I broke my left hand last year, and it was the first time I had broken something. Obviously shaken up, the male nurse noticed and tried to keep me laughing and my mind away from the pain. He noticed I had a kabbalah bracelet on, and he actually made an enormous effort and untied it using stitching tools, so he didnt have to cut it off. He made a quick cast, and gave me every possible bit of information I needed about what had happened to my hand. He sent me off to another specialist who lead to a healed hand. Overall, this nurse was so amazingly nice and compassionate that I will never forget my brief encounter with him.

My foot was in pain and after three weeks, I was suddenly having trouble walking on it. I called my PCP, who told me I should come here. I called the center first to make sure that they took my insurance and then came over. I didn’t get much of a diagnosis and was basically told to f/u if 3 weeks in a hard shoe didn’t relieve the pain(it didn’t, and in fact, caused pain in new areas). On my way out I asked if I had a copay and was told if there were any charges. Imagine my surprise when I got a bill for nearly 400 dollars in the mail today because the physician doesn’t take Aetna. I’m outraged since I specifically asked them ahead of time. I would have never come here and would have gone to City MD, which has much shorter wait times and physicians that frankly are at least as competent as the one I saw.

BEWAREMEDICALINSURANCEFRAUD! This is not a review of the care, care was totally good. We have been fighting a bill for months which was billed incorrectly as an Emergency Room which this facility is not, it is and Urgent Care Walk-In Clinic and the billing department has billed it as an Emergency Room which means we get billed for $ 250 copay instead of $ 100. The Insurance carrier is fighting NYU’s billing department and NYU refuses to admit to the«error» and change the bill. They are being reported for fraud. Apparently this is not the first time this happens. If you go, insist on paying your copay at the reception desk do not let them bill you.

Still waiting. Coming up on 4 hours. No triage, nothing. A regular ER would have been better. Update: bit over 6 hours, xrays taken, nothing read.

If you ever break a piece of your hand in NY you will quickly realize two things: A) You need an emergency X-ray examination and cast application. B) There is a dramatic shortage of hand doctors in the city. Enter the Samuels Orthopaedic Immediate Care Center, an emergency room sponsored by the NYU Hospital for Joint Desease. This is a place where you can just walk-in and be diagnosed by a qualified resident student/doctor in minutes. My visit(a minor fracture) lasted around 1 hour, including registration, X-ray, diagnosis and cast application. I even got a chance to chat with the doctor on premise(no kidding, try to this in another emergency room). Sure it’s not perfect: rooms are small and somber, the area is not exactly immaculate for my standards, but in a city where you never seem to gain the privilege to be first in line for quality service, I consider this place a hidden gem.
