I had an amicable separation from my husband and it was time to get a divorce but I didn’t want to pay exorbitant legal fees for a simple, uncontested one where we don’t share property or kids. The New Start Project is a non-​profit ‘dedicated to providing low cost uncontested divorces’ and offers the following services which I found crucial in navigating the system:
— prepares all paperwork for uncontested divorces
— separation agreements
— brief services in contested divorces (notice of appearance; answer)
— correcting faulty paperwork in existing divorce actions
I tried researching which correct forms to submit and doing everything on my own but the city court website is incomplete and has virtually no real guidance (even though they claim to offer ‘instructions’ on how to complete the forms which I found entirely unhelpful). I highly recommend paying New Start’s $ 300 fee — it was well worth it (I think they also offer a sliding scale for low income people). These ladies know the people at the court who process the forms, which forms are applicable and where to go to get them submitted. Without New Start’s help, I would have had a hard time doing it all correctly; the whole process took only 6 weeks and I’m now single again.
