go see this again, but it may be something to do if all the other shows are not available (note: it closes at the beginning of next year).

Maybe it’s because it took me four tries to get rush tickets, but I was a little underwhelmed by this show. Rush ticket winners are selected two hours before the show, and you can put your name in to enter 30 minutes before the drawing occurs. Just make sure to have $ 26.50/ticket in cash (maximum of 2 tickets).
The show is pretty true to the source material, but the character development seems a little lacking. I was a bit bothered by the fact that there seemed to be an overwhelming amount of dancing (and yes I’ve seen the movie). The show could’ve done with a little less making out between Tony and Maria and a little more actual talking between them. Songs are decent, but nothing that really sticks with you. The woman playing Anita steals the show for me.
