Went back again this weekend. My husband and I pulled into the parking lot with some reservation. The parking lot was full and it was a Saturday night. How long would it take to get seated… How long would it take to rest? Although we didn’t have any reservations we were seated right away by a very pleasant hostess. The place was all hustle and bustle with lots of customers. Right off we ordered a round of drinks and Aj’s onion rings which were to die for! Our order was taken with no delay. I ordered the 4oz fried lobster and my husband ordered the baked pasta. Our waitress made us feel like were her most important table even though the place was packed with many large parties but she was at our beck and call. Our meal arrived :’) prefect timing and was superb with no complaints. I enjoyed it thoroughly and cannot wait for our next trip to Ajs. The food was fantastic and the staff made sure the overall experience matched the excellent fare.

I live in Phoenix, but when my grandparents celebrated their 50th anniversary at AJ’s, I called to order a special dessert for them while they were there. The staff was so kind and helpful and made for a really special surprise for my grandparents. Thank you thank you!

My husband and I were passing through from Michigan to Kansas and needed to find a place to have lunch other than the usual fast food haunts. I’m so thankful for my Unilocal app. because this place is amazing! My husband ordered a chicken breast sandwich and I ordered a sandwich called The Westpork, which is pulled pork with Swiss cheese and cole slaw on it and both were truly delicious! Service from Josh was impeccable and we will return in the near future for dinner. The atmosphere is also really cool and open.

This place is awesome! Everything was delicious. Their homemade croutons and house dressing made me have seconds on their salad. Their hamburgers are the best I have ever eaten. Nothing we ordered was bad. Their service and food was quick. We did make a reservation and I do recommend that but we will definitely be going back! A must!

We eat here whenever we are in Macon, Missouri. Sure prices may run a little high on some items but everything is very good quality and delicious. Delicious bar drinks as well. Nice place.

This was a nice place I had lunch at today. They have all house made salad dressings. The pear salad was really good. Great prices for lunch also. I think it would be good for dinner also.

AJs has generally good service, but lots of fried food st high prices. They overcharged us 4.00 yesterday! Sunday special was 9.99 for a half rack of ribs. We were charged 12.00 each. I will try to get in touch with them tomorrow. PS: Fortunately we kept our receipt and they were able to track it down and they credited our charge. This sort of oversight normally would not have been caught by the customer. Beware.

most of the better items from the Pear Tree have been retained. AJs is one my favorite places to eat — even though it is a 60 mile drive for us. If you are on a budget, they have some very good sandwiches and other lower cost entrees but you can still get Lobster and good steak cuts.

This use to be one of our favorite places to eat, but the last 4 times we’ve eaten there the food has been average at best. The only thing that keeps us coming back now is the salad. They still have the best salad in town!

Lots of mediocre food served at a snail’s pace by a very overworked, friendly waitress. She appeared to have the entire dining room on our side to herself. I ordered a club and it came with a huge mound of old, cold, limp bacon. When one of the owners came over to deal with a complaint from the table next to us, I took the opportunity to ask him why the bacon was not hot or even warm and very soggy. He said — and I quote, «We like to cook our bacon in the morning and leave it out so it will be room temperature when served.» What is this? I actually thought he was joking but no indeed. He meant what he said and he made that very clear. Prices are far too high for this type of restaurant and specifically, what one ends up getting on their plate. Very loud. More like a sports bar than a local restaurant. Everyone at our table was way less than thrilled with their entrees. Oh yes — in addition, the bathroom was not clean at all. In fact, it appeared not to have been checked or cleaned in a long time. Would not return.

It was ok. The onion rings were the best part! They were just as good as another user said. Their pricing on the menu is odd. I saw a salad for $ 52. Our waitress was snotty and rude. Otherwise it was ok. If she had been pleasant it may have made the experience worth repeating but as is I will avoid and go elsewhere when in town. The rest of the food we ate was good, but as I said the waitresses personality(or lack thereof) will keep me Away. Now Coltons in Kirkville was well worth the drive.

Hit and miss place. Charming décor, decent drinks onion rings are a must have… the rest is a gamble. I miss the early days of AJ’s when everything was fantastic. For over a year now, whenever we have tried it, we have walked away disappointed and feeling that we paid too much.

I really want to like this place: it has charm and character. But the bulk of the menu is fried, and the prices are ridiculous for the location/setting/portion. New York City prices for steak in Missouri? No, I can’t do it. The best thing on the menu: the caesar chicken salad! And the onion rings are to die for. Don’t get me wrong: I love fried food, but there is something about AJ’s that every time I eat here I feel awful and have GI upset that night and next day. The Burgers: not worth the hype, remind me of Steak and Shale burgers, not in a good way. They are not thick, juicy burgers, but firm, thin little patties that are devoid of juice. After The Pear Tree burned, the owners expanded the dinning area at AJs and incorporated the menus together.

