This one’s too big. This one’s too small. Superchief’s…just right! The ground-level garage space is raw, unassuming and perfect for showing off large scale photography, painting and drawings. There’s lots of elbow room for checking out the work, and wandering between pieces. This is a huge departure from other LA gallery spaces, where there’s barely room to breathe — little lone see the art work. The DJ booth, bar and free-standing store all blend into the background — really letting the art shine. On Saturday night I checked out Ash Thayer’s photo show, «Kill City». The work documented her life in the early ‘90s in the Lower East Side Squatter community. It was a trip seeing photos of people I know rebuilding tenements! Her monumental work really captured just how tough it was to secure and build a home… from scratch. I’d picked up the companion book for«Kill City» a few months back. It was great to finally meet the artist, see the massive prints and get the book signed. See it for yourself, the show runs through the 27th! I’ll definitely be back to check out other shows at Superchief! I love the space!
