The Box Gallery is a great art venue. I’m not sure if they expanded recently since a previous review said it’s small– it’s actually really big– smaller than a museum but as big as any Chelsea gallery. Last night they opened an exhibition of the pioneering video/film/expanded cinema artist Stan Vanderbeek. They’re showing Vanderbeek’s Poemfield series(late 1960’s), a lesser known body of work than his early collage films which greatly influenced Terry Gilliam, but equally important as they are considered to be the first computer animations. He created them at Bell Labs with Ken Knowlton. Six of the Poemfields are projected large-scale throughout the main room which is huge with very high ceilings. Accompanying works on paper and even some of the early computer punch cards he used are on view in several smaller galleries. The press release was thoughtfully written and several catalogs of his work are laid out on a coffee table with two chairs so you can sit and peruse. I look forward to seeing the next show The Box puts on. There are several cool restaurants and bars within a one block radius. Parking in the area can be difficult to find. I took a Lyft last night so I didn’t have to deal with it.

I don’t know why the 1st review here says tis in Chinatown as this one is on the same row as Wurstkuche. Went there yday for the 12pm screening of RenzoMartens fantastic 1 ½ story of how poverty is a resource/commodity in the heartland of Congo with the tagline«Enjoy Poverty». There are 4 rooms all nice and spacious-looking forward to seeing more exhibitions here.

GREAT gallery — my only complaint is that I wish they did more events! I went to some of the outdoor LAFMS shows and it was sweet. Lots of space and potential!

Great, small art gallery. If you have interest in perversion or the grotesque doesn’t bother you, you might enjoy your time here. I would not recommend this gallery to young children. I loved the feeling upon entering. It felt very urban and very artsy. As if I was in NYC at an art gallery there. The art is thought-provoking and risqué, and just the purpose of art, the pieces here will cause you stop, react, and try to interpret each piece. Each piece here was quite interesting. Tip: If you’re goofy, there’s great photo ops here. Bring your camera! It’s free!

The Box is at the northernmost point of the hidden Chunk King road. It is definitely one of the best galleries in the Chinatown Arts District(CAD). Currently they are preparing for an installation which promises to be really cool. There were two guys setting up the installation and they let us in. They were not art snobs and that’s a plus! The installation is comprised of interactive works of art. There are handles which you turn that makes the works of art come alive. This particular installation was pretty humorous in a provocative way in my opinion. The Box usually has very provocative art. Perhaps it is the gallery with the most controversial art in the whole CAD! The box has a pretty storefront. Parking nearby is $ 5 and up but if you are willing to walk a couple of blocks you can park for free in a little residential area to the north by Phở 87.
