Reference is a decent barber shop. They specialize mostly in urban/ethnic styles for men, but my barber, a pretty nice guy named Xavier/Alex, did a decent job with my «ivy league style» cut. For both business and preppy styles, I still think Razors in Somerville is best, but I’m happy with my cut(and I’m rarely happy with my cut). I rated this place A-OK(3 stars) vs ‘I’m a fan’(4 stars) because they didn’t have any AC on, and it was miserably hot and humid today. I sat in that chair sweating bullets. Would’ve went to Razors, but they had a 1+ hour wait all day. If I’m in a bind again, I’ll definitely consider Alex at Reference.

I’ve lived in Malden for a few months and haven’t been able to find a good barbershop. So i starting going to Boston for overpriced cuts, like mens salons with fancy chairs, fancy TV“s and high prices($ 45+). Those were fine and the stylists were cute but it adds up. I’ve also gone to James Joseph salon where they give you a cappuccino and a scalp massage($ 52 w tip). When i finally woke up from my spending I decided to check this new place out in Malden with no expectations. I usually go to a barbershop at home but its all old Italian guys, i’ve never been to a real barbershop. First impression is that the chairs are really comfortable and the personal TV is a nice touch. Service was great and friendly, perhaps because it wasn’t very busy. The haircut in general looked great and I couldn’t tell the diff from a $ 40 haircut. My barber was a lil shaky but maybe because he had never cut a white Jewish guy’s hair before, but still very friendly. The owner even shook my hand afterwards and was committed to me coming back. Unilocal is all about helping small business so they deff deserve a shout out and some recognition for a great mens barber shop.
