I decided to spend some time in the Central Park on a pleasant Autumn evening after work at around 5−6pm. While sitting in the park, I said, hmm, I should go down to Strand bookstore near Union Square to pick up a James Baldwin book to read while I begin to spend more time in the subway(typically I’m a cyclist in good weather). I decided to leave the Park at the southeast corner heading towards 59th and 5th Ave. I was headed to the 4÷5÷6 to get to Union Square quickly when I noticed a familiar sign out the corner of my eye… Strand has a daily kiosk right at the edge of the park! Perfect! They had the book that I was looking for and I was grateful. A perk to the kiosk is that they have a large collection of half priced paperback books available and they do accept credit cards; always a plus. The staffer that I met seemed knowledgable about what they had out there so that was a plus too, seeing as it was later in the evening and getting harder to see in the dark what was available. All in all, this a great stop to make before going to relax in the park, or a nice stop to make when leaving and just needing something to read if you have a commute back to one of the outer boroughs.

Found this kiosk completely by accident — I was wandering around and had a hankering to hang out in Central Park for a while, but didn’t have anything to do there other than sit in the grass since I hadn’t brought a book with me. The Strand kiosk was the unexpected answer to my prayers! For a pop-up stand, there’s actually quite a selection — from contemporary fiction to classic novels to kids’ books and souvenirs. I picked up a copy of Jeffrey Eugenides’ «Middlesex» for just seven bucks. Doesn’t get much better than that! They also accept cards, which is very convenient. Really glad this place is here and can see myself coming back when I feel like spending a few hours in CP reading(which happens often).

A nice ending to the AIDS Walk New York last Sunday, walking out of the park, heading towards the subway and coming upon the Strand Kiosk. A nice place to grab and peruse some books(a nice variety of selections too) before descending into the subway for a long ride. Picked up something and made the ride that much better. ..

Liked the outdoor book kiosk located next to Central Park. Noticed a book marked ‘for the Hipsters’ Flicked through the ‘Wall and Piece’ book and ended up buying it:) Visited in Summer 2013

I love this location because if you’re strolling along Central Park and you feel like grabbing a good read on a fairweather day, this is fabulous. They do have a few tables of new books however there’s a larger selection of used books that are in fantastic condition. Plus they accept credit cards which is useful.

I often find myself picking up a book when I pass by this kiosk(four out of five times now). It’s that it’s so conveniently located right on the corner of 5th and 60th. and since we all end up in Central Park at some point on our trips to New York, most of us will eventually come across it at least once and(if you’re as easily lured by Ayn Rand & Paulo Coelho as I am) possibly buy something. Considering the small space, the kiosk always has quite a selection of great classics and new titles.
