No sale. I had heard that the place had decent tacos so I stopped by to give it a try. It is portraying itself as three businesses serving through one location.(1) Bruno’s Pizza,(2) Gringo’s Tacos, and(3) Smitty’s Hots — which has it’s main location in a small roadside shop on the main drive through Lyons on Route 31. I walked in to the place despite the handwritten sign taped to the door, with the message«open two days 12 — 2» — WTF is that? The only person working in the place immediately told me that he only had about one third of his menu available. Because now that it was Spring, Smitty’s hots was back at the main(summer) location, and also that the«Mexican» menu was«seasonal» and that guy just left. So all he has got is the Pizza menu. OK stuff happens, but what the hell. Tacos are seasonal? Really? Only one guy can make that third of the business? I left without any tacos. This location has a reputation for having changed hands about once a year, often more frequently, perhaps they are in middle of that now? A coworker of mine who had recommended the tacos had stopped by two days before and the whole place was closed up. It did not seem like a well run business.

Bruno’s was busy today, so it seems like they’re off to a good start. I lived in California for 12 years, so I know a decent taco, and for being from Lyons, NY, the steak taco I had at Bruno’s was pretty decent. My lunch partner had a tostada(Bruno’s calls it a Mexican Pizza — why?). She said it was a little greasy, but I had to deliver it, so it wasn’t eaten immediately, which anyone who’s made tostadas knows, is key. You have to eat them right away. The problem was exacerbated by Bruno’s styrofoam takeout containers. Let’s ignore, for a moment, that these things are awful for the environment and should never be used anywhere, for anything. The problem is that they don’t breath at all, so any hot item you put in them gets soggy almost immediately. Not good. This was a problem with the pizza I ordered too. I was happy with the slice’s cheese and the sauce was delicious, but the crust was soggy — again because they put it in a styrofoam container. Since Bruno’s claims to be a Brooklyn pizzeria, they should know that when you order a slice to go in Brooklyn, you get it on a paper plate inside a paper bag. This is crucial for letting the moisture out and avoiding every New York style pizza enthusiast’s worst nightmare: soggy crust. Bruno’s has a lot of potential. I love that they’re bringing decent Mexican food to Lyons and they should be commended for that move. Nice work! With a few tweaks, it could be one of the best places in the area.
