Despite the appearance of being a dinky little shack on the side of the road, Lynwood Carryout is actually one of the better places to eat in the area. They have a diverse menu, including hot dogs, cheeseburgers, wraps, and, most importantly, gyros. For people who have never had a gyro before in their life, this is a place I recommend highly. It is the perfect example of a gyro, with nicely spiced meat cooked just right, with great tzatziki sauce, a perfectly pillowy pita, and awesome overall flavor. To add to the appeal, the prices here are insanely cheap. Others have complained about the quality of service here, but I find both the owner and his employee to be very friendly and give great service. The food is made to order, so sometimes it takes a few minutes, but the overall quality of the food makes it definitely worth any minuscule wait. The hot dogs, burgers, and fries also definitely live up to the quality of their gyros, which are among the best in the area. The sole criticism would be that Lynwood Carryout doesn’t accept credit cards, which frankly is a bit ridiculous in the modern era. Still, the quality of the food is worth the trip to the ATM. Unfortunately, being a carryout place, there isn’t anywhere to sit aside from a couple of park benches outside, but if you’re looking to bring delicious gyros home with you, there’s no place better.

The owner here has the worst attitude ever… I wanted a cheese burger with mozzarella cheese… He yelled at me in front of all of the customers that I can’t alter my cheeseburger… He did this twice and like a dummy because its so close to my home I went back a couple of times to be treated rude and mean… Now I go to hometown gyro and pizza. love them. So maybe this small restaurant can afford to lose customers…

Dad and I just discovered the Lynwood Carry Out today. We were heading west from Merrilville on US30 and getting a bit hungry. Dad say’s he thinks there’s a little sandwich shop in a building that used to be a «Hoosier Pete’s» gas station(back in the 1940’s.) We checked it out and it is a jewel! Located about 6 or 8 miles west of I-65 on the North side of US30, they have gyros, Italian beef sandwiches, Vienna beef hot dogs, Polish sausage, and hamburgers. Dad got a Polish and I got a couple of Viennas and we shared an order of real French Fries. Wow! There is just no comparison between real food like this and the plastic fast food crap that’s scattered all up and down our interstate system.(Yes, I realize this also is not health food, but the quality difference is so great.) Maybe I never had a Vienna all-beef hot dog before, but they are GOOD. The steamed bun and your choice of all the standard Chicago fixins really makes it happen. I didn’t get to taste it but Dad seemed to be enjoying his Polish sausage, too. The REALPOTATO French fries were REALGOOD — hard smooth outside, and creamy on the inside. Perfect! As the name says, it is a carry out place. There are no seats, so you will probably want to plan on eating in your car. To me the place just had a wonderful atmosphere. Prices are super reasonable. Two dogs, a canned soda and fries was 3.99, I think. The staff were friendly and fun to interact with. I can’t wait to get back to the Lynwood Carry Out!
