YEE: Sheryl Crow and Gary Allan at the Greek Theatre

This was my first time at the Greek! And this was my first real concert!
Thank you to Katie B. for the free tickets! I brought my roommate as my date (and it was her first time too!). We had an awesome time!
The venue was gorgeous and it was a perfect warm night for a concert. I was surprised by the number of songs I recognized by Sheryl Crow. I loved it when she sang some of the oldies, like «All I Wanna Do.» Loved watching and hearing everyone dancing and singing along.
After this experience, I definitely want to come back to the Greek and go to more concerts in the future! :)

What a great concert at the Greek, one of my favorite venues in LA! Parking was a breeze, ticket pick up was super easy as they were already under our names. Sheryl performs many of her old hits as well as several songs from her new album. Her voice is still beautiful as it was 15 years ago, and the girl can play the guitar like a riot!

I’ve always been a big Sheryl Crow fan, and we thoroughly enjoyed her set. She’s always been country-​influenced, just like some of the greats of the 70s L.A. Music Scene — Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Warren Zevon, The Eagles and Linda Ronstadt. It’s hardly a stretch for her to move to Nashville and do an album there. Dylan did too (twice). And of course it makes sense that her record company would pair her up on tour with a mainstream Nashville artist, as a way to generate some cross-​over appeal for both.
But heck, guys, this is a girl who started out as a background singer for Michael Jackson. Her appeal is really cross-​over, and in a lot of ways very L.A. — whereas Gary Allan is a pure «714» white boy from the wrong side of the Orange Curtain, for whom «mainstream Nashville» seems to be a huge point of pride. «Boring» doesn’t even begin to describe his set — and all the light shows and pyrotechnics he brought along didn’t add any depth to some pretty banal, right-​out-​of-​the-​box country. By the end, my wife and I were playing Words With Friends, and wishing that Sheryl had asked Raul Malo or Ryan Bingham to open for her.
When he was done, some of the hats-​and-​boots crowd began to filter out — and when Sheryl did «Redemption Day,» her anti-​war song that Johnny Cash covered before he died, one of them heckled her; after that, I’d say 25% of the audience left. And truthfully, if I’d known better, we wouldn’t have showed up until 9 or so, when Sheryl came on. So yes, the mismatch shows, to put it mildly. But she opened with «Steve McQueen,» and she did «If It Makes You Happy» and «Soak Up the Sun,» and all those great songs of hers that sound so bubbly-​happy or kick-​butt on top, but have that layer of sly dark irony underneath, so it was, in fact, worth the wait.

I brought my darling older sister as my plus one and we had ourselves a hooting and hollering olé country fun. Mind you, we never heard of Gary Allan before and the only Sheryl Crow song we actually knew, together, was the ever-​so-​awesome «All I Wanna Do.» So what? You don’t need to be a die-​hard artist fan to enjoy their concert. In the right place, with the right company, you can have the best fun ever. And we did!
Some highlights:
* Gary Allan’s bass player, in a bright yellow kilt, was a dead ringer for Clive Owen. That’s a very good thing.
* Kettle corn and grande margaritas are a perfect pairing to the moon coming up above Griffith park. Southern California is heaven on earth.
* My 6’3″ frame had a hard time getting into Section C seating because my legs had to be thrown over the seat in front of me for me to fit. The staff at the Greek discreetly walked us down to an empty disabled section and brought me out an amazing cushioned leather folding chair. Say what? I originally asked them to just put us in the benches. They had a better idea. Wow.
* The bathrooms at the Greek were meticulously clean and plentiful. Seriously, the best venue for a concert ever.
This was seriously just about the most perfect Saturday night. A five star event for sure.

What an awesome show! I wasn’t too familiar with Gary Allan but he put on a great performance. Sheryl Crow was flawless, I loved the simplicity of just a performance to showcase her talent. The parking was crazy… stacked parking never again.

Admittedly, this is probably not a concert where you’d normally find me.
However once again, Unilocal has opened my eyes and allowed me to experience great things that I otherwise wouldn’t have!
Gary Allen and Sheryl Crow rocked the Greek Theater on this beautiful Saturday evening. I recognized several of Sheryl Crow’s older hits, and even though I wasn’t yet familiar with Gary Allen, I really enjoyed his performance as well!