Great service and food. Best salad and chicken parm! Really light«immortal» marinara sauce. If you’re near Macon, make the time to eat at this restaurant.

We took a large group to AJs for a birthday dinner, and it was one of the best birthday meals in recent memory! The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The food is a little on the pricer side for northeast MO, but you are paying for the quality of ingredients and food. I had the fried lobster, it was amazing. Others ordered steak(mouth-watering) and pasta. Everything was wonderful. They have a great alcohol selection, and the house wine was nice and affordable. Overall a restaurant that I would expect to flourish in nearby Columbia, St. Louis, or Kansas City. A very nice addition to the area! Make it a regular spot!

We live in Kansas City and were driving back from a weekend trip in Illinois visiting family who told us we had to stop here and try the onion rings. No joke these were THE best onion rings we have ever had. The batter was something else, it sort of melted in your mouth and the flavor was just right. I also ended up getting a pork tenderloin sandwich which was equally amazing as it was fried in this delicious batter. Our server was super nice and service was great as well. This place will definitely become a staple every time we drive to Illinois and honestly I can’t wait to return! HIGHLY recommended if you’re passing through Macon and need somewhere to eat!

So, after several meals at AJ’s, I’m still a fan, but with a few caveats. Since The Pear Tree closed down, some menu items have been removed in favor of adding Pear Tree menu items. I miss the nachos, but the crab rangoons are pretty good — light, crispy batter and creamy center. I really wish they had kept the biggie bread! I think the quality of the meat for the burgers isn’t quite as good as it used to be, but it’s hard to go wrong with a batter dipped chicken salad. All three dressings are great and compliment the delicious chicken wonderfully. BBQ sauce is a little too sweet, but smoke sauce is quite good. Happy hour prices are awesome and make the drive well worth it. Overall, a very good, solid restaurant for NE Missouri.

We were expecting a sports bar type place with good bar food. But this place is more than just a sports bar! It has everything from Filet Mignon to Lobster(imported). The food is prepared well, the atmosphere is that of a sports bar and a country style sit down restaurant. The waiters and waitresses are very helpful and the price is just right for the food.
The food is prepared fast and well. I had the 6oz. Filet Mignon with baked potato. Since one of us ordered the pear tree salad, the whole table got a huge bowl of salad with 4 dressings(house vinaigrette, classic ranch, French, etc.). The best of them was the house vinaigrette(be prepared for a little spice, its got horseradish). The Filet was a little undercooked in the middle, but very tender and delectable! The baked potato was very good, not burnt and the sour cream was good in moderation.
The atmosphere resembled that of a semi-bar/restaurant with one bar and the rest of the building with tables. It was average noise so no yelling across the table was necessary and lighting and heat were just fine. Despite being a sports bar, they did not carry the Big Ten Network so we couldn’t watch the Mizzou game(weird). Our waitress was extremely friendly and nice and was very insightful about the menu. She even helped me pick out the desert!
On to everyone’s favorite part of eating out: DESERT! We shared the OMG, which is a doughy(oh yeah doughy) chocolate chip cookie covered in caramel with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce(with whip cream and cherry on the side). It will fulfill any sweet tooth and then make you want more! I highly recommend it to cap it off with a meal if you’re looking for something that will make your mouth water!
Overall, AJ’s has succeeded in providing a nice, sports like atmosphere with the comforts of great home cooked food, great service, and a wonderful eating experience. The lack of channels and only a medium sized bar area detract it from actually being a sports bar, but it has made up for it with quality food and service! Next time you’re in Macon, go on over to AJ’s!

Sadly this use to be a favorite place to go. Loved the menu and the service. Unfortunately that has changed. The owners have decided to merge The Pear Tree with AJ’s and much of the menu has changed along with the prices. $ 15.00 for 3 jumbo shrimp!!! $ 27.00 for a Ribeye strip that is swimming in Au Jus! I think not. The pork tenderloin was too tough to cut with a steak knife. Perhaps the owners have forgotten they are located in Macon. The menu isn’t the only disappointment, the service is very poor and the overall experience left our group vowing not to return.

Had the Ruben which I am really particular about, to say the least not impressed. What else was I not impressed with? 1. My table was verrrryyyy crooked! Not kinda, but very! 2. Had to learn about the specials from the waiter across the dining room, not mine. 3. The onion rings, come on whats all the hype? 4. My water not gettng refilled, bet if it was a beer it would’ve. Now you ask, is that it? Nope, the biggest reason is because they produce a product(condiments) that reccomends storage in a refrigerated area after opening and then put it on the non-refrigerated table to serve the patrons??? HHHMMMMM. Regardless of everything else, a blatent violation of their own food safety reccomendations placed on the table for everyone to eat is why I would NEVER come nor reccomend any of the AJ’s or Pear Tree establishments! Oh, I have attatched a picture of the condiment in questions lable on the Unilocal site for this one.
