An abundant and excellent selection of homemade candies. There are also many imported varieties of candy as well. I was drawn to the several varieties of homemade chocolate+coconut(my favorites). I’ve never seen so many types of licorice in my life! The clerk was very friendly and helpful with my order and even gave me two cute boxes as I was ordering one as a gift. The store used to be on Dundee but moved to Bardstown Road about 7 years ago. There is ample free parking in the rear unlike the metered parking at the old location.

I can’t review the candy here, but I did just have a very uncomfortable experience. Evidently one of the owners has a bit of a sore spot for cellar door chocolate shop. I asked if the bourbon balls at Dundee were made by Cellar Door(there was a confusing sign for this chocolate). The nice employee behind the counter began to explain when someone(an employee? The owner?) in the back jumped in with a bit of a chip on her shoulder. I have no idea why, but it seems that my question about the meaning of the sign stirred irritation. Evidently, cellar door stole their recipe for bourbon balls. After eluding to this, she scoffed and walked off. I felt uncomfortable and decided to leave. Rather than selling me on their chocolates, she left me feeling quite uncomfortable. It was weird.

Of all the teeth the tooth fairy collected from me, she forgot to take my sweet tooth! Good thing for Dundee Candy. I found myself wandering up Bardstown Rd recently(intended destination: Heine Brothers for a pastry) when I approached Dundee Candy Shop. I’d never been inside, despite passing it a thousand times, and decided that today was the day. I never made it to Heine Brothers, and found myself instead walking home in a blissful sugar coma, induced by Vanilla Caramels and some chocolate non-pareils. Inside the store you’ll find all varieties of chocolates, truffles, gummy candies, caramels, and dime store-type candies. Most things are organized in glass apothecary jars, making the shelves a feast for the eyes as you try and process all of the sugar around you and make a selection. I could hardly finish canvassing one shelf before I wanted to see what was on the neighboring shelf. In the end, I got some of my favorites in a tidy white bag. Never one to be patient when the sweet tooth is calling, I made it home with just a few candies to spare. Take my word for it and make a stop at Dundee Candy Shop the next time you’re in the area!

In Louisville, a food adventure in this city must include(in terms of candy) bourbon balls and modjeskas. I did appreciate that Dundee Candy shop was open longer than Muth’s Candy which was closer to downtown. It seems all the candy stores in the Louisville area close fairly early. If you’re driving along Bardstown Road, it could be easy to miss the place along the street. They do have a parking lot behind the store which can be accessed through a narrow alley. They carry a wide variety of flavors for their Boubon Balls. The only 2(out of the many) that I can remember off the top of my head are Peach Cobbler and Mint Julep. The person at the counter was patient with us and gave a few recommendations including the regular bourbon balls and the mint julep bourbon balls. The Modjeskas was the other type of confection unique to Kentucky. At first I was skeptical of it being any good, but after I purchased some and tried it at home, I was pleasantly surprised. The closest way to describe it is salt water taffy but way much more richer, creamy, and smooth with the marshmallow texture surrounded by a rich, smooth caramel. Take Note, carefully unwrap it and eat it from wrapper because it can be a sticky messy. As for the huge variety of truffles, they are visually beautiful and the chocolate was good but but the filling in the fruit flavored truffles was subtle at best. This is coming from someone who has grown up adoring the fruit flavored truffles from See’s Candies in SoCal. There are so many different choices of confections but if you come here, aim for the Boubon Balls and Modjeskas.
