What an interesting experience Tiny Totland is. The Manchester location is much bigger than you’d expect from the inside, but there’s a few tricks to getting the most out of your experience. First off, know that Tiny Totland is not a big-box corporate baby store. That means they’re not going to be located nationally in prime retail locations with a massive computerized inventory and stores designed by retail professionals. In addition to the Manch. store, they have locations in Portsmouth and S. Portland, ME. If you’re having your first kid, spend some time getting oriented at a big-box store, and then come to Tiny Totland once you’ve learned about all of the stuff you’ll need to buy. Located in the old, old, old Manchester Locomotive Works building at the corner of Canal and Dow streets in Manchester, it has been family owned and operated since the 1940’s. Once you first walk in, the store looks like a confusing bomb went off, but appearances can be deceiving. The carpets and overall aesthetic vibe are definately not corporate polished, and feels like an old-school Manch store(ever go into the basement at McCrory’s or the old Bldg. 19 off of Mammoth Rd?). However, the benefit of shopping here comes from the service and the quality of the merchandise. The staff know their stuff when it comes to baby furniture, and they don’t carry the cheap inferior stuff you find at the big-box stores. That being said, if you do your homework, you can walk out with a much better deal on higher quality furniture. One of the other benefits is that they carry a ton of high-end baby stuff. You’d never know it from first glance, but if you’re looking for trendy high-end baby stuff(Bananafish, Maclaren, Peg Perego, etc.), this place carries some of the really pricey stuff, and a lot of items from those companies that the big-box stores never stock. Furniture is one thing Tiny Totland does really well — they have a massive selection, and have several mock bedrooms set up with interesting decorating ideas. Unlike other big box stores, they also offer delivery — at a reasonable price, and it includes set-up and removal of all packaging materials($ 60 for delivery of crib, dresser, changing table, mattress, and conversion kit to Nashua). As mentioned, look elsewhere to get an idea of what you’re looking for, then go on Baby Gear Safari over at Tiny Totland. Helpful hint: While the street address is technically Dow St., I don’t think there’s actually any access from Dow St. You’ll need to get to it from the northbound lane of Canal St. While all the staff were friendly, Mark was outstanding. We unknowingly stopped in on a Friday night after they had technically closed — he still hung around and answered questions. Smart move — because we came back within 48 hours and bought a complete bedroom set, and have recommended this place to a lot of our friends!
