Had previously sent them an email from their contact info on their website which came back undeliverable, kind of makes sense given my experience tonight and the attention to detail. To be fair, Big Fat Daddy’s has a stand at the Brandywine Strawberry Festival, which I’m guessing(hoping) is different quality than their catering. The following is the email I sent. Since it was undeliverable, I figured I post here. Just came back from the Brandywine Hosp. Strawberry Festival. We had just moved to the area last year, and I haven’t heard for your catering company before tonight. I am hoping your food is much better that what I experienced tonight. I ordered the Crab Fries. The $ 9 price for the portion didn’t bother me since I realize you have to pay proceeds in some manner to the Hospital. However the quality was the worse I have experienced whether at a fair, catered event or restaurant. After receiving my order I met my wife at a table to eat. The fries were old and cold, the crab dip was barely warm. I went back to ask to be remade since it was cold, which they did and apologized. They dropped fries in the fryer for their 2nd fry and believe it or not, dumped them right on top of the old, cold fries. They gave me a new order and when I sat down to eat, the fries were hot, but limp, greasy and not crisp, evidently not fried long enough. It took less than a minute when they did the 2nd fry. The crab dip had minimal crab flavor. If I didn’t know what it was, I wouldn’t have been able to tell. Just thought I’d drop you a note in hopes you can correct for the next three nights of the festival and perhaps be able to promote your catering business with higher quality. If I was interested in booking a catering event in the near future, this was an opportunity lost. The workers were courteous.

We had BBQ catered from this place and it was absolutely delicious. I could taste the smokiness of the ribs and the flavor couldn’t be any better. It’s obvious that this place spent a lot of time marinating the ribs, etc and the portions were huge. I was very pleased with the catering and everything was fresh and expertly cooked to perfection.

I guess Unilocal isn’t really big in Baltimore yet, because I’d have sworn that Big Fat Daddy’s would have been reviewed by now, as it’s something like an institution. While I am no longer a Baltimorean, I did pick up the taste for pit beef while living in Charm City. For the uninitiated, it’s a delicious beef sandwich, with roots deep in the working class. It’s kind of like BBQ, but not. It’s grilled, piled on a bun, and slathered with horseradish and onions. Do not attempt any post pit beef make out sessions. Big Fat Daddy’s does pit beef well. Very well. So much that on the odd chance that I’m on the Beltway, I’ll stop by for a sandwich. I’m not convinced that there isn’t a better road side pit beef place tucked inside a little corner of Essex or Dundalk somewhere(hence only 4 stars), but I haven’t found it. Yet.
