The day of tacos ruling the streets are over… welcome to the dawn of the Quesadilla! The quesadillas here are made with handmade tortillas, the best monterey jack/mozzerella cheese blend I’ve ever tasted and the add on selections are all home made salsas. Tacos — shmacos. Burrito — shmu … you get the idea. The quesadilla: You get about 8 – 10 inches of handmade tortilla with(as said above) a great cheese blend. But that is just where it starts. They have all sorts of meats to choose from to start to fill this sucker with. Also have some non-meat selections to fill with. Meats: Asada, cecina(a different cut of beef served whole, not cut up like asada), pollo en tinga(which has become an obsession for me — chicken in chipotle), papas con chorizo, chicharron and some other more adventurous meats I don’t eat. The toppings: They have a habanero chile, salsa de nopales(which I always pile on), green hot sauce with tomatillo and serrano chiles, red hot sauce with jalapenos and tomatos, avocado hot sauce(this one is thick, with pureed avocados, some cream, lots of jalapenos and serranos and cilantro). Also have some pico de gallo if you’re not into heat. The hit: You get the 1⁄3 lb of quesadilla/meat/toppings for 3 bucks! Seriously! Yes there are some seedy characters sometimes but its mostly tired produce market workers, not bums. There are also bootleg dvds and cds just 10 steps away and once in a while you can score a hand made leather belt for 10 bucks when they guy comes by on a bike! There are usually 2 – 3 different stands making similar mexican fare but after tasting them all, this one is the best for the salsas. The lady«Martita» is very nice and will pile on the add ons for you if you don’t know what to do with it all.
